New Cashback Comparison Website - reward.ist

Hello OzBargain peeps.

There's a new (Australia based) web app called Rewardist to help find the best cashback offers for a given store.

Full disclosure, I built it

Anthony here 👋 I'm a Melbourne-based, casual developer and I like to build useful (and sometimes useless) things in my spare time.

My latest project Rewardist, aggregates cashback offers from the major cashback & frequent flyer shopping portals into one place, making it easy to see all cashback offers for a given store and avoid the need to search on each platform separately (one of those ideas born from a personal need).

It's currently in beta, so I'm keen for any & all feedback you might have:

  • Is it something you would find it useful?
  • Are there any cashback or frequent flyer sites missing that you use regularly?
  • Any difficulty using the interface or finding a store?

The tool is completely free to use. I do have some optional sign-up referral links listed on the site, these are clearly labelled as such and can be hidden. However, if you are new to any of the cashback sites, please consider using my sign-up referral, any little bit I make will help to maintain the app & keep me caffein-fuelled for those late nights I get stuck on a coding problem that I just can't leave be.

Thanks in advance.

I like to build useful (and sometimes useless) things in my spare time.

What other useless things have you built?

What would be useful is if it showed the actual discount you get, not just the "up to".

eg. "Up to" 10% off at Amazon usually means 0%.

    • A good point. I did consider this, but with some of the stores (Amazon is a good example), the conditions/categories can be quite extensive and not particularly feasible to display in a concise way in the UI.

Something to consider further though (perhaps a more comprehensive breakdown on the store's dedicated page).

      Thanks.

the conditions/categories can be quite extensive

that is exactly why it would be so useful

      • +1

You could cherry pick popular categories that people wait for, i.e electronics, Footwear etc.

        • Nice idea, thanks!

😆 oh many, but very few of my projects make it to production.

Can you build something that aggregates all of JV's comments into one place?

        • +1

Maybe a word cloud of JV's comments, overlayed with only the bolded words?

          • +1

            @dust: Jacinta
            Dan
I heard it on the radio

Everything else was too small to be visible.

      • +5

That would be an example of a useless thing to build

We need a JV Bot. Give the real JV a break now and then. Could call it ChatJVB?

May I suggest instead of (or in addition to) showing points per dollar spent, also show the value of those points.
I'd like to be able to see the value difference for example, comparing 2 points per $ Velocity points with 0.5 points per $ Emirates miles requires me to do maths in my head and I don't want to do maths in my head while searching for the best deals.

    Also, why no Kmart?

Lastly, how are you collecting my name and other details as there doesn't appear to be any login or signup functionality?

also show the value of those points.

I did go down that rabbit hole, but the value of a frequent flyer point is pretty subjective. For the purposes of ranking cashback & frequent flyer points together, I've gone with a 1c value for all, this is a rate that I'd personally be happy to pay outright for most airline's points (though all are not equal, for sure).

      Also, why no Kmart?

The idea of this tool is to aggregate the various shopping portals (i.e. click through to make a tracked purchase) and Kmart (to my knowledge) isn't on these sites. However, your point is still valid, there are points to be had via a Flybuys membership, so they could potentially appear in the results all the same (for a true/comprehensive comparison, even if there's no click-through to a cashback site).

how are you collecting my name and other details

Correct, at the moment there is no login functionality, but I do have plans on implementing some customisable email notifications and such which will require some level of PII (albeit optional).

This is all excellent feedback by the way, thank you 🙏

  • Aliexpress is showing 22% cashback from cash rewards….it's 4.5% on their site

    • It's 4.5% now, so must have been a delayed update (temporarily boosted offers can cause this for a short period until the next update). I might need to increase the frequency, thanks for flagging Nalar.

      • was helpful site right up until Ali, was maybe my 5th search and it was wrong but other seems good so far, keep it up!

  • Good idea.

    Looks good.

One change, make the icon of the cashback icons coloured. Its too difficult to see between TC, SB, CR & SB

  • Yes looks good - but is it just me, or does the website run very sluggishly on a computer? Works fine on the phone.

    • is it just me, or does the website run very sluggishly on a computer? Works fine on the phone.

      Pretty fast on my PC.
I'm on 250/25 connection for your comparison.

  • This is a great idea - look forward to seeing it develop. Bookmarked!

  • This is great, well done! I think main thing for me is how often is the data refreshed? Every minute, hour, daily? If it's all the time you should position your value prop around it. That way it'll always have the best deal regardless of any new short-lived "deals" that shop back/CR run.

I'm also happy to help if you want any further advice/support.

  • It looks good so far and that's from me using it for like 2 minutes. Like seeing all of that info in 1 place.

    Keep up the great work!

    • SB has Plus member rate.

      TCB has highest cashback guarantee.
