More Credit Card Rejections

Hi all,

I've recently suffered two credit card application rejections from different providers (NAB, AMEX). In the past I might get one, but two in a row seems off. I appreciate you never find out the real reason.

Checked credit scores with all three agencies - all Excellent.

Have a mortgage, but easily make repayments. Only other debt is existing credit card. In the past, I've applied for another credit card whilst holding my previous one - now I'm wondering if its necessary to drop the old one first.

The only other thing I thought I might be getting wrong - what I list for my expenses breakdown. Might be misinterpreting a category. I'm very honest/accurate as I track my finances thoroughly.

I've also wondered if there is a trend towards avoiding churners with the banks now.

    AMEX hates churners.

  • Getting harder to churn now. More banks having 2 year exclusions and cards have higher min spends for points that are now worth less due to devaluations.

    Bearish signal.

AMEX pretty much auto-rejects anyone who's held more than 2 cards over the last year - haven't been able to get one for 4 years now
Westpac, St George, BoM are also pretty anti churners

NAB, HSBC, Suncorp, Virgin & ANZ are the only ones accepting me atm.

If you keep applying it will only get worse. Why? The credit enquiries remain on your report for years. I still have one on my report from five years ago that was rejected.

The more rejections you have the less likely it will be you can get a card. What happens when you really need credit urgently and everyone rejects you?

Credit was easy to obtain a decade ago. Companies threw out limit increase offers like confetti. Now? Everything is super tight.

Credit scores don't mean much anymore. It's only a way to automatically reject applicants at the first hurdle. Then banks start the actual checking.

My suggestion is don't apply for another card at least for a few years.

  • it took me 3 weeks to get approved by CBA for a card

  • Thanks all. It was good while it lasted. I'll try and aim for a good points earner - not bonus - and settle down on it…

  • Do you put in a credit limit? Try not putting one if you do. Let them decide, I’ve always been approved if I do this. I was rejected a few times before trying this method.

  • Don't know if credit cards are the same, but I have had experience with those credit companies that offer interest free periods.

Probably ten years ago now, but bought a new lounge from somewhere that offered 36 months interest free.

Was able to buy it outright, but thought could keep my money working for me for an extra three years whilst I used on their interest free.

Should have been an absolute slam dunk but my application got rejected.

Apparently I wasn't the kind of customer who their offer was aimed at. They didn't want customers who would pay it off in three years and use their money interest free. They wanted customers who were not likely to pay it off in three years and thus become a long term customer paying a whole bunch of interest on the money you hadn't repaid and potentially kept redrawing on, never paying it off and continuing to pay interest (I think the interest rates were quite high, too) for a really long time.

  • Just got approved from St George in Mar and then ANZ in April - I need spend several big bills this time of the year.

One auto rejection from Humm90 mob - which I then applied for the ANZ mentioned above.
