Does this game work on the original switch?

    • +2

      No

          • +1

@Koffee: Plenty of PS5 games don't work on PS4, not sure what your point was

            • +8

              @Merlict: I would say ALL PS5 games don't work on PS4

              • @Ema000: True haha. I meant more at PS5 launch, many titles were available on 4 and 5.

Nintendo only seem to be doing that with Metroid 4 this time around.

            • @Merlict: @Merlict plenty of backward compatible titles were released. Nintendon't.

        • +5

Because it requires a more powerful processor and was implemented for the Switch 2?

It won’t work in a NES either, even if you blow in it.

  • could probably play through story mode and sell it for the same price

    • +15

Then what are you gonna play for 10 years until they release switch 3?

      • zelda musou 3

      • Re-releases of zelda, supersmash or Mario that's been available on wii 10 years ago

    • +23

      Or the SNES.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Used the code on the pro controller so I can still utilise the discount but pick up Mario Kart from brick and motar store on launch day

    • Same grabbed the pro controller with the discount using previously stored gift cards in my rewards app

  • -1

Never preorder…… except for when it's a game you want

    • Why? This is good enough of a price to preorder especially Donkey Kong with the code and discount gift card. I got essentially 30% off.

    • +5

So… always? When would people be pre-ordering a game they don't want?

      • Yep, just making fun of people that say never preorder for games that they dont want to preorder.

  • What's Big Dub's cancellation policy? Never pre-ordered with them before, I'd be fine to pay 90 (I guess) but would ideally cancel and pick it up for less closer to release.

    • +2

It probably won't be cheaper than this + discount gift cards. It will probably be after release but I think it will take a bit to see this price again especially with it being brand new and Nintendo not wanting discounts.

      • I'd normally be pretty confident in day one discounts, but it could go either way considering the overall price increase of all S2 games.

Bought Mario Kart 8 twice, paid about what they want for this now in total for both. Hell, when I got MK8 on Wii U they threw in a download of another game because the sales were that shit at the time.

        • +1

Prices have gone up a lot you are right. Wii u flopped so they definitely had more discounts. Nintendo is going to be strong on their prices unless it flops again this time around.

          • +2

@HaydosK: Nintendo “flop” consoles have the best bargains.

I remember picking up first-party GameCube games for $20 each when Toys ‘R’ Us were clearing out Nintendo stock due to poor sales.

            Best value console ever.

            • +2

@axyh: $100 Kmart Wii U basic w/ Skylanders bundle has entered the chat

              • @TheDukeOfNukem: Ah I remember picking this one up at Target in a Bunbury road trip of all places lol

              • +2

@TheDukeOfNukem: The GameCube got down under $100 during its Toys ‘R’ Us clearance days.

I picked up a brand new GameCube, Metroid Prime 1+2, Twilight Princess, Paper Mario TTYD, Pikmin 1+2, Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Sunshine, and an extra controller… all for under $300.

But I concede the Wii U Skylanders Bundle is hard to beat.

                • @axyh:

That’s one heck of a deal for under $300

                  • +1

@YoursTruly: Correction, it was Wind Waker, not Twilight Princess.

But I was set for a year or more. It was crazy how cheap they were clearing everything out for because the GameCube “flopped”.

Bring on more flops I say.

            • @axyh: Yes that was what I was saying. But I'm just saying buying before or just after launch won't help. You need to wait a bit longer to see if it flops.

            • @axyh: Yeah, I remember picking up a GameCube when the priced dropped to ~$150. It ended up being a pretty great console. I also picked up the Wii U for around the same.

Could it be the same story again with the Switch 2?
              * scratches chin tightarsedly *

  • +3

Thanks Op. i got the console only from the good guys shopback deal and got the game here. Much prefer physical than digital for resale value

  • +2

Mario kart for $89….i am a little hesitant to get it for anything above the usual $64.

I’ll probably wait it out till near launch

    • +1

Days of $64 are gone, RRP has rocketed up, so special prices are higher too

      • +6

If people vote with their wallets prices will decrease

        • yes i remember when PS3 games were $109 when they were first out

          • -1

            @BoomTetrisForJeff: That was 20 years

            Inflation

            • @freoleo: They also ended up dropping from the absurd 120 RRP at launch because people weren't buying them. Just like how the console price dropped and then sales went up.

That's not inflation, that's basic economics. If something isn't selling, lower the price. If something is selling, no need to lower the price.

It's the unfortunate reason a digital PS5 released at 600 AUD five years ago, and now is 125% of the cost, $750 AUD. If the people keep paying, why would you stop charging them?

