Secret Icon McLaren Vale Shiraz – Unlabelled Parcel

From one of McLaren Vale’s TOP producers comes this unlabelled, small-parcel Shiraz. Due to a discreet agreement, we’re able to offer this outstanding wine under the radar and at a fraction of its usual price.

Tasting Note:

Powerful and poised, this Shiraz opens with concentrated aromas of dark plum, black cherry, and baking spices, layered with hints of licorice, mocha, and toasted oak. The palate is bold and full-bodied, with velvety tannins, impeccable balance, and a long, plush finish that speaks to the pedigree of its vineyard origins.

Ray Jordan's 94pts review below,

A first-rate old vine Shiraz from McLaren Vale. It’s rich and lavishly generous, illustrating the plump generosity of McLaren Vale in a good year. The nose has an earthy dusty nuance mingling with deep and concentrated plummy black fruits showing some nice sage-like notes. Neatly integrated with a dry, savoury and dried herb dominant finish.

What's the catch? Can't see the RRP of $1027 being legitimate if this can be sold at 80% off lol.

Was this a bad year for the wine or something, or is the RRP just fake?

    • The wine is without a label, so the winery would like to clear the stock rather then gettig it labelled.

      • Bad year then I assume?

@johnshirazman: Really doesn't make sense though. When something sounds too good to be true, it always is.

If it's strong, and actually worth RRP - then they wouldn't need to sell at 80% off to clear stock.

@mahdoo: it's only 30 6-packs, so hardly worth reordering additional labels and sending back down the bottling line

              boxes are branded

            • @mahdoo: This is normal for wine. If they produce too much wine they want to discard it rather than sell it and flood the market. The only reason people pay high prices is perceived scarcity, so that is what they are protecting.

It doesn't cost any more to make a bottle of $10 RRP wine than it does to make a bottle of $100 RRP wine.

      • More likely it was to be exported and isn't labelled until it's is to be shipped. Its a lot less effort than being left with a heap of Chinese labelled stock that you can't clear domestically.

    • I can't find the 2021 available anywhere except for this deal, there are some 2018, 2020 around for $85 a bottle so I would assume that is what Ultihorne would sell it for typically. The 2020 scored a 96 compared to the 2021's 94 on winepilot.

  • Seems like a decent price but difficult to find any information on that particular vintage. This would be the website for the winery that makes the wine, but its 2020 instead of 2021 so your milage may vary. Might be worth a chance ofr someone who like a decent shiraz. Winepilot says its good drinking from now until 2035.

Meh, I just rolled the dice and put in an order, thanks for the deal OP

    • yep, no label means it could be two buck chuck or a hundred buck or a one hundred dollar scholar.

  • Yeah, the description seems to match the Ulithorne Paternus Shiraz. I've had other wines from them and they've all been great. It's a solid winery, not one of those that jacks up the RRP for international markets.

I bought unlabelled overrun bottles directly from wineries, so it could be one of those. It's a common practice for wineries to clear unlabelled bottles when they're low on labels, rather than ordering a large batch just for a few bottles.

  • This possibly be the one?

    • Doesn’t look like the one you mentioned, more likely Paternus.

      • I know so little about wine. How do you come to such a conclusion?

        • +1

the OP’s description matches Paternus description on winepilot and wine-search sites.

          • @bilbies: And I also sense OP is forced to practice deliberate vagueness. Why is that? Why can't they say what it is?.

@ johnshirazman It was “only 30 6-packs available from bottling of overrun” BUT now you got more?

  • !!!!!

Placed an order last week and not dispatched yet. Tried to call but the call goes straight to voicemail. Left a message but no one bothered to call back. Sent an email - no reply. Very disappointed.

    • Can you please send me you're order number and I'll chase it up, you should have revised a dispatch email already
