[iOS] F1TV Monthly Subscription Pro INR299 (~A$5.49), Premium INR455 (~A$8.36) @ F1TV (India VPN and Apple ID Required)

250

This post is majority a copy-pasta from here but it still works (using India instead of Turkey).

In my experience you need a VPN to both subscribe and view content. This differs to what is outlined in the above link from which I copied this deal, where it was suggested you do not need the VPN to view content.

I have only tested this deal with a monthly subscription. I assumed annual would work too and it does (confirmed here)

Instructions below:

On PC or Mac:

  1. Activate VPN for India (I use NordVPN).
  2. In a browser, create new Apple ID for India App Store at http://appleid.apple.com/ using random Indian street address. I used my regular Australian mobile
number (not Indian) for the verification. Note that this step can have issues. Try different browsers, devices, incognito windows, with/without VPN. It's not clear why the account sign up sometimes fails. You are able to use the same mobile number across multiple apple accounts (I have 3 with the same number).
  3. Activate VPN for India (if you disabled it in the previous step). In a browser, make a new F1TV account at https://f1tv.formula1.com.
For both I use [email protected] to make the account (where my usual email address is [email protected]) to avoid having to setup a new
email account. GMail ignores everything after a “+”, and it works fine for logging in.
  4. Buy iTunes gift cards. I purchased one from Eneba, but found you can get them from Amazon India which avoids the usual drip pricing and fees as you would get from the usual CD key resellers. I bought multiple gift cards from the PineLabs seller. Delivered within 5 minutes. Note their feedback is questionable, so buy at your own risk I suppose. I had no issues.

On iPhone:

  1. Activate VPN for India (I use NordVPN).
  2. Delete existing F1TV app. Go to App Store, log out, and log into your “India” account, download F1TV app.
  3. Add your new gift card(s) to your account. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201209
  4. Subscribe, in the F1TV app (it will use your gift cards, and not ask for any credit card).

Finally, to watch on your device:

  1. Activate VPN for United States, or any country where the F1TV subscription you purchased is available. I use the NordVPN app on my Nvidia Shield.
  2. Open / install F1TV app. Log out if required, and log into your “India account”.
  3. Watch away.

Important Notes (my own learnings):

  • Avoid upgrading your subscription. I stupidly purchased the Access pass initially, then upgraded to Pro, and finally to Premium. I was under the impression the upgrades would get pro-rated. No, seems I threw away the earlier 239INR and 299INR subscriptions.
  • 4K UHD device support is extremely limited (Apple TV and Roku).
  • The Access tier only allows replays, however for most countries replays seem to be delayed by 48 hours.

Subscription Tier Pricing

Tier Key Points Monthly INR Monthly AUD Yearly INR Yearly AUD
Access Delayed replays only (seems to be after 48 hours for most countries) 239INR ~A$4.39 1649INR ~A$30.27
Pro Live + Replays (no delay) 299INR ~$A5.49 2499INR ~A$45.87
Premium 4KUHD/HDR on supported devices. Multiview. Stream on 6 devices at once. 455INR ~A$8.36 3649INR ~A$66.97

  • Is there a way to use multiviewer whilst on a VPN?

    • I just tried it on my iPhone and it “just works”?

US VPN. Opened main race replay, opened multi viewer and added a few driver cameras no worries.

    • +7

You just described any live sporting event.

    • +2

Hand in anything you own that was made to enrich millionaires/billionaires.

    • +3

All you need to do is, drive better than them and you will be on a yacht soon enough

      • As the youth say, skill issue.

  • I have a yearly sub, but from the website.

  • Forgive me - I hardly know anything about VPNs. If you're watching 4K HDR, do you need sufficient monthly bandwidth/allowance on your VPN to watch the streams? Like 10Gb per month to watch 3 races?

    • I think most (paid) VPNs are unlimited? I don't believe bandwidth is an issue either, again on paid VPNs. I'm able to get 600mbps on NordVPN to Europe, which is far greater than the 25-50mbps that a 4K stream would require.

Having said that I don't have a device in my house that supports F1TV's 4K streams, so I haven't been able to test 4K content.

      YMMV.

I would suggest just getting NordVPN as it's available for free (100% cashback) right now, and every few months. Just remember to cancel it in time!

  • F1 TV is very average on VPN. (Surfshark). Constantly blurry and circle of annoyance.

    • i'm using nord and I don't have those issues

    • Also no issues on nord. When starting the replay it is blurry for a couple of seconds, until it realises you have a fast enough connection then switches over to 1080P and all is good for the rest of the race.

      • Cheers. Mine does it frequently like it can’t maintain the speed and work out what is going on. Additionally, pretty much every week the app asked me to login again and it takes about three attempts before getting in as if the VPN is causing some grief behind the scenes.

        • +1

Yeah maybe give NordVPN a whirl. 100% cashback at the moment.

Having said that, it could be the device are you streaming on? The VPN is introducing another layer of encryption that your device needs to decrypt, which can be CPU intensive.

It's a lot of hassle to save ~$15/ month compared to Kayo. and on Kayo you get lot of other sports live like MotoGP, IPL, AFL, NRL etc. also no need for VPN for Kayo.

