How much money have you made from OzBargain?

Just a general question, how much have you made so far from Ozbargain (nowhere else, just Ozbargain) by acting quickly up on cheap deals/pricing errors and then reselling the goods?

Made? You must be kidding. I'm spending more. :)

  • +14

Made enough to buy the current bargain on the Rolls Royce Phantom Series II.

  • +2

Not really made any money. I make a bit from selling competition prizes and surveys more than anything. But sure do appreciate all the great bargains that pop up here!

I think that is against the spirit of OzBargain personally.

I know it is up to the user what they do with the items they purchase, but I'm sure most of the people who put deals on here do it to help fellow users get bargains for things they need - not to turn a profit. Especially not buying multiple items with the intent to resell, meaning others miss out.

I may get flamed for this, I just think using OzBargain for profit is wrong.

    • +2

Definitely savings over profit. It's not fair if people "Ozbargain" a specific item and make it unavailable for others, and then sell it on for inflated prices.

  • The only thing I have made money from was the star wars Xbox. bought it from hn, couldn't decide whether or not I wanted to play with it, decided after 3 months I didn't want it, made a few hundred profit.

I have bought plenty of items here, and as my wife always tells me… " getting something on sale is just a roundabout way of saving, because I was gong to buy it anyway."

  • +5

None. I have saved a lots for myself and friends, but never made any money.

  • +7

    Is that you broden?

    • +1

      No, it's that fly, again.

  • +10

Zero. I buy products for myself and not to resell them on eBay.

The only bargain that has actually made me money is ING's 5% PayWave offer. So far I have saved over $100 by buying the things I would normally buy at the shops I usually shop at. That's a "true" saving.

  • +3

Like above there is nothing the site can do about it but you really shouldn't be using this as a bargains to resell site. Particularly on the deals which are likely to run low on stock. Robs the other Oz Bargainers of the chance to get in on the action!

I think the title should be changed to how much $$ you save from Ozbargain? And it is complicated as at times, we will buy un-needed items because it is a good bargain, too good to let go, so we are not really saving $$ in these scenarios but actually spend more. :)

    • +1

But then the title will contradict with what the OP wants to know, that is on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being Broden how Broden you are.

  • +1

I think I'm pretty much a 0 on the 0-10 Broden scale. I can't recall ever buying something I saw on OzBargain with the express intent to sell it on. I will sell impulse or poorly thought through purchases if I find I don't use them or like them or whatever, but can't remember ever making any money. But then again, I'm not hardcore enough to go after the crazy crazy bargains like those mega cheap phones that people lined up for days for.

  • Few $100's opening ING Bank accounts for all the family.
Spent more than that on OZBargains - like $100 flights to KL for the family.

PS. Thanks ING for our holiday last year
(and their VISA debit cards came in handy there too - ING's, not the family's)

It is possible to make money without Brodening or onselling. Take for example the ING paywave 5% discount or the Wish gift card 5% off offers. Depending on how much you spend, that 5% can turn into a bit of an earner.

  • Based on these replies I think the members that post are the 'spirited' ozbargainers. Unfortunately often when there's a deal going on there are people looking to resell, such as a couple of weeks ago there was a childrens video camera reduced from $120 to $20 at David Jones, and when I asked about them the staff member said someone came in and bought all four of them.

It would be interesting to hear from these kinds of ozbargainers to see how much money they're making by visiting this site.

I haven't bought anything to on sell , for me it's all about the thrill of a bargain. Ozbargain has saved me a lot of money but I have also bought a lot of things I probably wouldn't have if I hadn't seen them here. My husband would probably like it if I stopped saving us so much money. Don't worry I'll sweeten him up with a trip to the movies ($5 each on the optus bonus kids tickets) and our jacobs creek mystery flights.
I might , however, sell my harvey Norman 60 cent epilator after using it I can see why they have to give all your money back. Pure torture.

  • I guess I have made a little now that a few things have paid out, like the ING refer a friend thing, and mebank free $50. I think I've made about $300 from those bank competitions. No idea how much i've spent, but it must be around breaking even.

Remember those ultra thin keyboard things from logitech and flingshot? I think the final price was $35 from logitech and $40 from flingshot or something like that? I bought two of them and sold them on eBay. But i wasn't the only one with that idea! In the end i think i sold them for $70 each had to keep price dropping! After ebay fees and postage ($13 and $15 each! in a flat envelope..i should of used a prepaid satchel) i think i made $10 each in the end haha. Not worth my time in the end really. That's the only time i've ever set out to profit from ozbargain and it didn't turn out well and haven't done it since.

