I'm personally not a fan of the the online battles. People are using similar cards and sets, so it's very tedious. I don't mind doing the CPU ones because at least there's a variety in cards used and I can build decks around that.
I prefer the card collecting aspect of the game. As a free to play game, I think there's enough content especially at how quickly they release new sets.
I did a few battles and got a bit bored of it. Now each night my two daughters pick a pack each and open them. It's good fun for us that way.
I couldnt give two poos about the battling, I just love opening packs and collecting the cards.
for future reference, you can say the word 'shit' (unless thats not your style, which i can respect.)
there is a new set every month since the start of the year pretty much. It's a little overwhelming as a f2p player trying to collect everything, but the game is fairly generous with how many hour glasses you can acquire from solo battles/achievements, monthly shop reset.
I'm completely f2p and have managed to collect pretty much everything (excluding all the secret rares - 1star, 2star, 3star, crown rares etc) from all of the sets (i did have to trade for a few diamond cards though). The trading system sucks, they introduced another resource that you have to get from dusting duplicate cards and the exchange rate really, really, really sucks. essentially you need to dust like 4x 4 diamond cards in order to trade for 1. You also can't trade your 2 star cards and above, so if you've got duplicates, you can only dust them for trade tokens. They did mention they will be revamping the trade system to use shinedust (which most players probably have a lot of because it's useless) because it got so much hate, but that's still yet to be seen..
collecting is fun, they introduced a rank game mode but there's not a huge amount of incentive (in terms of rewards) to grind and rank up. the meta is pretty annoying though, a lot of people running the same giratina/darkrai energy ramp/turtling deck which got annoying real fast. there's not yet any kind of rotation of sets yet, but I would imagine they would introduce something similar to hearthstone where there's wild mode and standard (certain recent sets only) because there's some pretty interesting combos.
You definitely need people to trade with as a f2p player - our friend group has set up a spreadsheet for rare and above for trading and it makes the process a lot easier

Battling in this game is pure RNG trash. I have it just to open packs.
The battling is definitely the least interesting part of the game. It feels heavily-RNG based and players often run the same decks. The solo event mode is less infuriating and gives more of a reason to mess around with your collection of cards.
The card pack openings is definitely a much better experience though. It's like a daily dopamine hit when you get a good card and without the diwnside of spending heavily on physical card packs.
I will say that (for the free player experience) they're releasing new sets at a faster rate than it takes to collect all of the base cards in each set. So there's a lot of missing cards to collect but the game also never feels void of content.

i was obsessed with it for the first few weeks till they released the next theme packs - but other than collecting for the fun of it, i felt battling randoms online was just a frustrating experiencing of getting smashed with op meta. Whereas with games like mtg arena, you can generally just netdeck say budget RDW meta deck with wild cards if necessary and have SOME possiblity of winning some games.
