Which are better Nreal Air or these? I own the Nreal and they’re really good plugged into PS5, switch and iPad Pro.

I was able to get my prescription lenses (astigmatism) made in china to fit the Nreal too, I wonder if you can with this model?

  • You mean Xreal?

    • They used be branded as Nreal. Wasn’t sure who your replying too as well? There is a reply button

  • Keen to give them a shot for this price, but a few questions (without having to resort to terrible influencer "reviews".

What is the resolution? and FOV?

Do they have bluetooth so you can get earbuds to work with them?

    What is realistic battery life?

Do they need the accessory boxes or can they just plug into a campatible device (phone/steamdeck (OTG)/Macbook/Laptop/etc via USB C) and just work?

And do they 'move' around in VR a little bit like the XReal are supposed to, so that the image is not 100% locked to your head, but rather you have to 'look' at the right place? ie. Do they have motion tracking?

I'm guessing the answer is no to the "VR" motion sensing which is why these are relatively cheap, and therefore not nearly as good as the XReals.

    Still for sh!ts n giggles I'm tempted!

    • It worries me that none of those questions have been answered on their page or in their "Specs" section.

    • +3

OK I'll answer some of my questions.

Resolution appears to be 1080p /16:9 - This seems to be the defining factor. That's not great looking at a 100 inch telly, 3m away from you (their statement on 'scale'). They are hiding this in their marketing. In fact there is no clear 'specs' on their website anywhere. I do not like that.
Refresh rate is 60 or 120Hz.
      76g (very light!)
      FOV is 47deg?? Horiz/Diag?
      Battery is 10000mA.
650Nits brightness but not blacked out so will get washed out a lot. There is no blackout option, not even a clip you can put on the front. I suspect a 3D print could fix this, or accessories will be available by third party's later?
There is *no motion sensing/VR 'like' capabilities. ie. If it had the capability for the 'screen' to stay 'fixed' in real space, when you turn your head - this is often cited as the biggest game changer for augmented reality glasses, and where true generational capability is found.
There is zero processing on-board - so you are slaved to a device. Fair enough, no surprise there. They sell accessories to do this if needed.

Do you need to pay for an app for this to work on Apple ecosystem?
      Do they do HDR?

They are relying on BS such as 3840Hz plus PWM to make it seem like they are really good screens. I would suggest this is negligible marketing waffle to hide the actual refresh rate and resolution.

      Nonetheless, the price is good!

      • 3DOF screen capability should be linked to the PocketTV or slave device the glasses its plugged into. PocketTV does not have that. Beam Pro device does.

      • Battery is only for the dock if you buy it. Glasses have no battery inside by the looks.

        • Ah that makes sense.

1080p is actually fine on these glasses. I have the Viture pro XR and I don't notice the 1080p to be a problem at all. I actually prefer the lower resolution, makes using it with my Ally X easy since Ally can't run games well at higher res anyway.

I don't think these things draw that much battery either, my Ally reports same system battery drain with the built in display or the vitures so about 4-6w draw depending on brightness.

      • to be fair, "3840Hz plus PWM" is a critical spec for some users, even if it's irrelevant to definition/refresh rate.

FOV is the real killer imo.

Whoever designed their "Read more" section needs to find a new job. Read more, read more, read more, read more, read more, read less (and then you have to click read more another 6 times.

    • Unfortunately the website is scummy as, along with basically every other AR glasses supplier. Sadly that is the marketing machine hard at work.

  • I have the Air 2S and they are awesome. Biggest issue was the blurred corners which apparently are fixed with this version.

    • What use case do you use them for?

And can you pair airbuds with them via bluetooth?

      • From what I gather they are just dumb screens. You'll pair your air buds to whatever you're connecting them to.

        • Ah that is a fair point. Derp.

I use them for watching content and playing on my Steam deck. I do a lot of travelling and they are a game changer for flights. They don't have Bluetooth or battery. They are powered by USB C into whatever they are plugged into

        • Excellent. Thanks for answering.
They sound absolutely perfect for that.

An aside - they demonstrate how extremely good value the Meta-subsidised headsets really are, as they are absolutely packed with tech. Whilst these things are just a couple of screens with some glasses tacked on and a bit of wiring and some control boards.

        • Do your eyes get tired after prolonged use?

        • Hey mate i just grabbed a set of these. I need glasses for close up stuff as well as things further away. Do you happen to know what the focus distance of these things are? I'm guessing it's probably a couple metres like most things like this and vr headsets.

  • -2

I don't get the point. There's always a better option available (your devices screen.. because the glasses are only a dumb screen anyway?)

    • Large immersive screen, without the real estate. ie sitting on an airplane playing games on a 'huge' screen, whilst being able to take in your surroundings.
Also, not looking like a complete bellend as if you were wearing a MetaQuest headset.
Only looking like a partial bellend.

