[VIC, SA] 12-Month Gym Membership $148 Upfront or $5.95/Week Direct Debit, No Establishment Fee @ Derrimut 24:7 Gym

1110

Australia's impossibly cheapest (sometimes 24/7) gym just got impossibly cheaper. How or why they can do this is a mystery to you as it is to me.

I go to the Frankston one, it's never too busy and I like it there. However its still not back to 24/7, even though all the key fob hardware seems to be installed. Take caution on if your closest gym is one affected by "temporary" restricted trading hours if that would affect your workout.

edit: for those interested, frankston is finally transitioning over to the fob system this week and will return to 24/7, albeit with reduced staffed hours.

Wish I had one near me

While the price is amazing no other gym comes close to the price, they are very over crowded and no parking sucks.

      • Which one?

        • +1

Caroline Springs, Airport West and Port Melbourne

          • @willy000: Dam CS is the closest to me. How bad is it?

            • @rsop: Pretty…
But bunnings is next door for parking, its more… finding a machine.

            • +2

@rsop: After 3pm its like the boxing day sales at Myer.

Pay $5 for a day pass and check it out before joining.

      • +5

What exactly calls for these puke emojis lol

      • What's the reason?

        • +2

          Probably land value.

        • +12

Probably to not start a turf war with which ever mob dominates the gym market there

      • They just closed down in Qld ☠️

  • Wait a bit, It will be much cheaper!

  • +3

Available as a top up too it says. Wonder if it's worth topping up now or better to wait and see next year if they are even still in business…

    • +1

This is the running joke for years.

    • I already topped up half a year regrets they said i cant do it again aaaa this was a much better deal lol

  • -4

shutdown cashgrab - overly discussed in previous posts?

    • How? They did exact same prices last year and the year before

    • +7

Gets said everytime but still waiting for it to happen.

I do believe it will happen at some stage though.

      • Why? Planet Fitness runs sustainably at these prices too.

  • +7

Prob trying to get a quick membership boost before eofy and the amended anti money laundering laws kicking in next year…

    • They only accept electronic payment, how could they be laundering money through this gym.

        • I bet that would be easy to spot in an audit.

        • +2

Yeah great plan, now their taxable revenue has increased by $2000.

          • +3

@ferguson: That's the idea of money laundering though. You flush cash through the business that isn't business related, pay the tax, and suddenly it is legitimate, ie washed & cleaned, hence laundered

It's just a cost of doing business to legitimise the funds. With the tools at the Government's disposal including data sharing for asset purchases & comparison with tax returns lodged, it's going to be necessary to explain where funds came from. I'm not even sure the Government cares as long as it gets its cut

          • @ferguson: Its to clean the money, and yes pay tax, but then it becomes "legit"

        • Wouldn’t the easy way be to generate a whole heap of sales under names from the white pages and they never activate their membership? Why do all this bogus $2000 admin fee?

  • +3

    How do they make money?

    • +13

      Pack them like sardines

      • +2

It's not that packed. Heaps of machines and I always find one or more free.

        • Depends on where hey. If i go rush hour at my local one it is horrid. I would only recommend for those able to go outside of rush hour (before 9/after 4or5 is the usual rush hour). I typically go mid day which is not packed and nice

      • +1

        sardines in brine sweat

      • +15

If they're already so PACKED with people who are going, imagine all the people who signed up and are NOT going.

        That's where the money is.

        • +2

yup, 3 of my buddies refuse to go because of how packed it is.

    • +1

Most people don't go that often. Planet Fitness does the same. Anytime Fitness and the rest are just overcharging.

    • +2

      Drugs and organised crime

      • Yeah money laundering is the answer to this question most of the time imo.

    • Heaps of sign-ups, most people go once or twice and never again… don't cancel their membership as it's admitting failure to themselves.
Gym owners marketing 101 - sign up as many people as possible, especially in lower socio-economic areas, which Derrimut targets.

  • +4

Seems suss. Rumours of possible shutdown. My local had a toilet that was out of action for months. When I asked around, other Derrimut Gyms had maintenance issues too.

    I'd be cautious.

    • +8

They run these promos prices every year. They ran them last year, the year before and they year before that too. They make a lot of money from supplements, meals etc as well.

      • They've discontinued the meals I believe, at least a my local they definitely have.

        • +1

Yeah you could be right. Don't remember seeing them at mine lately either

    • +3

I train at the original Derrimut in Derrimut. Broken machines usually get fixed in two weeks time. I still see the Derrimut clean team everyday to vacuum and clean. Though no sign of Key fob system being installed.

    • Then there are the times the toilet should be closed but isn't. I don't know what suppliments are going through the bowels of some people there…

    • I'm assuming you mean APW. that's probably the most neglected one of them all.

I wouldn't think anything of it.

  • Shiiiiiii, this is a deal. Not sure if im gonna top up or not though.

  • +1

    $5.95 X 52 = $309.40

    That's a $161.40 premium if you don't have $148 today.

    Being poor is expensive :(

    • They do take Afterpay too.

