  • Pretty good price, think its been more than a year since it's under $900

Wild that $899 is “good price” for Lego.

      • +12

Everyone knows lego is overpriced, but it has 7,541 pieces and it's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs :p

Everyone knows lego is overpriced, but it has 7,541 pieces

doubt it cost lego that much money to make 7541 pieces

Lego knows that they essentially got no competition so they can charge this much money
and the fans will keep buying it.

@pinkybrain: I’ve read people on here claim the RnD is what drives up the price. Like little plastic cubes require the same research and development as a new smart phone or GPU 🤣

Least you know it’s a rip off that you’re willing to accept because it brings you joy. That I understand 😊

            • @PainToad:

I’ve read people on here claim the RnD is what drives up the price.

I doubt RnD is that hard compared producing a CPU, motherboard, GPU etc..

They got real world models and movies to look at
and they got computers which help generate these models for them
which also generate the bricks that are needed..

Least you know it’s a rip off that you’re willing to accept because it brings you joy. That I understand 😊

the joy is experience while you build it… ie being in the flow
once done, it is just nice to look at but now you got to find somewhere to put it..
and then you will hardly look at it again…

And for some they need to go buy another set…

There is no replay or reuse value…
since no one wants to redo the set again and it can also be difficult to take it apart each piece

There's also stress / anxiety if you lose a piece and try to find where it dropped or if it is permanently lost.

          • @pinkybrain: Of course it didn’t, which business sells their products at cost price or below?

            • +2

@eccaz: Oh come on. Clearly the point they were making was that the margin is extremely high above the cost price. Not that they should be selling their products at cost price.

Lego fans are so easily triggered by any criticism - even from fellow fans.

              • +2

@PainToad: yeap, these parts are essentially just harden molded plastic with dye etc..

the total cost to make it and packed would not cost that high that justify the $899 (RRP $1299) price.

the fact that lego fans will to pay $899 (RRP $1299) price for 7,541 pieces of plastic is crazy….
there also no replay/reuse value… once built they just display it and done.

Lego fans will to pay $899 (RRP $1299) price for this is because
                1. they are fans
                2. they believe these expensive lego sets will go up in price, which do go up for rare or discontinued sets.
                3. Lego also intentionally makes rare and discontinue lego sets to boost the value of those lego sets which further justify them charging these high prices lego sets..

Lego fans are so easily triggered by any criticism - even from fellow fans.

yeah I am also a fan of building lego sets but no way do I think $899 (RRP $1299) is worth paying for 7,541 pieces of plastic…

rather use that money to buy something that I regularly use and reuse

Not saying companies should sell at cost price or below

but LEGO got a money printing machine here
when they can sell essentially 13.64 Kilograms of plastic for $899 (RRP $1299)
and people will still buy it

@pinkybrain: I mean it’s almost like Disney doesn’t let people sell Star Wars licensed stuff willy nilly without paying them a huge fee.

            • @zonra: But do Lego pay per piece to Disney?
I mean, it's the same branding as on the $20 battle pack. The cost of licensing shouldn't really effect the price on the bigger sets.

            • @zonra:

I mean it’s almost like Disney doesn’t let people sell Star Wars licensed stuff willy nilly without paying them a huge fee.

              well of course,,

this is there IP so they would want a cut of the pie… not gonna let LEGO profit from their IP for nothing
but LEGO charging $899 (RRP $1299) is just pure profiteering of their fans..

How much is that license fee cost out of that $899 (RRP $1299) price ?

          • @pinkybrain: which, by definition, makes it fair value

        • Well below the 10c per piece threshold, even at the 'bargain' price.

when Aliexpress can do this model for around $100 you underastand the massive gap is filled a little by nice packaging, a little by marketing, more by franchise licensing but mostly by clear profit!

        • Lego is one of those companies that 100% deserve to lose profits to counterfeits.

The Adobe of the toy industry.

@PainToad: i like lego. i like star wars.

but the prices for such sets is pure greed, which gouges the hardcore fans who actually give a franchise or brand its value.

            • @QuickToThePointless:

but the prices for such sets is pure greed, which gouges the hardcore fans who actually give a franchise or brand its value.

the really high price gouging also means it prevents others who enjoy building lego sets from being able to build these expensive sets
unless they got spare $899 (RRP $1299) to spend or their parents can afford to buy it for them (if they are a kid).

              • @pinkybrain: That's the part that pisses me off the most. Lego should predominately be a toy for kids to have fun with and help them develop their problem solving skills and hand eye coordination

Instead its turned into a way for middle aged millennials to piss away money on things they display on a shelf.

                Just like Pokemon cards.

I’d be very careful using Target gift cards to purchase this. Order cancellations will flow. Happens all the time to me.

    • Good point, the benefit with BigW cards is they convert the refund to a Wish card, that can be used for grocery shops at woolies at a higher rate than a Woolies card :)
I've never had a target GC order cancelled, so do you know if they refund back to a target, or a coles group card?

      • Nope, its a Target gift card and it takes AGES. I've had to follow it up many times.

Had a few BIG W gift card purchases refunded, gotta love the Woolies card in return :-)

  • Ooft. Missed out on the $813ish two years ago. Do I?

  • Someone is seeing a very large collection (including quite a bit of star wars) on marketplace in Canberra.

    Worth a look

    • Are you the someone?

      • Definitely not.
The wife would never let me have a collection this size as my 1 year old would have a ball pulling it all down.

I am not a trekkie and have no interest in building this into starship enterprise.

    • Is this where I tell you that there's rumours lego are releasing star trek Lego this year? One is rumoured to be the Enterprise-D.

  • They are great fun. Got few bigger builds. Started with Titanic. Yes, know lot of people saying expensive "plastic". This is around 14kg plastic. Buy your rolls and start printing it yourself. The cheap ali ones doesn't "click in" same way as LEGO. as we see it. Spend $ on a set to build together over next few weeks when kids gone to bed. Cannot put a price on that.
Fun fact. LEGO means " leg godt (Danish) play well"
