Faulty Samsung T7 a Few Months out of Warranty

My samsung t7 1GB SSD has just started playing up on me, just out of the warranty period 3 years. The SSD was originally purchased from officeworks. I would have though a SSD would be more robust than HDD. What are the odds I can get a replacement under ACL since its past the warranty period.

To be honest I am more annoyed I have potentially lost some data and some video edits that I have already been working on.

What are the odds I can get a replacement under ACL since its past the warranty period.

The only way is to contact them and find out

    • yeah that would be the obvious solution…

but mainly posting here, in case anyone else has had success and what they might have said to help their case be more successful.

    lost data

I think most of us have already been there at least once, at least it wasn’t irreplaceable data… right?

    • Just priceless video memories from holidays and special events… but I think I've managed to transfer them to another hard drive before it completely dies. Haven't really had a chance to fully verify that the videos are fine and aren't corrupted though

Always a good idea to duplicate data on 2 or even 3 hard drives for exactly this eventuality.

  • Price?

    • $150 - I feel I overpaid for 1TB, considering how low it has historically gone on ozbargain

New of the exact same one is around $179 to $220. At $150, 3 years were pretty good long years. I doubt you will get any longer under ACL. You can ask but if they refuse, then you just move on.

I recommend to test the inside SSD to another external casing and cable, I saw it can be as low as $10. This way you can be sure the SSD is dead, not just the case and cable.

Have you installed the Samsung Magician Software ? it will tell you how your drive is performing

A long format will often revive a drive. You need some way to monitor the SMART data once you are done. I suggest Hard Drive Sentinel and just have it running always. It’s saved me more than once.

Did you buy with a credit card that gives you 1yr extended warranty?

  • OP I Have a question. did you plug in the T7 regularly?

because someone told me once that SSD relies on electricity to keep it's data. if you don't plug it in for long times you can kill it. it's different from a hard drive which uses some kind of magnetic force to store the data without power required.

and they also said this is why you barely ever hear about internal SSD dying quickly, it's because it's powered up regularly. but a external can be unplugged for a longer time.

I think it's true because I have two Samsung T7 1TB, make sure to plug them regularly (if I notice I didn't plug it in for a month I will just plug it in, then safely remove it). and both still going fine 1.5 to 2 years later.

  • So just an update for anyone else reading this. Contacted samsung warranty support, went through model number, date of purchase, serial number and was advised it was past the 3 year warranty period. I politely said that am disappointed it failed not too far off from the warranty period and that I would have thought a more expensive SSD would be more robust than an HDD, and if the issue could be escalated/reassessed. The samsung team support member said he would request it be looked into.

A few days later I got a RMA number and sent it away. And fast forward a few weeks later I have just received a replacement model. Happy days!
