Bec Hardy McLaren Vale Shiraz 2024 - 93 Wine Pilot
One of the two vineyards in McLaren Vale which provides the fruit for this terrific Shiraz is the Lower Tintara vineyard, originally planted by Thomas Hardy way back in the 1880s. One has to wonder if anywhere else on the planet, which has vines approaching 150 years in age, would ever offer a wine at this price? Fat chance. This is such cracking value. Maturation was for ten months in a mix of French and American oak. A vibrant purple colour here, there is a wonderfully lifted and aromatic nose with notes of violets, plums, chocolate, mocha, coffee beans, cassis and mulberries. This is one of those ever-so-alluring noses that if not careful, you’ll find yourself sitting and smelling the wine, forgetting to drink it. But when you do, it is fresh, plush, finely balanced with silky tannins and really impressive length. Love it and it will surely improve over the coming years, meriting a higher score. Enjoy this over the next ten to fifteen years
Family Crest SA Shiraz 2022 - 93 Wine Pilot
A deep purple, magenta colour here, this is powerfully aromatic. This is a concentrated and slightly earthy style of Shiraz. Big and bold with black fruit notes, chocolate, bay leaves and beefstock. As we move to the palate, the flavours of sweet mocha, coffee beans and dark chocolate move to the fore. There is good focus and intensity and the wine offers firm tannins with good length. It is one for enjoying now and for the next eight years. Really good value, especially if you enjoy the bigger, bolder and more burly style of Shiraz.
Pertaringa 'Lakeside' Adelaide Chardonnay 2024 - 92 Wine Pilot
The vineyard, the Lower Tintara Vineyard in Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale, which supplies grapes for this wine was originally planted by Thomas Hardy back in the 1880s. Fermentation was in older French oak followed by a further three months maturation. A gleaming yellow with shades of green, the nose gives us notes of peaches, stonefruits, figs and dried herbs. A subtle, well-crafted style with focus and direction and an appealing texture. There is a hint of nuts on the finish. Good length here. This is a wine which should provide pleasure for the next five years.
To Cut A Long Story Short SA Sauvignon Blanc 2024 - 90 WIne Pilot
The colour is a shining pale lemon and the nose moves right into tropical notes with gooseberries, citrus, dry herbs and a minerally support. This is simple but satisfying. A wine of medium length with a clean finish, it is an ideal poolside style for drinking now.
