Why Do KFC & Red Rooster Include Tiny Chicken Pieces in Bulk Boxes?

Ever ordered a big box of chicken from KFC or Red Rooster only to find some disappointingly tiny pieces mixed in?

Why do they even sell these small cuts instead of just using bigger ones? It likely comes down to maximizing product use. Chickens aren’t all drumsticks and thighs, so companies distribute different cuts to avoid waste. But does that justify charging customers for bits that feel like scraps? It also leads to arguments within families and even disputes between customers and staff. Should fast food chains stick to larger pieces only, or is the current mix fair enough?

This is in response to my disgust in seeing this post on reddit.

I even remember a past Christmas party at my former office where the same issue caused a problem. One person ended up with only small pieces, and HR had to go out of their way to get them a separate meal.

If they are giving us small pieces, they should compensate with 2 small pieces.

Yep experienced this since maybe 10 years ago with kfc. When we buy 6 pieces original, we get 5 normal size and 1 small. Sometimes 3 and 2. The menu should disclose this or they should get sued one day

Sued for what? You ordered 6 pieces, you got 6 pieces.

Crazy disproportionate anger response to stinginess of fast food outlet

      For both situations:
Customer behaviour: In a fight or flight situation, choose running away safely as I have bad knees.

Food stinginess: Well I don't abuse workers. I probably stop going for month at that store and have a grudge temporarily.

Saw that post. Takes a real cowardly piece of shit to come in and assault some teenage girls over a bit of chicken. Shame on the wife also, for enabling that behaviour.

That's an extreme reaction. Were you really annoyed at the fast food staffer or something/someone else already?

You'll find that the smaller pieces have a higher ration of coating to chicken meat, therefore better returns. Its easier to "dump" the smaller pieces in bigger boxes or buckets and they hope that people lose count.

    To increase their profit margins.

    Next forum post.

  • Maybe they should have a premium upgrade option that guarantee all large pc if it causes so much drama.

    Can’t argue there.

Why Do KFC & Red Rooster Include Tiny Chicken Pieces in Bulk Boxes?

    Because as you said yourself,

Chickens aren’t all drumsticks and thighs, so companies distribute different cuts to avoid waste.

So not sure what the question is. Different cuts, come in different sizes.

Just buy 1/4 Chicken at Red Rooster. Exactly as it says and it's real chicken.

I don't normally eat that shqt but was asked to bring a big box of pieces to a family gathering so picked some up at a drive through. I reckon 1/3 of them were wings that were about 5cm long. Not only that but it was so oily that it soaked the bottom of the box and the paper bag and leaked onto the floor of my car.

I'm pretty sure the chicken is the least of the problems in that office.

Were the staff 10 years old or something?

  • The worse is when you get a two piece and you get a wing included or a value lunch with a wing.
Even worse is fried Korean places that cut a piece in two and call it two pieces.

  • We boughtr one of their 25 pieces buckets a while back. They should call it a bin.
Disgustung mixture of who knows what, insted of a opportunity to try out the garbage addon products with whoppee names
I just going back to my 6 months space between orders, where I immediately say to myself "why did I buy that crap?"

  • You can solve that problem by not eating KFC or Red Rooster, your body will thank you for it as well. For context, I got KFC probably once a week last year, sometimes 2 or 3 times a week. Since the deals got worse and the prices went up I gave up on it, haven't touched it in 3 months and I don't even think about it anymore.

    Former Area Manager with KFC
    The raw chooks are cut into 9 pieces, being 2 x wings; 2 x legs; 2x ribs; 2 x thighs; 1x breast
Staff are supposed to pack certain combinations for each pack size, ie 9 pice box should be 1 whole chicken; bucket should be 2 whole chickens. BUT customers do dictate on what pieces they prefer and this leads to abundance of 'not liked' pieces.
Staff (kids / juniors) do find it hard to say NO to a ranting customer and so oblige their unreasonable request.

  • Its fast food…. you expect too much

I'd be happier if they got the number of pieces or nuggets correct…. just once.

  • Are you referring to when they cut the breast in half and call it 2 pieces, or are you referring to them calling wings a piece of chicken?

I once ordered a KFC 5 piece meal that was described as a 'meal for 2', it had 3 wings, one drum and one lower 1/3 of a breast piece.

But whne you get a 10 piece or a bucket, you have to accept a wing or 2 since butchering a chicken results in 8 pieces (or 10 when they cut the breast in half.
