part of the extra 10% off flash sale, discount automatically applies in cart at checkout. flash sale ends in 1 day 10 hours.
makes this an all time low better than $627 with the $20 signup voucher (you can try stacking but I don't think so).

positives: raised edge protects glass, buttons only control so no accidental taps.
negatives: buttons only means entering the garmin pay code in the morning takes a bit longer than usual.

some things I learned from youtube:

  • it's got gorilla type glass not scratch proof sapphire like Epix series ($1k+ watch).
  • it's button press navigation only, not touch screen (entering Garmin pay code takes time).
  • doesn't have maps.
  • no solar = USB recharging only.
  • it has flashlight (with red light) and multisport mode.
  • AMOLED = more data fields (incl. more detailed weather/notifications).
  • custom shortcuts available on buttons, e.g. press and hold one button, or press and hold combinations of buttons to trigger shortcut.
  • Garmin Pay = yes.

  • How does Garmin Pay work without NFC connectivity? the website says it doesn't have NFC.

    • I believe it has NFC for Garmin Pay (Source: DC Rainmaker)

    • fyi if you are actually interested and do not want to waste time (when posting this deal expires in 1 day).

whenever you see a product and something doesn't make sense. go to the official website Garmin.com and check the features there.

stores like this and amazon, ebay get the descriptions wrong all the time. I just read a 1 star amazon review by a french guy upset because the bag he bought was tiny when the description said like 50cm x 30cm which was wrong. if he had actually clicked through the pictures he would have known though because it's a tiny bag in the pictures.

      • oh okay, that makes sense.

Big draw for me with the Instinct is the battery life, 30 days with the Instinct 2. You do have to accept a monochromatic LCD display for the privilege however. Which can be hard to see at night, even with backlight.

Looks like the AMOLED screen significantly impacts the battery unfortunately.

the new Instinct 3 solar has similar good battery life, and reviews say a much more powerful solar panel which gives you even more than the old Instinct solar.

but they overpriced the 3 Solar way too much imo. it's not enough of a upgrade over the old solar model to charge like $200 extra retail price.

    • also AMOLED with 18 days battery (or 32 hours GPS) for the smaller one (in deal) isn't bad, kicks any other smartwatches butt in terms of battery.

bigger 50mm AMOLED gets 24 days (or 40 hours GPS).

I'm seeing 28 days battery for Instinct 2 Solar btw. also or 30 hours GPS (but 48 hrs with Solar).
also for anyone else reading yes GPS hours is a or situation. e.g. if you use 1 hour GPS expect to take half a day off from smartwatch battery days.

      • I'm generally skeptical of the published battery life as real world use case situations can offer quite different results.

I had a Garmin Forerunner 45 which states 14 day battery life. But if you end up using all the body health functionality and wear it while sleeping to track sleep (as Garmin encourages you to do), and go for runs, you'd be lucky to get 2-3 days.

It also comes down to cost. I got an Instinct 2 when it was on sale for $250 due to it being a pukey colour. Battery life and cost where key considerations for me so it was a nobrainer. Now that I have better battery life I"m actually able to use the sleep tracking and other monitoring that I wasn't able to use with the forerunner and finding it actually somewhat useful.

        • yeah just saying the AMOLED is not far off to Instinct 2 Solar if you don't get much sun with the solar.

also do you use the sleep mode schedule?

my friend has a more expensive garmin, you can set the sleep schedule so the watch goes into low power with bluetooth off, no tilt to wake and low brightness at night etc. most features become unavailable like viewing notifications, timer but you are supposed to be sleeping anyway so.

so basically 6 to 8 hours in this low power mode everyday is a big saving. they said they get better than the claimed battery life because of this feature. you seem to use sleep tracking though not sure how it affects that (friend said they still get steps and stress scores at night so some sensors are still active).
