How Do Mods Determine if a Post Is a "Joke Post"?

Feels like a way for posts to be taken down despite breaking no specific rules.

It seems for some types of posts, the site is determined to let the community decide with voting (eg. RRP posts). But for others, the fallback is generic "Joke Post" delete.

the weather is factor.. did the mod have a good night sleep? did the mod have a good breakfast? is the mod going through some personal stuff?

Was it a joke or a serious post? You tell me

  • +1

Joke posts? Do you mean there needs to be a category in reporting a post, with multiple reports putting said post, across a threshold, whereby it is binned? There's a history of posts that are clearly troll posts, universally divisive or bigoted. Free speech should not excuse hate speech.

TDLR: A Report category to put the rubbish in the bin, early.

      Most recent example

Greens Legends Tea Towel Four-Pack $85.00 (RRP $99.80) + Shipping (Joke post)

      • +2

You tell us, did you think it was posted as a joke post?

Are you going to buy 4x tea towels with Green members on them for $85 + Delivery?

        • -2

I don't think it's a bargain. But there's lots of things posted here I don't think is a bargain and the community votes accordingly. At least this post was actually below the RRP. More than can be said about lots of deals posted.

I don't support the Greens. But lots of things are posted here I don't support.

But what make's it a joke?

          • @PainToad:

But what make's it a joke?

"great as birthday or Christmas presents for that uncle or mother in law."

I'm sure you can easily tell it was a dig at the Greens and their voters.

Personally, I don't think the posts should be removed, but instead moved to the forums. I bit of a joke/banter is good, but let's not pollute the deal section.

              Perhaps.

              Good idea.

Alright, we have done this now. Our Joke Post guidelines do say to post such things in the forums. We can consider moving some to the forums in the future, instead of unpublishing it, although we would prefer if they were posted there to begin with, if the OP wanted it to remain published.

There might not be much to retain in the case of other joke posts, like a $140,000 watch, reduced from $280,000 and most of the comments are 'thanks OP bought 10' :) But no harm in keeping it in the forums I guess.

              • +2

@hamza23: Thanks for republishing / moving it to forums.

                'thanks OP bought 10'

Yep and it's likely they'll lose traction pretty quickly being in the forum. I think most of those types of comments are because of the popularity of the deal section, rather than just informational (or lack thereof).

              • +1

                @hamza23:

                'thanks OP bought 10'

One of the most predictable and unimaginative responses is exactly that. It'd be nice to have a filter that just deleted those at the time of posting. Or a script that sent the poster to Rick Astley.

              • @hamza23: While you're at it:
                https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869293

I'd have preferred that remain published and attract downvotes. Instead, we were denied the opportunity to bash the product.

It was a classic example of white-box manufacturing with name recognition, FOMO-driven price jacking. It was a touchstone of fashion watch poison.

But thank you mods for stifling discussion.

But what make's it a joke?

Perhaps the greens party are now seen as a joke? (based on the outcomes)
They won't complain, any attention is better than none. Or maybe the mods think the same thing personally?
Personally I think Pauline Hanson and the LNP are far bigger jokes.

@payton: How does that make me a Greens supporter?

The comment was unhinged and I’d feel the same no matter what party the deal was in relation too.

                You're a Toad.

              • -1

@PainToad: the focus in examining what gestures Elon did today or yesterday the meaning of it, and how many times. Labelling people as nazis. Doesn't sound like a centrist vote to me.

Want to make sure none of my future posts are mistakenly interrupted as a joke since there's no clear indication what criteria is used…

What deal/bargain would you have posted that you're concerned might be flagged? Its such an odd thing to say.
What you feel to be important is your prerogative, its just that the polygraph needle went off the chart a number of times.

                • -2

@payton: If MAGA is your baseline, everyone is ultra Left.

                  For context:
2008 I was hoping the US elected for Obama (D).
2012 I was hoping the US elected Romney (R).
2016 I held out hope for the Draft Romney campaign

I'm pretty close to being a centrist.

