Car / 4WD Suspension

I'll start with a TLDR……Are Pedders really good for suspension work or can I get same/better with less dollars somewhere else?

Background:
1999 GU1 Y61 Patrol, standard off the shelf ST-Limited (bit more chrome and leather seats…that's probably about it over standard ST).
Anyway, got run into whilst parked outside my home (at-fault reckoned they fell asleep); sustained a bit of rear-end damage, my insurance wouldn't cover cost to repair as repairs were almost as much as car was insured for (drive less/pay less policy which in the end values your car less than replacment value).
The upside is (and I can't believe there is an upside when Insurance Companies are involved) I got a cash settlement ($8,300) and keep the car (no repairable write-off as car is completely driveable….to cut a very long story short the assessor tells me that it's my car to keep and get repaired by repairer of my choice, etc.)
Damage was 99% repaired by having an after-market rear bar installed ($1,700 all-up). Rest was damage to the spare wheel cover which I've decided to just leave uncovered for now but may put a soft dust cover over it in the future.

Our Patrol had done its thing….more that I can count camping and fishing holidays when the girls were younger. No big 4WD stuff but still plenty soft/off-road action on trips. The car is great…now kept only as the dog car and trips to Bunnings - too good to get rid of and very handy as a second car; cheap to insure on drive/less pay less, etc.

Anyway:
The old girl was always going to need some work….my plan was to invest a minimal amount to keep it going until it dies but now with the cash-out from the insurance I want to do stuff to extend her life.
So, $8,300 cash-out leaves me $6,600 after the rear bar work.
There was some loud crunching noise after the accident and I was worried that one of the rear springs had been broken or displaced so took it to Pedders for an inspection ($28 well spent as I got a full report on what should be done and recommendations).
I got a quote for all work that needed to be done, $3,113 (installed) and a further $938 (installed) for recommended items. Overall cost is $4,051 but I may be able to get $100-$200 less if I get all items done at the same time.

I am by no means complaining about the quote. I knew what the individual items that are required cost before I engaged Pedders and overall the cost for installation looks more than reasonable (I can't see installation being much less anywhere else).

My question/concern/ask of this community:
Is it worth spending ~$4k on suspension work for a vehicle that I don't use often (maybe 5-6k Km per year) or are there recommendations that you have for less dollars.
After suspension work there is still up to $2,600 remaining after what my daughters refer to as 'free money'.
Any recommendation on what to spend that on?

For suspension stuff that is required is; front and rear shocks, front and rear springs, steering damper, tie rod ends and bump stops.
Car is standard as I say but would consider a 2" lift if it was cheaper overall (might look a little wierd with the standard 16" wheels under the lift but I'm not overly concerned).

Thanks all, and again apologies for the long text.

You should benable to getba spring and shock kit for a patrol for less. Its a common upgrade so options are plentiful.

Pedders suspension relort will be for 'as new' standard so its probably overkill. Maybe get a second opinion.

Did a mates GU patrol suspension with lift in our driveway a few months back. Half a day job that isnt overly difficult. He got a Superior suspension kit FWIW.

    • What u reckon about people who cut springs?

      • Doesnt give you any extra ground clearance, its pointless.

    Too long story.
    Summary:
He is after $100-$200 for his1999 toyoto petrol.
Can buy another petrol for that price.

      1. PATROL
      2. NISSAN.
      3. the only patrol youll get for that money will have been flogged to death. Decent ones are closer to 20k.

Are you half diy automotive handy?

Be pretty simple if you know the basics. Heaps of tutorials online. Then get a wheel alignment. Too easy. Sense of satisfaction and take the family on a holiday with the money saved.

From experience pedders is garbage. I’d query whether they even gave you an accurate assessment in their quote. Took an old car to them over 10 years ago and they gave me a $3.5k quote. Took it to another suspension place and it was all done for a bit over $1k. It was because pedders did an incorrect assessment (and obviously over charged)

Jump on a 4WD forum and get good info from there on who is good with suspension on 4WDs in your area.

If you’re in Sydney I can give you some recommendations on dedicated suspension places. Depending on what’s wrong You won’t necessarily save money but will get far better advice and service.

As for the question on line on whether it’s worth it, this is the wrong forum. I drive my track car 4 times a year, I wouldn’t think twice about spending $4k on suspension work when it needs replacing, this opinion however would be on the minority

Pedders suspension is 100%garbage,cheap chinese crap that has been rebadged. You should stick to KYB or a decent brand

Pedders would give you a $4k quote if you took them a brand new car.

