Looking for a Plan That Allows Timed International Calls on Telstra Network

I'm on the JB Hi-Fi Mobile Upfront Plan Starter for $52/mth. Data is great at 60GB and Telstra coverage and 5G is great. There are no international calls on this plan though and once in a blue moon I need to call an international number. I'm happy to pay for the call at a timed rate, but my plan doesn't offer it, all they can do is a $10 add-on to give me unlimited international, I'll never use $10 a month worth of calls though.

I get an allowance from my employer of $80/mth to put towards phone costs, I bank the difference. I could, however, put the full $80 to a new plan that gives me a new phone as well (the Pixel 9 Pro would be nice).

Any recommendations for plans that give me Telstra coverage and speeds, a decent amount of data, and timed international calls or at least a credit I can add to use over the course of a year? Happy to commit to a contract and I'm open to the idea of a new Pixel 9 Pro phone, my Pixel 8 Pro is doing fine at the moment though.

  • Can't you turn the $10 on and off as you need it?

    • Yes, but when I need to make an international call, it's usually because there is something urgent I need to attend to. I don't want to faff around with subcriptions at that point.

Crazy they allow you to bank the difference, thought most places you need to provide receipts?

Is the international number for specific country? Or could be anywhere? Can maybe look into getting international calling card when you need to make the call? But honestly $10 per charge when you need to call somewhere internationally is not bad especially if just once in a blue moon.

    • Yep, well they do it and don't need receipts, its just a perk you get paid.

Specific country would be NZ, but on super rare occasions it could be any country. For arguments sake lets just say NZ only.

  • What countries are you calling? Boost's prepaid plans include unlimited international calls to some selected countries. For example their $49 prepaid SIM:

Unlimited standard calls to 20 selected destinations: Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, USA, Vietnam.

300 mins to standard numbers to 30 selected destinations: Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Mexico, Nepal, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, UAE

    • Woah! Full Telstra network including 5G, unlimited local and NZ calls (which is what I need), 35gig per month plus data bank what I don't use, for $3 less than what I pay now. Sounds awesome! Are there any catches you can think of with it?

      • Data banking is only available for the following month. You can't bank your data indefinitely which is a bit of a jib. My partner has banked 1.2TB of data with Aldi from years of data banking :)

  • Woolworths mobile $25 per month? Telstra wholesale not full Telstra

    • JB HiFi is full Telstra yeah? I want to keep full 5G speed and coverage.

      • Only other one that is full Telstra (and might not be full speed) is Boost. Sorry you might be out of luck

  • Have you thought of getting a VOIP number and use an app for calls?
Crazytel rates to NZ landlines is like 2c/min and mobiles for 7.4c/min. They have a free plan so only pay for what you use.
