175k QFF Points - Disappearing Shortly

Hey Ozb

We have 175k QFF points with ANZ Black cc

We intend to buy a new home shortly and will need to close the CC. I assume in this case, the points will be removed/deleted/forfeited.

Is there anything I can do with them? We have no more Annual leave left for the year so don't expect to travel.

We may be able to purchase leave… however to make our annual leave : Holiday time ratio worth it, we often like to travel only over public holiday periods e.g. Easter/Xmas

But at these times it appears the classic reward flights (most bang for buck spend of QFF), are often not available

Any tips on how to use up the points?

Thanks

If the points are in your Qantas account then they don't expire, unless after 12 months your points balance has not changed.

  • Don’t you continue to accrue ARL during the year?

Personally, I would transfer it to the reward program of the airline you think you will use the most or travel next (and avoid our domestic airlines, Qantas/Virgin). The reason being you'll always be competing with the FIFO workers for reward seats. It's the same for school holidays etc when everyone's trying to book tickets.

Where possible, I would go for the "home airline" of the country you think you're going to fly to (or your own country) so that there's less competition for reward seats when you want it. Other countries have different holidays etc so it is less likely to clash with the aussie holiday season.

Note the expiry date and the conversion rates or relative value, etc though.

anz black rewards cant transfer the points to qantas

so this must be a qantas ff black card, and they transfer automatically at end of a statement period

competing with the FIFO workers for reward seats

wrong, you are competing against the whole of Australia and all the other one world partners who also have qantas reward seats available on their websites. School holidays has to be the worst time to get a reward / cheap flight and when qantas has low key devalued and removed classic reward availability and pushed them onto the new scam called "classic plus", well your in for a bad time

This is really good advice which I had never considered - thanks for sharing!

If the points have already transferred to Qantas then you won’t lose them when you close the card.

Qantas points are lost if there’s 18 months of inactivity with the Qantas account. As long as you earn or use points within 18 months they’ll remain in your account.

You can earn small amounts of points via the Qantas wellbeing app.

Thanks for sharing this, Good tip.

Yup. We use that everyday to trickle feed in points. Also the Woolworths everyday account.

yeah, yet another reason FF programs are just scams nowadays.

I've always managed to find good deals for both domestic and international.

To ensure they don't expire, use the Qantas Wellbeing app: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/864784

We’ve done pretty good out of the FF points. Last year on our trip back from Europe with QANTAS FF points we did Vienna to Dubai (economy), Dubai to Sydney (First/Business). This included both of us spending 15 hours in the first class lounge in Dubai.

You have to be prepared to look at all the options and be very flexible with dates. We did Virgin Velocity across Business in QSuites. To get the Qantas flight back we ended by 50 plus days travelling in Europe.

You certainly won’t do well if you have a family or a strict timetable.

    • Out of curiosity, how much taxes&surcharges did you pay on "Dubai to Sydney (First/Business)" and "Business in QSuites" legs?

      • +2

The First/Business was roughly $2K each.

The Qsuites was roughly $600 each.

Not cheap but bargains for the experience.

        • How did you get 15hrs in the lounge?

Surprised they let you in so early - sounds amazing!

@movieman: We flew in on an overnighter from Vienna that got in early morning. We flew out late that night. I was a bit concerned they wouldn’t let us in but, because I had a first class ticket rather than buying access, they didn’t bay an eyelid. Long enough for three meals, a bit of a nap and a couple of showers. The downside is they don’t have storage cupboards so you have to carry your carry on with you. If you do it then go to Concourse A. We actually left from Concourse B so went there just before we took off, frankly it wasn’t very good.

It was just completely bonkers. We were outnumbered by the staff. The food and drink was amazing. The showers are very lux.

We did the First/Business because we couldn’t get two First or two business on the same plane. This is now our holy grail for travel.

  • What do you mean they expire?

    • I think they think that the card is connected to the actual QFF points.

  • The OP referred specifically to QFF.

If they were expiring, it would not be because of CC closure, many OzB's have churned countless cards and accumulated points.

If it is truly expiring from passage, a simple transaction like the Qantas Health App would reset the timer.

You're points don't expire - they've already been transferred to QFF so it's in their system, you get 18months of inactivity before they expire.

You can cancel your card whenever you want.

  • OP, your points will last for 18 months after you close your CC. During that time, there are many ways to get QF points from shopping at WW, pump or buy a coffee at BP, use the Qantas Wellbeing app. The 18-months expiration reset each time your points balance changed.

  • Thanks everyone for your input.
