Cheapest for these (I think?) top of the line 6 bolt rotors. Cheaper delivered than getting them from Aliexpress even. $10 for shipping to Sydney.

Shimano is working on ABS for bikes…
I'm just gonna wait until we have AEB and regenerative braking for bikes…
regen braking on an e-bike, now that sounds like something i'm interested in.
1 thing however that was a major decision with me picking my latest e-bike. I grabbed my e-bike recently because it had mid mounted motor (not hub motor), the reason why i valued this so much is because it meant the front and rear wheels are pretty much "standard" wheels like most other bikes, and accordingly if you have a problem on the side of the road it is pretty easy to fix, whilst e-bike with a hub wheel require more tools and bike-specific parts.
I like the idea of regen-braking, but so long as they can do it without changing the wheel to something proprietary.
regen works with weight, bikes are getting lighter, its not worth it
Trait Regen on E-Bikes Regen on Electric Cars Added Weight Significant (heavy hub motor) Not much impact Energy Recovered Very little (<5% range) Noticeable (10–30% range) Complexity Higher (wiring, electronics, etc.) Already built-in Benefit Minimal extra range Substantial extra range Braking Intensity Usually light Frequent, heavy Usual Motor Type Requires direct drive hub motor Standard in most EVs @shap08: So what you're saying is I need to pack on the KG's to really get the full benefit out of regen….. challenge accepted.
But yeah if it requires hub motor then it's a no-go for me
Not mid drive, but Grin has lightweight hub motors that include regen.

They're a lot smaller and lighter than most of the other options.
My Hub motor/wheel comes out like a standard wheel and I have the added benefit of motor power if/when the chain fails.
Ive done about 6000km and havent had the wheel need to be replaced on the side of the road, but i have had the chain/derailleur give me issues. I managed to get home on battery power only in those cases.

Don't know where you are, but here in NSW, that's illegal on public roads.
@Laserface: Sure, and part of my decision making process fory purchase was to keep it all above board…I guess if you are open to breaking the law it opens many more options for you
Doesn't Regen braking slow you down when you back off the power?
It's a shame that the entire bike industry seems to be phasing out rim brakes, I don't get why, sure they might be viable on mountain, maybe gravel bikes, but on road/endurance? Just makes the bike heavier which you then have to spend extra money on to get the weight back down, not the mention to risk of brake lock ups during high speeds or wet roads.
Rim brakes have been fine for the past 60+ years, on various terrains in all weather conditions, yet you hear the bike industry tell it, disk brakes is the best invention since the wheel.
Absolutely. For anyone other than the top end, disk breaks are unnecessary.
The bike industry just needs to sell something new, more complex, and more expensive.
i dont ride that fast but I like to put thicker tyres on my road bikes… i think its mainly due to that. with rim brakes, its a bit harder to put thicker tyres as if you need to take off the wheels, you will need to readjust the brake calipers.
we are now starting to see 40mm tyres being used at Paris-Roubaix and i thought back then my gravel bike with 40mm was already thick but now people put 50mm tyres on gravel bikes.
Yes I understand people wanting to put wider tyres on their current/older bikes and cant, but that is mainly due to design and not really a limit of rim brakes. I had a 20 year old huffy mountain bike that had like 60mm tyres with v-rim brakes. Alternatively, I had a Merida Ride 500(road endurance) from 2016 with disc brakes that wouldn't fit anything wider than 30mm due to frame limit.
We're just wanting something outside of their design, I mean I get laughed out of a bike shop when I ask if they have new road bikes with rim brakes, whereas 20 -30 years ago I would have been laughed out the store for asking for road bikes with anything beyond 20mm wide tyres.
@binary101: wow, i didnt realise there are no rim brakes for new bikes…
also, don't forget the hassle of having to deal with carbon wheels vs aluminium…
I hated the sound of rim brakes on carbon wheels and they dont feel as grippy as rim brakes on aluminium wheels… that's why some carbon rim brake wheels have aluminium tracks
agreed. im glad i have them on my cargo bike when going downhill with 2 kids on the back but for everything else theyre pointless
E-bikes go fast enough and weigh enough that having a disc brake on the front at the least is a very good idea. I wont regurgitate the common talking points but all the pros of disc brakes are very good ones to have, with very little trade off for an e-bike.
I personally find the feel of a disc brake to be infinitely better and if I my bike actually had the option of fitting a disc on the rear, I would.
you can get adapters so you can. I used to use one called a2z disc brake adapter, plenty of others though specialized used to make one too, heaps from china
@frondono: I dont have the room on the rear hub thanks to motor/cassette otherwise I would use one :)
I have no issues with disc brakes on cargo, ebikes, etc. But I really don't like how the industry is getting rid of rim brakes on all bikes. This is especially dodgy when it comes to low to budget friendly bikes, where the disc brakes are mechanical cable operated and have no braking advantage over rim brakes, actually they are slightly worse in most aspects because of the torque advantage that rim brakes offer.
Rim brakes are similar to drum brakes on cars / other vehicles. They work but are not effective for all conditions on a regular basis.
It is difficult to get traction with rubber based rim brakes in all conditions. Of course the wheel / rim is exposed to all the surfaces the bike travels over, splatter and any debris in the air which reduces the braking effectiveness. For example riding my malvern star bmx through wet grass, gutters with low water levels with sand and gravel or full mud. The rim based braking systems were reduced. Making it fun as a kid, then when they dried. Omph! hard brakes and or emitting a squealing sound.
In comparison, a disc brake is only exposed to the atmospheric (air) conditions and some of the material spattered up or in the air from vehicles in front. Due to their centre of the wheel position.
Never had any disc brake lock up, riding sports bikes over the years.
The mention of disc brakes locking up on internet video sites, is the sign of poor quality product and crap components.
Or neglecting bike maintenance. People who did not read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. We won the war(s), we went to school. But we can not invent the self charging bike vehicle when all the components are out there.
Those round things, there are two on bikes, four on cars, etc. The turn and turn around when we ride the world. But if we do not get paid we do not care. These are xt level you can get xtr level which is the top of the range for shimano and they have new ones that are called freezer or something like that. the model is actuall RT-86 not RG-86. I have been using these on my bike for over a decade they work well. good price
Ah that explains why they were cheaper than aliexpress, I bought one model down from the xtrs. Oh well, will be enough for me I guess. Thank you, I didnt notice that. Updated the title
these are all you need. I've heard good things about the ones from aliexpress, but haven't seen any in real life.
Just be aware. These are 6 bolts to secure the disc to the wheel, but most newer bikes use the centrelock system to secure them to the wheel.
Not sure about mountain bikes, but road bikes with discs were from ~2015 through to about 2019 or so.
Just check your wheels before buying. Not sure if you can even get adapters for these. You can get adaptors to put six bolt rotors on centrelock hubs, but not the other way around.
No one uses 6 bolts these days
I been seeing disc brake locks up on social media lately :/