    • The benefit though is that if you have concerns that they are going to close soon, you won't have outlaid money ahead of time.
$6 a week is so cheap though.
If you are lucky enough to live conveniently near by and are not a member yet, get your strides on!

    • -2

You make it sound difficult to save up $148.

  • +1

any news on when they will be restoring 24/7 access to those locations that with reduced hours atm? been saying 24/7 Swipe Access coming soon but there's been no news.

    • +3

I ask every 4 weeks and get told in 4 weeks.

There has been no changes to data cabling or equipment since the change from 24/7

      • If i knew that my local one was no longer gonna be 24/7, i wouldn't have renewed my membership. the weekend hours are crap and working a 9-5 during the weekday by the time i get home its only opened for another hour or 2 before its closed.

        • I thought that would be the worst of my problems with the gym.

Broken machinery, uncleaned toilets, mismanaged car parking.

  • ATL!?

  • Bearish Signal

    • Maybe, if you were trading this on the stock market I guess

    • Always is for gyms this time of year. Winter is coming and no one wants to leave their house in Victoria, SA and Tassie. Gyms always have sales this time of year

  • +3

"Herp derp they won't be around in a few months time"

    -. everyone since 2012

  • Don't do it guys, this place is about to go into Administration.

    • They had these exact prices last year and the year before that and the year before that. What's your source on them going into administration?

  • +9

    https://consumerrights.wiki/index.php?title=Derrimut_Gym_rev…

In late February 2025, Derrimut notified members that effective March 3, 2025, several gym locations would no longer operate 24/7. The new hours would be limited to 6am-10pm on weekdays and 8am-5pm on weekends.[3]

    This change was announced:

    Just 6 days before implementation
Approximately 5 days after their "cheapest sale ever" ended
Without offering automatic refunds or compensation for reduced service

Affected locations included multiple gyms across Adelaide, including Melrose Park, Port Adelaide, Seaford Meadows, Smithfield, Rundle Mall, and Welland, as well as locations in other states.

Following member backlash, Derrimut sent follow-up emails stating they would transition to key fob access systems within 2-4 weeks that would restore 24/7 access.

    Take that as you will.

    • -4

Some of those gyms already have key fob and camera systems being installed. They do these same prices every year.

    • +2

They don't even inform/refund when they close down, the reason they can do cheap and no one bothers to chase.

  • Best bang for buck gym in the world. I've been going there for 10 years now. Too many Ozhaters in this chat! to get these facilities, At another gym, it'd be $850 a year membership.

  • According to their site, deal ends 5th of May.

  • This deal is crazy good. Just extended my existing membership by 12 months.

Terms stipulate that you need to go into the store within 7 days of purchase to extend your membership so remember this.

Any refund incurs a $49 fee

  • People have been saying it's a cash grab to close down since 2013, not defending the owners since they are suss but yeah, still hasn't happened

    • Their marketing is to sign up maximum patrons, most of whom never go anyway.. if not once or twice.
It's known in the gym owner's world, you just need sign-ups. Even though Derrimut looks crowded, it's NOTHING compared with how many are actually members.
People don't like cancelling because they're giving in to their unhealthy, lazy reality.

      • Their marketing is to sign up maximum patrons, most of whom never go anyway.. if not once or twice.

        That's every gym.

        • True. Derrimut goes for large scale though. I don't blame them, people in general are lazy af.

  • Good luck getting a car park or finding a machine/weight that is free

  • +1

warning bells ringing. Our local Gym went under twice with different owners in the last 5 years. Both times was after a big marketing push with super cheap memberships and both times I got sucked it. Ive now just bought a few bits and pieces for home use

    • Ive now just bought a few bits and pieces for home use

This is the way to go IMO. Many people here are saying "it'll be okay" and "24:7 do this all the time bro", but if a fence sitter the new FY will be interesting.

  • How does the top up work? My partner goes and signed up November or around about there.

Is the top up a 12month extension on top of the current contract? Or you lock in extra months after the last contract for $149? Or $149 minus amount of weeks of cross over?

(I.e. does it make sense to buy the top up now or just wait for black Friday sale as the old contract is about to go out the window?)

Seems quite black box so anyone with experience lmk!
    Cheers

    • It'll be on top of the current contract, so add an additional 12 months to your current expiry.

      • That's kinda insane, I'll update my partner asap

  • +1

I’ve been a member since 2020 and mainly use their gym in Airport West. However, I’ve noticed a significant decline in maintenance. Many machines have been out of order for the last 12 months or more. Less than a 1/3 of the treadmill actually work.
Free weights section is somewhat acceptable, especially at that price point!

  • -1

go to the Derrimut in Oakleigh in Melbourne, its pretty good for a gym in the west, lots of equipment free weight and machines. Good bargain at this price.

    • +1

Oakleigh is not in the west

    • There’s over 10k members and no parking.

  • +1

    Extended until May 12.

  • +1

at $3/week, its great just for the showers if you're homeless/living in your car in this economy!