What deal/bargain would you have posted that you're concerned might be flagged? Its such an odd thing to say.

Who knows. Guess we'll find out.

  • Interesting narrative but let's see the stats:

In February, there were 0-2 posts removed out of 2191 deals posted.
In January, there were 2 posts removed out of 2168 deals posted.
In December, there were 0 or 1 post removed out of 2836 deals posted.

Plenty of reasons we remove a deal for so no need to write joke posts for any reason other than the actual.

Why was the this morning's post deemed a Joke Post?

Want to make sure none of my future posts are mistakenly interrupted as a joke since there's no clear indication what criteria is used…

      • Guess you're just going to have to risk the maximum .09% chance of posting a joke post.

What I want to know is why Moderator comments cannot be upvoted.

          • +1

@rumblytangara: I would guess it's to avoid suck ups influencing mods. Mods are human and humans are susceptible to social validation biases via 'likes', 'upvotes', etc.

            • @tenpercent: Boo, wasn't looking for a serious answer there. Was simply trying to suck up to a mod for a good joke.

But how do we know if he was joking or serious? What are the criteria?

          • +3

@rumblytangara: Mod comments need to be visible thus we click the mod comment on. We can turn it off, as I have for this comment and you can up/down vote.

  • +2

You need to get out more often if this is what’s bothering you.

    Is this a joke post?

We would know if the rule wasn't so vague.

      • Humour is very subjective. ( I'm serious.)

        • Humor is very subjective. ( I am joking. )

      This is a joka post.

      • joka

        Penalty box incoming.

      • Mario, isa thata youa?

  • same reason why JV has not been permanently banned yet….

  • +1

OP, you are not allowed to be happy here.

    • +2

      You've got to be joking.

  • +1

As with moderation of any private platform, there will be a degree of subjectivity, and sometimes reasons beyond straight logic.

At the very simplest it would be curating content they do not want displayed and/or that might start a trend of copy-cat posts that descends into arguments or excessive additional moderation required, especially when related to something political.

How Do Mods Determine if a Post Is a "Joke Post"?

    if they laugh or not.

Why didnt you post up the Ikea "deal"…

Clive Palmer paid $60 million and didnt get a seat… At Ikea, he could have gotten one for $27.99

    • +2

Clive Palmer paid $60 million and didnt get a seat

      Probably because he preferenced labor.

    • With all due respect, Clive's expansive Chinese sponsored arse requires a load rated bench.

  • Ring Sizer's are a joke

  • How about joke deals? Pretty sure the Greens tea towels for $85 was posted as a joke, even if there is a discount. Ah, I see it has been deleted.

I was going to do a Joke Post, then I thought, wooden get it?

    • I love a joke that the ozbargain comedians wooden get

If Forum posts are worthy of consideration in this post, read on
I have a friend with who has had a semi-offensive nickname for over 30 years, and revelled in it.
It came from a 1980's movie so you can put a timeline on it. feel free to nominate a choice
He also bestows a unique sobriquet on all his friends who didn't already have one, and they stick, and they all love it.
But I can assure you that it would be hate speech to anyone who doesn't understand humour.
"Hate speech " is something anyone disagrees with, and mainly defined by an inability to engage in what used to be called debate.
But it is only debate that exposes both parties to alternative views, and redefines "Hate" as "disagreement"
A generation ago, an"Ad hom" attack on a debater would have banned the originator.

Now, a line like that would generate an "OK Boomer" with 6 +, pr "Name checks out" but making no contribution to a debateable topic.
So the moderators action would be to ask themself "does this contribute value to the post?" or doesn't it
As a corollary, is a "neg" hate sppech?
So what line would a moderator take?

  • +1

Hi unfortunately most posts are turned into joke posts. It seems there are heaps of ozbargainers who have hopes of being a comedian and try out there lines here.
More comedians than bargain hunters here sometimes.

  • bargain hunters

    Maybe it's rabbit season.
