This doesn't seem to get much attention but posting as it's a really handy device for the price.

Bascially turns any switch into a smart switch which can be controlled using app or voice command via HomeKit, Alexa or Google.

Works great if you want to automate/schedule lights i.e Porch light or if you're really lazy and don't want to get off the couch to turn on/off the room lights ;-D

Enjoy!

Note: While the product can be sold legally in Australia, installation of said product may require that you obtain an electrical licence or certificate before you can do any electrical wiring work, or have someone certified perform work for you.

Not DIY-able legally, unless you are a sparkie?

      • +11

There's absolutely nothing illegal at all about this. Anyone can purchase it and ask an electrician to install it for them (self-sourced). This post should stay up.

        • +2

Nothing illegal about selling it. However, it shouldn't have "DIY" in the Amazon title when describing it in Australia though, as the only way for it to work is to wire it up to 240V.

          • +3

@NigelTufnel: And that's fair, but we don't need to go taking down posts as a result. There are lots of Amazon-US deals that are on OzB and we don't need to police their descriptions. There is some DD required and most would know not to wire their own electricity.

A disclaimer in the post body at best is all that is required.

              • +1

@PainToad: Where has OzB claimed that it is DIY? It's not in the title or description. Only on Amazon, which OzB isn't liable for. Amazon is the vendor.

                  • +1

@PainToad: Bunnings website promotes the same.
Should Bunnings stop selling all plumbing and electrical items that require a plumber or electrician to install?

                      @rifter:

Bunnings doesn't claim those can be installed DIY.

                      • @PainToad: So by your arguement an electrician cannot do it himself.

                          I've answered this already.

@PainToad: Thankfully you and seriousquokka have saved ozB's liability by making it clear from a quick scroll on the page that it is not legally DIY-able despite what clicking through to the link might imply ;-)

Anyone know if you can get meross to work with home assistant.

    • -3

Yep, it works great via the third-party linked services under the 'works with Google' section.

      • +3

They were not asking about Google Home or Google Assistant.

        • -1

          What are they asking? 🤔

    • +1

This appears to be the mss810 which at least one user reports as working with the meross_lan integration.
      https://github.com/krahabb/meross_lan/discussions/381

    • I am using it now and can confirm it works with the garage door opener and the smart plug. Not sure about PO's relay.

      https://github.com/krahabb/meross_lan

      • Same - I am using Meross garage door opener and the smart plug without issues.
Unfortunately, I haven't yet been able to get local-only access working on the smart plug.

      • How did you install it?

      • Same here, Garage opener and Smart Plug work perfectly with HA via HACS.

  • +1

Meross def works with Google Assistant. Currently use the garage door opener.

This relay needs neutral wiring back to the board. Very few houses are wired with neutral, at least in my experience.

    • +3

All the houses I've lived in are wired with neutral.

      • +1

2020 house build does not have neutral at the switch, only in the roof (is my understanding).
        Obviously each house is different!

        • Doesn't matter if it's in the roof or looped at the switch, it still has a neutral. Most sparkies either join the neutrals in a connector, or use the loop terminals on the switch.

          • @stuffandthat: Obviously yes it still has a neutral, just not at the switch where it's needed for this device.

            • @Recollect9764: Your sparkie will run one from where it is to where it's needed.

              • @stuffandthat: I mean, if possible, sure. But surely you can agree that it's an important consideration to know whether your house has neutral to the switch and won't need wires pulled, or whether you may need to fork over a large amount of money to pull a new neutral in? I think you're getting caught up in semantics and missing the actual point of the original commenter.

      • Must be a WA thing

    • +1

Then how does anything work if you only have active and no wiring for neutral?

      • +1

Tha active will be wired from switchboard through to switch on the wall through to the end device (e.g. lightbulb). Neutral will be wired from switchboard through to lightbulb via a different path that doesn't pass by the wall switch

        • Must be an older home. All of mine (Circa 2000) are run as three core.

Anyone have experience between this and the Shelly?

    • I came here to ask the exact same question. I have two Shelley's that I haven't installed yet and I was hoping someone you be able to comment on the difference between the two products.

    • +1

Shelly's can be used with 12/24V supplies as well, so are actually able to be used for DIY projects like lighting/fans, etc. Might be a better option, doesn't look like the same is the case for these ones.

    • +1

I’ve Shelly’ed my entire home and it’s been great. Flashing the module allows it to natively work with HomeKit.

I have Meross plug adapter. They work great too but I find Shelly easier to use, purely from a software point of view. Especially now Shelly has newer versions too.

But if this is cheaper, I’ll buy this over Shelly

      • Technical question.
Shelly can switch on change of physical switch state, hence works with two-way switches if installed on switched active to light line. Why does Meross description say does NOT work with two way switches? Does the Meross device not support change of state switching?

      • I rather Shelly also, and they do zigbee ones now as well

    • I have 8 or so Shelly's installed and they are brilliant. I wouldn't go with anything else. Actually getting two more installed tomorrow, with another 4 on the way.

      • Nice. Which shelly model do you use? What are some things you use them for other than the light switches?

  • Hoping someone here can guide me - so if I've 3 switches on the board and I get it installed behind, will it let me control them individually or just one ON-OFF control for all 3?

    • +1

All possible (might need multiple devices if multiple options required), talk to your installer. Given your question this definitely not a DIY job for yourself.

      • Thanks @rifter, when you say possible - is that by using 3 separate controllers or 1?

    • +1

It would control each one individually, so you would need 3 (one for each switch, which would get pretty crowded behind the switch plate). I'm sure if you wired it to all three switches to one device you could get it to control all three at once but I don't think that's recommended.

    • You could use a Shelly 2PM which would control two switches individually, and a Shelly 1 to do the third switch.

  • Go for shelly instead

  • Has anyone used one of these with a three-wire outdoor sensor?

I want to make the driveway lights turn on when the garage door opens.

    • +1

Do you ever want to turn on the driveway lights if garage door is closed? Do you ever want to turn off driveway lights when garage door open? If so, you need to consider two-way operation possiblities first.

  • There are cheaper option and does exactly the same work.

Except for the HomeKit integration, which is absent in the product you have listed.

This device is not compatible with HomeKit. But you can add Tap-to-Run Scene to Siri Shortcut in smart life app.

Further, OP's listing is for a smart relay, not a garage door opener (which comes with the required magnetic sensor). You can make a smart relay do the garage door opening thing, but without the sensor there isn't the right amount of "smarts"

  • Anyone know if this lets pass through of 240v or reduces the switch to 12v when hooked up ?
