backorder so you will have to wait for delivery, but almost clearance level price for this recently released Onyx Studio 9 (2025) model.

the cheapest for Onyx Studio 8 was $250 ($211 with TGG commercial member) in 2024 and it was released in 2023.

they say this speaker has deeper bass than others similar in size, but the downside is it doesn't get very loud. made for indoors not outdoors because of the volume level.

    doesn't get very loud

90 dB isn't loud enough? True, how can I hear my tunes as I sit next to a busy freeway…

    • just read feeback on onyx series. most complain it doesn't get as loud but has better bass compared to similar JBL etc.

btw some of the spec is with it plugged in only. such as 50W you probably get about 30W on battery.

I can almost guarantee that no other portable speaker at that size can do more than 90 dB @ 1m without absurd distortion and dynamic compression.

        You'd need something larger.

        • just read feedback it's a common complaint of Onyx. probably gets only 60-70dB's on battery.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: The key thing that separates it out from most of the pack is the high treble isn't exaggerated, so these people are probably deaf or using it in a very noisy environment.

loudness is a common complaint in the bluetooth speaker community. "doesn't get loud enough" which is more important than "no bass".

that's why UE speakers just maximise loudness by cutting all the bass, they sound terrible at max volume but a lot of users are happy with that because "everyone on the train can hear it".

@n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Yeah I can understand a mid-centric approach for a handheld unit that people want to cut through conversation or to push out basic tracks or podcasts.

This is a full range speaker configuration in the smallest possible config with dynamic drivers to replicate something like bookshelf speaker listening. It's really good value at $200 if you care about the quality of the audio without getting silly on price.

                • @jasswolf: yes I agree all of Harman models are good sounding speakers. including the smaller Luna ($137 on sale rn doesn't look too good next to Onyx 9 for $201 though 😂) and Go Play 3.

the only downside to all these speakers is they all have tiny batteries inside. the Onyx uses just 1x almost AA sized lithium battery, their battery life is really not great when you play loud.

I read a couple times Onyx 7 at max volume on battery will run out in 1 hour. which is not bad for the size of the battery but not as much as the other major brands.
as I wrote in description, really is designed to be more indoor than outdoor. I think even a lot of buyers will just leave it plugged in as a home speaker.

I had the first few versions of this and have loved them. The feet would break (3D print new ones), the micro USB ports needed replacing a few times, but they were great speakers. I would have jumped on this if I hadn't missed the deal

yeah I think the Onyx 5, 6 that looked like a bag was a good design with a easy handle that was easy to hold on to.

the Onyx 7, 8 ended up looking like a planet with a ring, and it took up more space like 30cm x 25cm square so it made it less shelf friendly.

the 9 goes back to a slimmer design, looks like 30cm x 15cm square of floor space. but the handle seems very small and shallow and can only be grabbed from the back. without considering any difference in sound I think the old ones had a better design.

the micro USB ports needed replacing a few times,

I found a picture of the ports, the Onyx 9 has a USB-C port. but looks like that's for power bank output only? I thought you charged the Onyx range with the small AC cable.

      • Yes you're right of course it was the DC port that needed replacing, not the frustratingly useless micro-USB port!

        • +1

you mean AC port? that's not good. maybe the AC port is not made for constant plugging unplugging like USB.

Yes, I have an early one that was to be 'disposed of'. Still works fine, but was dropped.
I had it outside, and the surface was 'tacky'.
      Cleaned it up.
But I just purchased the Black one. TY OP, as I was looking at getting a new one.
Harman BTW is Samsung (as is JBL)

      • yeah I think mod added it for me in black big text after each color's links.

one was temp out of stock, but both were able to be added to cart at time of posting.

  • both colours are back as "Temporarily Out of stock" but both can be added to cart again.

  • $201 for a brand new Onyx 9 is nuts.
Out of stock, but able to order. Fingers crosseit gets delivered.

    • I checked since the Temporarily out of stock update comment right above.

one of them the White one I think changed to "Usualy dispatch in 1 to 2 months" a few days ago, which I think is more guaranteed than Temp out of stock.
