Recycling Company Planet Ark Enters Voluntary Administration

ADABEA, unfortunately this time it’s Planet Ark, one of the institutions meant to be managing Australia’s national recycling strategy.

The Board of Planet Ark Environmental Foundation has taken the decision to place the organisation into voluntary administration, a decision made following a review of the organisation’s financial position and future viability.

Established in 1992, Planet Ark has proudly worked for decades to inspire Australians to live more sustainably through a range of well-known environmental campaigns and programs including National Tree Day and National Recycling Week. Despite the dedication to this work by our team, the impact of COVID-19 on stakeholder support, current economic climate and ongoing funding challenges have significantly impacted our operations.

Voluntary administration provides an opportunity for an independent assessment of the organisation’s affairs and to explore potential options for restructuring that will allow the organisation to continue our important work.

As we work with the Voluntary Administrators, Michael Jones and Bruce Gleeson from Jones Partners Insolvency & Restructuring, our priority is to support our valued staff, partners, and stakeholders as we navigate this transition.

We are deeply grateful for the support of the Australian public, corporate and government partners, and the many schools and communities who have engaged with our work over more than three decades. We recognise the importance of the environmental mission we continue to pursue every day and sincerely believe that Planet Ark’s contribution to that mission will continue with renewed strength beyond this process.

Further updates will be provided as the administration progresses.

Govts have made recycling a shit fest. And a trough for opportunists. Orgs like PA have Buckleys. Sooner (more likely) than later the landfill monster is going to kick our collective arses.

Because Australia has a shortage of big gaping holes in the ground? I spot an opportunity here for Gina and Clive.

      • Perhaps they can get the locals to pick them up a few snacks, and also run Ginas moo moos at the same time

This is a shame. Their focus was on a genuine environmental issue that needs to be solved. But all the 'environmental' focus is on the shiny sexy money-making thing instead.

Did Planet Ark actually run any recycling programs themselves? I always thought they were mostly awareness and organising programs, and that others did the actual recycling.

Still, sad to see them go. The lack of organisation in the space sucks, mostly it's still handled by local councils who don't really work together. A handful of programs make it to state level but there's no proper commitment of funds and legislation to make any kind of real change. That said, Australia is pretty good compared to the countries where waste management is "drag it down the end of the street and burn it" or just dump it in the nearest body of water.

Tupperware also officially entered liquidation earlier this year too, lots of companies going under these days:

On 5 March 2025, TUPPERWARE AUSTRALIA PTY. LTD. (the Company) was placed into creditors voluntary liquidation. Ivan Glavas and Matthew Kucianski of Worrells were appointed as Liquidators for the purpose of winding up the Company.

Our initial role will be to collect the books and records of the Company and to realise any assets remaining in the Company as at the date of Liquidation. Creditors will be kept informed of any material updates in respect to this file in due course. A report to creditors is expected to be issued within the next three months.

    • We can expect a lot more of this over the next 3 years.

Hopefully Planet Ark won't just be shut down, they'll be sold as still having some value. That is, recycled.

  • So sad, they were doing a good job…Recycling and reducing wastage in this country is a joke.

While I always look at products using recycled materials and am willing to pay a small fee for them, I'm no doubt pay of a very tiny minority of the global population that does.
Unfortunately, there's not much money to be made in recycling most materials. The only solution is to make manufacturers responsible for the end of life of their products.

It's the same with the Made in USA crap, next to no American is going to willing buy local if the price is higher than imports.

The management need to learn to adapt in order to survive 2025 and beyond.
