Close to lowest ever price for this well rated projector. It's ~4 years old, but still holds its ground. Cheapest 4k, I reckon, at least in this brightness class.

The ViewSonic PX701-4K is a 4k HDR projector primarily marketed for gaming. It has two HDMI 2.0 ports, both capable of either 4k @ 60Hz or 1080p @ 240Hz. The projector also comes with an Ultra-Fast Input option promising input lag as low as 4.2ms. The projector has auto vertical keystone technology to eliminate trapezoid effects when installed at an angle and an advanced projection warping tool that corrects distorted images when they're projected on a curved surface. Depending on the selected picture mode, its light source is rated for anywhere from 6,000 to 20,000 hours. Finally, it has an integrated 10W speaker.

The ViewSonic PX701-4K is alright for watching movies. Its native contrast is great, and its brightness is decent, leading to a good viewing experience in a dark room. Unfortunately, the projector drops the ball when it comes to color, as its colors are dim, its color gamut isn't very wide, and its color accuracy is wildly inaccurate out of the box. You can barely improve it with calibration.

That is why I'm asking what is the price for a new one you quarterwit. Not one that is 4 years old.

  • Another one from ViewSonic in the same price class, but low stock: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/887383?page=12#comment-164…

Have this for a number of years now. Replaced Benq PE7700 (?) at the time. PQ is not bad.

  • I wonder if the PQ will be different between traditional 4k projector and the ultra short throw one.

I was interested in projector but the thought of having to set up the distance between the pj and screen kinda put me off. The ust projector seems to be a bit simpler to set up but again im not an expert just want to hear others opinion on this

  • it's been around this price for a while now

Nice price for what it is. I have this projector, it is alright. But it will struggle with dark scenes.

The other disadvantage is that it used traditional halogen lamp which can get really hot and has limited life.

There are some entry level laser projectors that might be of better value, even though they may cost more.

  • I'm getting really pissed off with projectors, in the last 15 years I have had 4 and they all died. 3 Benq's and a Sony. 2 new, 2 second hand. I'm now using a Nebula capsule that was only ever meant to be for camping on my screen setup, it's only 100 ansi lumens and 720p but it kinda works for now. Once you get into the movie you don't really think about the specs. I'm honestly thinking about a $200 china special that puts out 500 lumens and 1080p, I mean that's a big step up from the Nebula but nothing like my previous projectors. Getting hard to justify another $1000 to $2000 for an occasional movie when these things are consistently shitting the bed on me.

    • I have a Chinesium LED projector from 2012. Paid $250 ish for it.
Still works perfectly. Android Ice Cream Sandwich is well beyond it's time, but have no complaints with it…

that's because you either don't use it or have incredibly low viewing standards

        • +1

          Probably the latter…
Around 5m projection in a converted granny flat. I also have a Benq projector (halogen though, not an LED).
Couldn't tell the difference, except one used 1/6th the power

    • What light source was each? DMD or LCD?

Have you tried LED/Laser from known Chinese brands like Xgimi or Xiaomi or Formovie? I have some projectors reaching 5+ years from these brands in the cycle of friends and no complaints.

    • cooling is the issue, if you don't maintain them they will die as the cool system degrades, the more dusty the environment the sooner they will fail

some of the benqs had a blower style fan buried deep in the guts, those would clog up and cook the internals

    No thanks.

    • This is an ultra budget model - you can grab a laser model with spectacular colour like the BenQ but it's three times the price.
