Mesh System Recommendation - Wi-Fi 7, Tri Band

Hi OzB team,
I'm after some advice as I am about to upgrade my internet service and require a new modem. I like the idea of a mesh system given the size of my home and where I require the best connection.

I'm certainly not completely up to date with the best options and the reviews online can be mixed at time, so I was hoping for some advice from those that know a lot more than I do.

What I've narrowed down to:
Wi-Fi 7 - I would love to future proof it
Tri Band - same as above
2x(min) 3x(ideal) 2.5 Gbps ports
1x 10 Gbps port - ideally on both router and receiver but that can limit the options and increase the price (optional 10 Gbps port but it would be nice)
Wired backhaul mesh. I have ethernet available where the mesh units will sit.
2x Units should be sufficient - 340 sq meters home
Budget (magic number) - Aiming for sub $800.

I have been looking around and have found the above perimeters, an example would be the Netgear Orbi Wireless BE11000 @ $789. There's some other options at a lower price point, but most of the reviews weren't favourable or very mixed.

I'm open to options of pairing multiple routers rather than a traditional mesh system - what ever is going to be the best performance for my budget or less.

Thanks in advance.

    TP-Link Deco BE65 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Router 2-pack is under $800. (4) 2.5GbE ports. No 10GbE port.

It costs a total of $1200 or more for a router with (1+) 10GbE port and (3+) 2.5GbE ports and two tri-band Wi-Fi 7 access points.

    • Would you recommend the BE65 over the Netgear Orbi? I've read mixed opinions on TP-Links security but then I've read Netgear has been effected as well.

That's fair, I'm not sure of EOFY may change that but probably looking at one of the above in my price point.

BE65 are pretty good, not perfect but good for the price. I've got a two-pack last year for about $520 ish? Haven't skipped a beat since I've got it.

If you can hold off, wait till they go on sale. They've gone pretty low in the past.

I don't have Orbi but a mate has the WiFi 6 version and they haven't had any issues with it.

My only advice is to wire backhaul as opposed to wireless, although with these tri-band devices, I've heard wireless backhaul is pretty good now but I haven't tried it.

Don't think you would go wrong with either.

        • Thanks buckethat, I agree and will definitely be utilising wired backhaul. I had additional ports installed in our recent build for this reason.
Sounds like both are good options but the BE65 is definitely a little cheaper. If they were the same price I'd go with Netgear but at this stage leaning towards TP-Link, will just wait until they go on sale.

Get the Deco if you can wait for a deal. TP-Link Deco BE65 2-pack was $445 and $539. NetGear Orbi RBE772 has dropped to $789 (was $842).

Most of the Deco settings can only be changed on the Deco app. Netgear Orbi has a browser login with all the settings and Orbi app.

          Thanks!

I've seen your other posts so I understand you are quite knowledgeable about this. I'm changing over to a faster internet tomorrow, which my current router won't be able to handle, would I be right in saying that the internet will still work as it's FTTP and I have the NBN Modem, and it just means I won't get the full speed since the router can't send and receive that much?

@Mat12345: That is right. What is your current router?

What speed tier are you changing to? 1000/50?

@Twix: Thanks. It's an older TP-Link router, I would have to check the model. It's currently capable of 250 down, even seen it peak higher, so it'll be interesting to see it's cap.

I'm going to 1000/50 for $5 pm less so I'd even potentially wait a few months for a sale on a router like you mentioned earlier.

I have a dual MR47BE setup with EasyMesh backhaul, which costs around $180 per unit with the Amazon Promo. No 10 GbE ports though

    • Thanks for the tip. I'm trying to work out what is better, this idea or the traditional mesh system, but it seems like with EasyMesh or OneMesh it will work in a similar manner.

If you get the uplink BE65 make sure its the v2. I got mine from binglee as they state its the v2. So far so good, I got the 3 pack but found out 2 was sufficient

    • Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for that. I believe 2 will be enough for me as well.

  • If you manage to get all of that for $800.00 or less some corners were cut and it's not going to be a great solution I imagine?

    • Other than the 10 Gbps Port which was very wishful thinking I know, I've seen at least 2 traditional mesh options and other options of joining 2 traditional routers together through OneMesh or EasyMesh, so I think it's definitely possible.

I still put the 10 Gbps Port in the post just in case there was an option I wasn't aware of, that encompassed this.

  • Tp link be 65 2-pack for sale at centre com for $551. Not a bad price

  • Following along as I am looking to replace my Deco M5 mesh set up.

Is the anti-TP-Link rhetoric on OzB - citing security issues, firmware challenges etc. - something to take heed of as someone who doesn't do too much more than video streaming and a little bit of Xbox Cloud Gaming?
