Braun ThermoScan 5 IRT 6030 Ear Thermometer

Close to the all time low of $93.08.

If you're after an ear thermometer, this is one of the better ones. Note that the more expensive ThermoScan 7+ model requires you to select the age category (0-3m, 3-36m, 36m+) before taking a measurement which many people find annoying, from what I've read in reviews, so this is probably a better choice.

As a side note, if you want to save money, consider this infrared forehead thermometer from Kmart instead.

We have the 7+ - and the selection of age category everytime didn’t bother us at all, it’s pretty quick.

Yeah, we must have the same one as we have to select the age and it's honestly a non issue. People do seem to get annoyed at every tiny thing these days though…

It doesn't make the product unusable, but it's just a pointless feature that was created, and has no ability to turn it off.
Definitely worth mentioning and would make me buy this one instead of the 7. (I own the 7).

        • We bought the 7 specifically as we had an infant. It's a useful feature that takes a few seconds to get past. If they were the same price I'd get the 7 every time even now that we don't really need it.

          • @ozbs25: Yea fair enough, each to their own.

As an owner of the 7, do you find AA batteries don't really "fit" or make good contact? I have to use aluminum foil to make good contacts, otherwise it randomly turns off.

  • I find the infrared thermometers are toys. Not recommended. I've had them vary by 2-3 degrees on the same person between multiple scans. This amount is the difference between healthy and high fever/potential death. The Braun thermoscans are great. Bought them for $250+ during covid and worth their weight in gold.

    • That hasn't been my experience. I've scanned myself and all my family members multiple times and it's come back with the same reading within 0.2° every time. It also came in 3rd place in a Choice review (with the same overall score as the Braun as it happens).

      • I actually have the Braun thermal scanner too. That's the one I have issues with. It could be a faulty one however it's a very disappointing experience. That's a pretty consistent reading but is it accurate? Do you have another thermometer like the thermoscan 5 or 7 that you have as a baseline?

        • I don’t have another working thermometer (I had an older Braun ThermoScan but it was damaged by leaking batteries), but according to what I’ve read, forehead temperatures are usually 0.3 to 0.6°C lower than oral and ear readings. My Kmart cheapie measures 36.5±0.2° so that seems correct. At any rate I now know what the normal temperature is, so if it reads 37.5° then I know that’s ~1° above normal.
