How's The Australia Car Market Looking? (Delivery Date Delays)

Hi, when I left Australia a year ago, a lot of new cars took 4-6 months to get delivered.

Has this delay been sorted?

I'm moving back end of August (4.5 months) and need to get a car sorted. Wondering if I should order one now or wait until I am in Australia.

BYD are offering a $1k fully refundable deposit when ordering, so am considering ordering now.

  • Your post sounds like your already on top of the situation , is there anything to add ⁉️

Have you spoken to a dealer and asked? It varies from car marker to car marker and then model to model.

    • Emailed a couple but none message back. Hard to call because of the time difference. Will have to stay up and call in a month or two.

Depends on manufacturer and model. A lot have created an artificial delay in place in order to limit supply and therefore keep prices high and limit or eliminate negotiations. Smaller brands that want to build market share have taken basically the opposite approach in order to capitalise on the supply gap and those not willing to wait.

I was speaking with our fleet manager at work yesterday, and she said that if I wanted a Model 3, could order today and get it by the end of the week

    • Tesla cars aplenty, they will be happy if you took it sooner as the insurance costs of holding it has risen significantly due to risks.

      • They want to offload them before it 'spontaneously' combusts

I went into Mazda for a CX-5 in mid August last year and picked it up the following week.

  • We ordered our Sealion 7 4 weeks ago and don’t think we’ll get it before the EV rebate ends in May. They can’t tell us when it will be allocated/arrive

So your deal is yet to be sealed (assuming you're not lion)?

What BYD are you looking at buying, because some you can pick up in a week, some a month. I would wait until maybe EOFY and see if there are any sales on old stockers and just tell them that you will buy now, but pick up wont be until August. I dont think you are going to have to wait for 4~6 months for a BYD. They have holding yard full of these bangers.

    • Looking at their Ute, the shark.

Good idea waiting for the EOFY. Hopefully they can delay delivery until September at the EOFY price.

Yeah, I would call up and see what the lead time is on a Shark. They are very popular and last check (I want one as my new work truck) they said "up to 3 months" but "could be earlier" and on an almost brand new model with a wait list… you are going to be pushing shit up hill trying to get a discount on one even at EOFYS time.

If you buy a decent used car private sale, which is much better way than buying a brand new, then delivery is instant!

Not necessarily. In Victoria if the seller hasn't previously arranged the roadworthy certificate then you can be delayed by up to a few weeks.

      • yeah more like a week to sort everything out.

      • I thought 'decent' was the excluding term of any non RWC car, but you are right I should have made it clearer.