    • +5

To each their own. I'm only interested in F1, and the F1TV app has this groundbreaking feature where it remembers the location you were up to if you have to stop the stream for some reason (like I do every stream, when trying to watch a bit of the race before work and then the rest after work). No longer do I have to take a photo of the TV to remember the timestamp to skip forward to (which is an ordeal in itself, because it takes forever to skip forward 2-3 hours of a stream).

      • +4

Mate… I'm glad I'm not the only one. Kayo is the single worst app I've ever used, on browser, LG TV and phone/tablet. So many races have been spoilt because I've skipped too far, or those times when it starts the "live" stream instead of "from start" no matter what you click! Lately it's just started switching to different live sports that are about to start (which I've never watched) in the middle of a race with no way to stop it!

And how the hell does it still not have a "continue watching" feature! I've complained so many times and given 1 or zero star reviews over the years and the response is always "sorry to hear you are having issues please contact us and we will try to resolve this issue". It's not an issue, it's a feature that doesn't exist!!

Don't even get me started on having to scroll through screens of golf, footy, basketball etc. to get to F1 when it's literally the only thing I watch on the service!

        • Yeah Kayo is the biggest steaming pile of crap I've ever had the misfortune to use on my AppleTV. It's one of the main reasons I unsubscribed and now just sail the high seas to get my F1 fix. Sure I have to wait for someone to upload it first, but I get it in glorious 4K HDR with the ads removed. Thanks egortech!

Not to mention that Alex Jacques (F1's lead commentator) just has the worst voice for sports commentary. Give me Sky with Crofty and Martin any day of the week.

        • It also switches from 4K to SD whenever it feels like. So you skip forward 2-3 hours to watch your race only to realise it's all pixelated.

Now you need to exit the stream, go to your settings, change it back to 4K, then repeat the skip forward 2-3 hours step.

I never want to use Kayo again lol. Steaming pile of garbage.

    • +1

some people don't watch any of those.

  • Before I look into it, is there a way to get F1TV on Android? (preferably without needing a VPN to watch)
I'm currently paying the full $25/mth for Kayo as I didn't get any of the discounts vouchers :(

    • +1

VPN is always a requirement since these prices are geo locked

    • I use it on Android and with Nordvpn it's very easy

  • +3

I wish FOM would just scrap the deal with Murdoch & let us buy F1 TV in Australia, I'd rather pay for it than Kayo.

    • Foxtel (and it's subsidiaries Hubbl and Kayo) were bought by DAZN earlier this year.

I guess Murdoch still has his finger in the pie… as News Corp now has a 6% stake in DAZN. This is all quick googling, needs fact checking.

Anyway, with such a shift in ownership maybe there's hope that the deal gets scrapped in the future.

      • Kayo’s got the F1 via the Murdoch / Sky deal - but also given DAZN own F1 rights in some countries (eg Spain), I expect they’d go for the rights here whenever they’re up for renewal.

My ask is that there’s no “TV” rights that stop people using F1 TV as an alternative.

I have annual premium through this and confirm it works

  • I'm trying to create a new apple account - but it's asking for my mobile number. My number is already associated with an apple id - so I'm getting an error that " your account cannot be created at this time"

    • I've got 3 apple accounts, AU, Turkey and India all with the same phone. That part should be fine. I'm thinking I actually got the same error. I think I might have actually disabled the VPN to create the Apple account. Can you try this?

      • Interesting - have tried without the VPN and getting the same error.

Will try again a bit later - I get a verification number to my email - I put that in, then I get one to my mobile, and that's when I get the error.

        Thanks

      • Still no luck.. Have tried different email addresses - must be the phone number, will give the missus phone number a go later.

    • Getting the same error, damn i really want to get this sorted. Let me know if you have any luck!

      • +1

You can try scour the comments here for any tips (this is for a Turkish Apple account but the steps are the same). Interestingly this post suggests using Safari on an Apple device. Try from your iPhone maybe?

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879207

        • I personally did it from Chrome on my PC yesterday. Maybe an incognito browser window?

          • @vorsprung: Have now tried incognito, a different device entirely (ipad), a different phone number and no luck on any of them.

            • +1

@The Hobo: Ok I'm finally sorted - I created an apple music account - and then tried to sign into that, but got stuck at the "agree to terms and conditions" section.

I then signed into that account using my ipad, and was able to accept the terms and conditions and voila.

              • @The Hobo: did you just use your normal phone number, follow the rest of the instructions as normal?

  • F1 TV Access is cheaper from Turkey.

  • +1

I’ll listen to Karun over Danica any day.

  • I never really looked into F1TV because I thought they cracked down on VPN usage a few years ago, but guess that was only temporary?

Shame that it looks like 4k is restricted to Apple TV and Roku.

  • Can anyone confirm if they can cast onto their TV with VPN?
I have been considering purchasing F1TV but I watch exclusively on my ipad and cast to my TV via Apple TV or Chromecast.

Much appreciated if anyone else has any experience with this

I just tried this morning and AirPlay works.

VPN on phone, no VPN on TV. Start stream on phone, AirPlay to TV and all is fine.

      • Legend, thank you so much!

  • Can I sign out of the Indian apple id once I subscribe?

    • Yep, you only need to log into the Indian Apple ID on your phone to set up the subscription, or to change / cancel it in the future. You don't need to remain logged in to use F1TV.
