    128gb = no deal.

This deal should be for 256gb version.

Even better, refuse to buy phones that you can't plug a micro-SD card into.

Phone makers put ridiculous markup on the internal storage memory of a phone, it's usually multiple times the cost of purchasing the same amount of memory as a micro-SD card.

And, when you change to a new phone in a few years, you can just move the micro-SD card to your new phone. No need to re-purchase the phone's internal storage every time you change phones.

Be good if the EU would enforce this like they did USB c.

You're assume that most people want or need to have lots of storage space on their phone. I'm not sure that's an entirely reasonable assumption. It's not something I've ever needed, despite always buying the lowest capacity phone available.

Also, internal storage fitted in phones these days is usually considerably faster (and more expensive) than microSD card storage so a direct comparison isn't fair….although there's no denying that higher storage models are priced at a premium.

Simply put 128gb is simply not enough in 2025.

A 128gb will have ~100gb out of the box. After installing all the apps and updates you are left with 80gb or less.

A few videos will take up 10 GBs easy. Add a couple more videos and photos and your phone will be full within 6 months.

For you. I don't have this problem.

I am the target market for the smallest storage (and cheapest) model.

          • @mg_k: agree im on pixel 6a 128gb - and having to keep offloading photos and video as I run out of storage.

            Checking mine-
-Apps taking 60gb - highest tiktok 3.5gb, speech recognition and synthesis from google 2.4gb, yt 2gb, android system intelligence 2gb, google 1.6gb, google play services 1.4gb, spotify 1gb, a few other apps taking 1gb each

            System
            -OS 10gb
            -Temp files 17gb (cannot delete)

left with not much to play with for videos and photos! need 256gb at least

        • You're assume that most people want or need to have lots of storage space on their phone.

I'm not assuming that at all. A micro-SD slot gives you the best of all worlds: if you don't want extra storage, leave the slot empty. But if you do want extra storage, the option is there, and it's really easy to buy however much storage you want, up to a terabyte.

And if your first micro-SD card turns out not to have enough capacity for your usage, you can upgrade to a larger-capacity micro-SD card, and install it yourself! Can't do that on a phone that doesn't have a micro-SD slot.

internal storage fitted in phones these days is usually considerably faster (and more expensive) than microSD card storage

Most reputable brands of micro-SD exceed 30 Megabytes per second as the write speed, and you can easily buy cards that do 90 Megabytes per second. What are you doing that requires faster storage than that? To put 90MBps into perspective, that's 720 Megabits per second, so you'd need Gigabit NBN to exceed that speed, and only by a little.

            @Russ:

I'm not assuming that at all

But why would I avoid buying phones without microSD card slots, if I'm never going to use it?

I'm happy to have it as an option if it's there, but it's super long way down my list of criteria. Longer battery life, or a better camera, are far more important to me than having external storage options.

            • @klaw81: I used to be a big user of micro SD cards when phones came with 16/32/64GB storage. But since they jumped to 128/256GB minimum with good deals on 512GB sometimes, I find I'm pretty satisfied now.

I still think a MicroSD slot is a nice and useful option to have, but it has gone down on my list of important features as I use Google Photos auto cloud backup and Immich for local full-quality backup.

I personally wouldn't buy a 128GB phone for myself (256GB minimum, 512GB would be nice), but I have plenty of friends and family who would absolutely be totally fine with 128GB.

Sometimes it's hard to see outside your own tech bubble. I certainly wouldn't expect my mom to know or care about microSD cards and making sure the camera app is using external storage and remembering to unmount it or switch the phone off before popping the card out or risk corrupting the whole card.

      • But what phone would we buy?

        • If I was buying today, I'd look at the Moto G54, or one of the cheaper models.

I'm typing this on a Moto G14, which I bought about 18 months ago, and it suits me fine. Has two physical nano-SIM slots and a micro-SD slot, and the specs say it supports micro-SD cards up to 1TB in size: https://en-in.support.motorola.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1…

Moto G54 is more expensive, but it's available now and supports ESIM, which is useful on overseas holidays.

  • can i trade in my base model pixel 7? or should i?

    • I would rather go for a pixel 9 pro

        • Paid article, can't see past first line.

            • +5

@darkly: The format of that "article" is super annoying. Written in a vastly different style with less sarcasm and fewer attempts at humour, it seems to be informative almost entirely by accident.

In the end, all it does is highlight the fact that premium and mid-range phones are a well-understood marketing phenomenon in use by all the major manufacturers.

And it ignores the fact that the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro are already widely available at a discount on their original RRP and further bargains can be found on this website quite regularly.

A less sensationalist title might have been: Pixel 9A is a good deal - just like the 3 generations before it.

I can't imagine who still reads the AFR; it's an absolute joke of a publication these days.

  • JB hifi offer $150 bonus credit for trade in. It was $250-$350 for the previous models.

  • I'm tempted. Has anyone traded in before? Curious what they would do on a deep scratch.

  • its kind weird the trade in value for pixel 7 is less than 7a

Why the hell would I do that?
