Great find. I was going to buy, but the reviews aren’t great compared to other similar products. So I’d say buy with caution. There’s about 10% one star rating and 15% 2 and 3 star ratings which is quite high for a supposedly great brand.

Basically as a general rule if a product has a 5 star rating of below 70% I’d stay away from it. This is way too low for a product with such a high rrp.

There are many other products with ratings of 4.5 and higher.

Lastly, the issue with the low rating is product failure after fair use. Not great.

The manufacturer's website has a rating of 4.3 based on 305 reviews and Myer 4.6 from 115 reviews. Hard to know who to believe but for $29 with free return I'll take a punt.

Agreed. Also fair to surmise that expectations will be higher of a product with an RRP of $110 than the $10 grinders which are generously reviewed. I know from experience that the cheaper mills and grinders are good value, but that there's a reason they cost cents in the dollar. And I'd happily give them a 4 or 5 star rating even if they only last me a year or two, but worked and looked funky for that time.

For under $30, I'm reasonably confident these are worth the roll of the dice and couldn't be much worse than similarly priced Chinese knock offs…

    • The five most recent reviews are one star reviews. Has JJ turned to enshitification?

Bought these about a year ago. Look great. Don't work great at all. Went to the Ikea IHÄRDIG ones which don't look as nice, but are functionally perfect.

The quest for a reliable, good looking & reasonably inexpensive milling set continues.

I use an aliexpress coffee grinder and its the bomb

      • Depends on how you define good looking and inexpensive, but I like the Peugeot u'Select ones because of the steel burrs, and I like the classic wood design.

I've been using these for a couple of years. They've been perfectly fine. Good thing is they don't leave a load of salt and pepper on the table / in the cupboard. Also well priced enough that if one does break they are cost-effective enough to replace. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/114579295598

edit It is the larger size I have

        • +1

I had a version of the larger size until I didn't (thank you 22 month old). Not as robust as I thought they'd be.

I bought a pair of these one year ago, still going strong. https://www.amazon.com.au/Rechargeable-Automatic-Adjustable-…
USB C recharging, battery lasts about 2 months per recharge. They cop a absolute flogging in our house, especially the salt. They feel premium. Recommended.

Cheers for the link, definitely a premium offering.

i have these. theyre ok. the salt does clump in the spout up top

    • Sounds like $29 is about the rice price then!

  • Not as good as it looks :( Great find though

  • Most of the good grinders have a clear glass or acrylic body or window. For good reason.

I have these too. Salt clumps as previously mentioned and the silver cap broke off the other. Still works, but doesn't look as good. It’s a small piece of plastic that the cap screws into seems flimsy. The ikea 365+ ones are $5 and have lasted way longer..

  • Is there a difference in the quality of the milled peppercorn between cheap and expensive products?

    • +1

It depends on who made it, and what the burr is.

      I'd be suss on this.

But I would spend for a Peugeot because I'm so sick of every other proper grinder I've tried.

For something I use multiple times a day, why not make that thing pleasant?

      • what I meant to ask is if I mill the same peppercorn with a Peugeot vs a cheaper mill. What can I expect to be the difference in the outcome.

I know some mills have a setting for coarse/fineness, is this and the accuracy of the setting the key to achieving pepper flake success? Or is there some other factor I am missing?

        • I think you've got it - the accuracy, mostly.

Here's the Wire Cutter review on pepper mills https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-pepper-mill/ - but, take it with a grain of salt 😉

Other reviews have three "Pepper Cannon" as the top pick, but it costs an eye watering amount of money. Built like a tank, grinds A LOT of pepper very quickly. But… That's a lot of cash.

There are cheaper ones that are hard to get here, like the Unicorn.

I just know that I've bought cheaper pepper grinders in the last, and have found using them frustrating.

I will continue searching for the Peugeot's in op shops or during Amazon sales.

There are lots of reviews out there (have a Google and a read!), but all I know for certain is that you probably wouldn't buy the pepper grinder in this deal

    Showing up as $59 now

  • +1

Price has gone up to $59

  • Am I the only one that got a good set of these? I haven't really had any of the other issues mentioned here.

    • When did you buy them? I have an older set which are great and a newer set which is absolutely crap. I think they’ve started to cheap out on the manufacturing.

  • I got these from catch last year and absolutely hate them, they’re terrible. Do not buy.

  • these aren't good at all, salt clumps and ended up breaking within a year. bought the oxo ones and they have been much better!

  • They are OK. The bottom lid where you put the salt and pepper broke on my unit after a year or two and i had to put a small screw in it and now its fine and still going strong