  • Thank you all for your inputs so far, especially around second opinions and validity of initial assessment and I would appreciate further comments.
I am fairly handy on the tools and have watched quite a few videos on changing shocks and coils. I must admit I get a bit worried about being able to compress springs to remove them and then what if I stuff up a brake line. I don't mind oil changes, oil filter, spark plugs, etc. but I do worry about starting something that I may not be able to finish so in the case of suspension I am more than happy to pay a professional.
I should add that the mechanic at Pedders fixed the loud crunching noise (it was just the inner guard that had come loose and was rubbing) so I'm now less concerned about timing to have the suspension fixed as I can drive the car without thinking that the back end is going to fall off :)
    I'm in Berwick, 3806.
Other places that I'm looking at are Fulcrum and trying to get a quote from the mechanic that serviced the car last.
I can see places offering 2" lift kits installed for around $2k which includes 4 coil springs and 4 shocks (granted doesn't include steering damper, tie end rods and bumpstops - but they weren't real bit ticket items).
Am I over-thinking this? Should I just do a basic lift kit and have them do the tie end rods and bump stops.
The report from Pedders says the all springs have sagged - will a replacement fix that or is there some extra work/engineering required to make sure the car is balanced?
Sorry for the questions that are probably basic to a lot of you folk out there. I really do appreciate the comments and feedback.

    • How many kms on it?

All springs sag over time. Doesnt mean they're stuffed though. Tie rod ends and bump stops might still be OK, just pedders being over cautious. As mentioned before, they want to gold plate your suspension rather than just fix big problems.

When lifting my mates car compressing the springs was a bit of fun. We used ratchet straps to compress them. If i had my time again, amd was going to do suspension work often itd be worth getting proper spring compressors. Everything else was pretty basic. Bolt on, bolt off. All done with regular jack stands and a trolley jack.

  • I've watch Wheeler Dealers. Don't forget the urethane suspension bushes.

Don't forget to lube them at installation.

      • Now for the rear main seal…..
We'll replace the clutch while we're at it and don't forget to get the flywheel machined and balanced.

        • Flywheel bolts look a bit stretched…is that front UJ showing tightness.May as well do both and re-balance.

          • @Protractor: Oh, and that hole in the exhaust manifold is obvious now we've got the car on the hoist. I'll add that to the list.

            • @DashCam AKA Rolts: Oh dear, a bit of soot near the inlet.Better whip that off and spend umpteen hours cleaning (charging for) the inlet network and upper cylinders. Good news, free air for the tyre top ups today.

It's more about how long you intend to keep it and use it, not how often you use it.
Do it once and do it well. I have heard plenty of ordinary stories about Pedders workmanship. It's based on the quality of the staff within each w/shop location, and much like tyre places, they don't employ rocket scientists, and turnover a lot of staff.

DIY whatever you can do properly, learn if you can step up to some their tasks (Youtube etc) and shop around via reviews for places who can selectively do the other mods you want done. There's a lot of ham-fisted moon units in suspension land.Buyer beware.

  • never really been a fan of pedders, i own a 2003 patrol, and have the full superior engineering kit, although it cost me about 14k, so its probs out of your budget.. but well worth it

    • Who would be a Pedderphile?

Look, tbh honest, with labour etc and its not just the shocks its the bump stops and tie rod ends etc. Its really not that bad of a deal. Plus there should be a warranty component to it as well which you cant have if you do it yourself.
And to get a 2 inch lift shouldnt really alter the cost too much, so that is an option. I would expect tops a $500 difference.
If you want to do it all yourself, sure, I did mine in half a day inc the front steering shock as well. Not bump stops etc though. Tie rod ends can be a bugger to get off FYI.
Your choice really. Shock compressors are enough for me to just go and give it to someone else now though. Was a big younger and braver(dumber maybe) when i did mine.
Unless you are thinking of selling the car and are in nsw, then you can pm me as I miss my old petrol girl and have been looking around…. Oh Bugger, just read you are in qld.
The replacements should fix the sag. Normal sag is part of wear and tear of shocks especially for a car as heavy as the trols are.
And to add to that, ya can do "basic" on a trol, and you will get a basic response. Spend the $ and you will get a very different experience and better level of pleasure out of driving the old girl :D
Mine was worlds apart after I had finished the work, made it much more comfortable to drive and more capable off road.
Where ever you are hvítr einn, I miss ya!

  • I dont rate their stuff, google other brands

Id do the min possible, chances are a lift kit wont make your trips better