        Except it's not.

Reviewers have said it's roughly equivalent to a 27" screen at arm's length…

        And you can't resize it

        • For me that would still be preferably over a Switch/Steamdeck as my neck turns into Quasimodo using handhelds these days.
27" is still good if all you have to carry is a large glasses case as opposed to that actual screen.
Quality may even be better than the cheapo Aliexpress screens at roughly 15".

        • +2

          They're probably being generous.

Mathematically, 201" at 6m scales down to exactly 20.1" at 60cm, which is a somewhat typical distance from eyes to regular desktop monitors. Still better than airplane screens, but I don't travel that much so not like $350 better.

Still waiting for the generation with a step up in FOV.

Each individual perceives size differently; what truly matters is the field of view (FoV) and the perceived focal distance. A 27” screen at arm’s length (~60 cm) has a FoV of 53 degrees, which is the same as watching a 201” screen from 4.5 meters away. The key difference between these two scenarios is where your eyes are focusing and that has an impact on the perceived size.

I’m not sure what the perceived focal distance of these Ray Neo glasses is, but I own a pair of Viture Pro XR glasses with a 3-meter focal distance (not to be confused with the focal length of the optics). Which means my eyes are focusing on an image as if it appears 3 meters away, which is achieved through the birdbath optics used in the glasses.

I know the perceived viewing distance of my Viture is definitely more than a couple of meters because I’m farsighted and wear glasses to view computer screens. Our 85” TV, viewed from about 3 meters away, is at the edge of what I can see clearly without glasses. But with the Viture glasses, the image is sharp for me even without prescription lenses, which means for my eyes, the image appears as 3 meters or further away.

Also, when I sit about 3 meters away from our TV and put on the glasses, the projected image almost perfectly overlays the actual TV. So, to me, it feels just like watching an 85” screen from 3 meters away. Technically, this is comparable in angular size to a 27” screen viewed from 80 cm according to this online calculator. However, I can’t focus on a 27” screen from 80 cm, so it doesn’t feel the same to me. For someone with good vision, though, that comparison might make some sense.

But by that logic, they should also be able to compare the projected screen to a 10” tablet held just 22 cm from their face. That’s why screen size comparisons like that don’t make sense, you need to compare the size at the actual perceived focal distance.

In any case the Viture glasses I own are absolutely amazing to use on planes, or even in bed or relaxing on a couch. Its as if I always have access to my 85" TV anywhere I want for media consumption.

          • @opt: Ahhhh that's the other brand I've been looking at - Virture.

Costs about double but seems more in line with what I'd actually like.

            Good to know.

It's pretty hard to get around the reality of price points without losing quality or fidelity somewhere, the marketing mumbo jumbo is a pretty big red flag

            • +1

@Telios: Yes, they are a bit pricey, but for me, well worth what I paid because they are absolutely amazing for watching videos while traveling, or even at home (without disturbing others). The 1080p resolution and lack of good 3DoF mean they aren't very good as screens for work, but you can still use them for casual browsing and it's much better than using a tiny phone screen or even a 10” tablet. After I bought the glasses I stopped taking my tablet when traveling.

    • On the train, when transperth refuses to put shades or even the most basic tint on the east/west windows(even on the new model C rolling stock), on a line that heads north south… you'll want these.

  • I tried to purchase using PayPal but I'm stuck on the authorization screen. Anyone else have this issue?

  • make sure your device supports DisplayPort (some phones might not support it) even if you have usb-c

Use code RayNeo5% for 5% off

  • I bought this only to watch those spatial videos I took using iPhone (yes it has a 3D mode), can't afford an expensive Vision Pro…

drop me a pm for 10% OFF code!

    • Have you got shipping notification for the glasses yet? I tried to contact customer support when this deal was first posted to ask a couple questions but haven't got a reply at all. This makes me worry if i buy a pair and have issues.

The sales team just replied saying my order will be full filled by this week

        • They just cancelled my order for whatever reason, the hobos. Guess they lost this this sale.

          • @Vardogsormr: Did you buy a bundle or just the glasses. I had a bundle with the joydock

            • @Economic: Was a pocketTV bundle. Just said accessories were out of stock and cancelled. Not very upfront as we found out they never intended to sell outside US.

  • Yeah awesome that's good. I actually made an order this arvo too. Pretty sure your referral worked too. I just got the glasses and no accessories for now. Want to use them with my iPad for now.

My order was just cancelled and refunded. I made a profit on exchange

    • Ha not bad!

  • Lol it's gone

    A real non sponsored review

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2uYXnxp1UQ

  • Oh well that didn't last. Orders can't be made to us now. That's cool. I'll sit out this gen for the next model with 3DOF for less than $500

    • apparently even US has been cancelled due to tariff uncertainty
