What is stopping them at 25?

It's a pretty good case for Age Discrimination.
      Part 4 Division 1 Item D https://www.legislation.gov.au/C2004A01302/latest/text

      • Thank you for letting me know.

AEVA is a voluntary body is it not?

Excerpt from Part 4 Division 2:

          36 Voluntary bodies

          (1) This Part does not make it unlawful for a voluntary body to discriminate against a person, on the ground of the person’s age, in connection with:

          (a) the admission of persons as members of the body; or

          (b) the provision of benefits, facilities or services to members of the body.

    • We are having trouble getting the youth involved and we love for them to join, we have a lot of older members so we love to get some young people involved where possible, thank you for asking. It would be great to get ideas from them as well and we can share ideas as well.

You'd probably find younger people don't care for EVs because they cost more than an average ICE and they aren't in a position to take up the benefits of EVs. For example, they don't own a home, so won't have solar panels or home battery options (probably). They also wouldn't be in a position to get a car on NL for the FBT exemptions, unless they're on a higher than average salary than what their peers would be on. I don't have a solution but what you're doing can't be bad.

        • Yeah agreed but just give them an opportunity to join if they like to know more but great point there, you can get some budget EV and great FBT exemptions for them too.

          • @cr12330: A BYD Dolphin Essential? Still $30k. When I was 22, I was driving a 2001 corolla that I bought for $4,000. Kids were financing brand new cars and struggling to pay for uni textbooks.

@bbqandbargains: Yes but you don't have to buy a brand new vehicle, there Mitsubishi i-miev and Nissan Leaf first generations that still have great range on the 2nd hand market and gets you around the city where you require too, still save on fuel and can plug it at home on a general power point.

              • +1

@cr12330: There is one i-Miev for sale in all of Australia on Carsales.

Sensible advice to first time/young driver should be focused on buying the safest car for the money over platitudes about 'feel good' EVs. First gen Nissan Leaf lacks many modern safety features so as a safety features per $ proposition is pretty bad.

              • @cr12330: I don't want to be a naysayer (I own an Atto3 and fully support the EV movement), but good luck finding an i-miev for sale :-)
And it's a bit hard to justify an old Leaf for $15k with the battery issues they have.

The reality is that we are still a few years away from cheap 2nd hand EV's where the battery will last the lifetime of the car itself. The current crop of decent battery EV's (BYD, MG etc) are all still too new to be considered a budget buy for a younger person.

Some Atto's are down around low $30k and represent exceptional value given they are essentially still a new car even after 2+ years - but that is still $30k for a car.
Maybe those MG4's that were reduced to low $30k's new a few months ago will get down to the low $20k's in a couple of years and the same for the current Dolphin Essential - but that is still at least 2 years away (maybe more).

And at some point people are going to start to realise that a 3-5 year old EV is pretty much as good as a new one (mechanically) and they might actually start holding their value better and not depreciating so rapidly like their ICE equivalents.

Again, don't get me wrong - I'm in full support of EV's going forward, but your struggle to get young people interested will probably continue regardless of free membership to AEVA.
Until such point as they can see themselves actually owning one anyway….. :-)

                • @clintdb: Yes, appreciate you highlighting you details, just trying to say there option is tho cheaper EV, some people are selling the Nissan Leaf now under $8K now. There some other great deals on EV with only being 2 to 5 years old in MG ZS EV and Hyundai Ioniq 28 and 38kW range going under $20 these days are well and still having both manufacture and battery warranties too. You don't have to own an EV and join you can be interest in the is space and learn from our members as well and come to our meeting in your State and Territory so we love to put on a few social events where you are from.

        • You can get a used Ioniq for high teens $ to high $20k's. So not expensive to buy or run. I'd guess not to insure or repair.

      • Younger people are less inclined to have drivers licences. It's probably a bit 'meh' to them.

        • Yes that true but just trying to get them into electric vehicle, it can be anything electric not only cars tho.

  • Why would someone join this?
Do ICE vehicle drivers have an equivalent club?

    • If people are into electric vehicle and want to join a club and learn more from that, great, yes there are ICE vehicles clubs out there too.

Upvote just because OP is so diligent in answering queries, even though I don't think this initiative will help with EV adoption among younger cohort (for reasons some others already explained).

    • +1

Thank you, one thing I forgot to mention is it does not have to be a car that people have to get into, can be anything electric which can be on wheels or other means too.

  • Literal decades? Are there decades that aren't literal?

    • Yeah been operating since 1973.