              • @TheDukeOfNukem: $120 then is alot more than $109 now though… (RBA tells me $193 in 2024)

Thats the point, the prices now aren't even as high as they were 20 years ago

It's been a realistic rise in price unfortunately for consumers, if anything it lagged last generation, probably due to the Wii U's failure and the Switch being a hybrid of a handheld (which have generally had cheaper game prices)

FYI $80 games in 06 would be $130 now (RBA)

So yeah, games are comparatively cheaper now than 20 years ago

                • @freoleo: In an isolated comparison they are, no one has ever denied this.

But 20 something years ago, a game selling a million copies was a pretty decent measure of success. Now we have Spider-Man 2 selling over 10 million and being "on the way" to turning a profit. In the same breath, we have GTA 5 selling over 200 million, we have Split Fiction, some indie thing I hadn't even heard of before release, selling a million in a day or two. The market is bigger than ever, so games are selling more than ever, which means they're bringing in more money than ever. And this is all to say nothing of DLC, which is another way games make a shitload more money than they ever used to.

But also, everything else is more expensive. Houses are at an all time high. Rents are even worse because you're in the same boat but don't even own it. A slab of (profanity) Coke is 50 bucks now. It's not that videogames aren't worth the price rise, it's not that videogames haven't earned a price rise (I'd argue DLC is the price rise though), it's that EVERYTHING around videogames has gone up a shitload too and when people have to decide between fuel in the car or another Assassin's Creed to put atop their 50 previous AC games, well, it's fair not to bother with Ezio's return of the revenge of the rise of the fallen brotherhood or whatever.

20 odd years ago, movie tickets on a cheap day cost me like 6 or 7 bucks if even, my local independent was 4.50 every day. Now, that independent is closed (RIP Croydon Cinema) and 23/24 bucks for a ticket is nothing out of the ordinary. Avengers 2019 came out, and for a minute (before Avatar rereleased) was the highest grossing movie of all time. People still pay when they want something…but they're few and far between. Some movies will do well because they are quality movies people want to see. Others will not. In the same way many games could charge 120 and still sell, many will not because people have more important shit than videogames to buy, so you wait on a sale or skip it all together.

Games, movies, all of that stuff, it's a luxury. It shouldn't be. But in today's economy, they are. If I had to choose between buying dinner or a new game, me personally, I might starve one night, but if I had to choose between the game or a meal on the table for the family? Well, Ubisoft can have 120 less dollars from me every time.

                  • +1

@TheDukeOfNukem: Back on the day less people played video games. It was a niche market that was consumed relatively less hence the higher prices to justify costs per unit.

Nowadays video games have a wider reach and pretty much every man, grandma, dog (and their fleas) play video games. Games should in essence cost less per unit as they cover a wider reach.

                    • -1

@YoursTruly: They do cost less per unit, thats the whole point

They're already cheaper than 20 years ago, at this new price point

                      • @freoleo:

They do cost less per unit

                        Bold claim.
                        Source?

                        • @YoursTruly: The prices are cheaper adjusted for inflation, I posted above

  • Why not the bundle for $70 more

    • +2

Because the bundle contains a code, not the physical cartridge.

      • +3

On one hand - the digital is awesome for always having mkw available in the system as a ‘Constant game’ without the need to swap carts.
on the other hand - physical is king to tangibly have.

I guess I might end up buying a physical when they # “DROP THE PRICE!”

        • Yes, I know I will never sell Mario Kart so good to keep on the system.

          Everything else… physical cartridge please.

  • +2

Oh no, Switch 2 games are available at reasonable prices already. Now what will I complain about? Whatever the next popular thing to complain about is I guess.

    • How about Apple? That's always in fashion for a good whine.

      • Well, 256gb base in some Macs is pretty bad. Other than that, there shouldn't be any.

  • +3

Back in my day I remember paying $120 for Turok and Shadows of the empire at launch on the n64.

    $89 is chump change.

    • +2

I have a Jurassic Park mega drive game floating around somewhere with the original price tag of $100 still on it - $228.41 in today's money according to this.

Mario Kart games have hundreds if not thousands of hours of entertainment value yet people still complain. A family going to the movies for 2 hours costs more than this

      • -2

Yeah, leave the multi billion dollar company alone

      • -1

Still need to spend close to another $400 on controllers for a family of 4 to enjoy it together.

        • It would only cost $139. The Switch 2 comes with two controllers and a joy-con set will cost you $139.

        • +1

Can use switch controllers on it

        • Nah. Little brothers still get the cheap knockoff controller.

          It's part of growing up.

  • Works on Rune Factory as well, which makes it $89, probably others. (Doesn't work on DK - edit: doh because $100 min heh)

This is probably still too expensive for this game but I took the punt so I have something other than the MKW to play near launch.

  • Thanks! Used this to buy Donkey Kong Bananza for $80!

  • +1

Thanks, but gaming is getting too expensive, time to find a new hobby.

  • +1

Well, that’s MKW direct was nothing….special.

Surprisingly uninteresting and pointless Nintendo Direct presentation.