  • I think I have saved money by taking the advice from people who have posted about shonky deals..mind you I have also had some great little freebies …face creams ..and also a postcard which has seeds mixed into the cardboard from LaZuppa ..But I so check the General Discussion page each day ..You just need to see the poor person who is being messed around by Scoopon needless to say there have been many complaints about them and this is just another reminder not to use them .

    Money made from reselling- Zero.
Money made from bank deals like ING refer a friend & 5% pay wave = about $400.
Money saved- At least a $1000
Money spent on thing i wouldn't have bought otherwise- probably $400 to $500 but i don't regret it at all.
Ozbargain has improved my life a lot…..Thanks Scotty for this awesome site

I estimate that I spend around $5000/year as a direct result of frequenting OzBargain.

Things I purchased in 2012 include but not limited to:

2x Canon DSLR from JB Hifi (sold my old 400D as a result)
Canon 50mm F1.8 from Kogan (sold for a small profit, like $30)
Canon DSLR Lens 24-105 IS Lens from Kogan
Sony NEX N5 Digital Camera (keeper)
    Sony E-Reader (selling now)
Optus MyTab (sold and made a small profit)
Toshiba Tablet (sold and made a small loss)
    Samsung Galaxy 7.7 (keeper)
    Samsung SSD HDD from MSY
    Asus laptop from OnlineComputers
Philips HiFi system from DSE and later sold for the same price (originally intended for my folks but they don't really want it)
various Wines from WineMarket, Grays, etc. (sometimes split among friends and work colleagues)

    • how could I forget the country road and rebel sports amex cashback deals

CR - spent about $175 (bought some tea towels, a robe for the gf, and a t-shirt which was already on sale for myself)
Rebel - bought a Russel jacket with hood and earphones.

and of course TheHut - still waiting on a couple of t-shirts, the Everlast jacket has arrived though.

Mainly found the banking/credit card deals and freebies really good.

Indeed saved some dollars but ending up buying something else for NO REASON except it was cheap. Being a banker had to say - a very bad investment as I do spend time on Oz site daily - and if the adage is true" time is money" then I am wasting time a lot….but I love this site and love the ozbargainers………..

  • Few hundred from an affilate link, to answer. I would, though, ask a question "how much money OzBargain made from you"? I estimate around few grand from my link, around $8400 if one to apply a general 4% conversion rate.

    • I know that OzBargain makes money but i don't understand how they do it?.

      • from affiliate links and ads they run on the website. oz bargain is a high traffic website and online ad companies like google's AdSense pay for ad impressions. if the ad link is clicked on and converts to sale the profit is even more.

You are not going to get an honest response or any response from those that do, especially if there is no way to remain anonymous. It's like asking who has a criminal record. You will only hear from those that don't, not the ones that do.

    • Indeed. Real broden is not going to stand out and say how much money he made from reselling cheap deals spotted on ozbargain. We've actually discussed this a month and half ago, but mainly on the morality of reselling rather than how much people have made.

  • +2

I SPENT a massive amount of money the first year. I've learned since which deals pop up frequently and which to just jump on.

… That being said, I'm sitting here with 6 pairs of headphones on my desk.

  • not real made money from here. spent alot got a few box of wine cheep and few other thing are cheep.

  • +3

    I haven't made money, I just spent less :)

  • i bought 2 of these dse scanners for $20 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/8390 could not hear anything interesting in adelaide so i put them on ebay they sold for $120 each both to rural queensland they must use them during cyclone or flood or somthing pretty good profit though although not in the spirit of ozbargain i know but you asked also the misses bought some clearence items from 2xu that did not fit made a pretty good profit on them to

  • In order to make money from OZB, you need to buy bargains posted on OZB, and then sell them above the prices you bought them for. I am uncomfortable doing that (not to mention too time consuming).

I don't make money from OZB because (1) I tend to use the items before I sell them (they become second hand) and (2) Once they become second hand items, they lose value rapidly (and even if I could sell them to make a tiny bit of profit, I prefer to sell them below cost).

I see OZB as a good way to reduce losses. However, some OZB deals tend to be too attractive so I ended up buying stuff I don't need too often.

  • I don't think anybody could make a career out of it, that's for sure - it would have to be opportunistic at best, hence I can't imagine anybody making thousands of dollars. Hundreds, maybe.
