Major Dental - Crowns & Possible Root Canal - Recommendations Needed (Melbourne)

Hi all…

Simple story…went to the dentist and apparently I may have some decay under an old crown. Dentist sent me to a specialist who is saying that to old crown needs to be removed everything checked and a new crown fitted. Another tooth also may require a crown….and as an added bonus if they discover anything serious I may need a root canal. Specialist wants me to see a periodontist first.

She has quoted me about $2700 per crown …which seems quite high to me. Can anyone set me straight?? Is this too high?? Anywhere I can go to check?? Can anyone recommend a dentist that would do the work and also a periodontist ??

Thanks all…

Stulte…
PS: Insurance not an option….waiting periods and annual limits dont add up to the overall permium you would need to pay!!

Go to Asia and get it done cheaper. When I say cheaper, heaps cheaper. Cheaper and better.

  • Hi,

It sounds like you won't actually get a much different version of things until such time as the Crown is removed and as such you could outlay money, just to be told again they want to investigate by removing the crown and see where things are at.

Is the "other" tooth that is also a candidate for a crown an adjoining tooth…

Mrs B and I had a similar deal. She was told that she needed two crowns, me one, looked like an expensive situation. We had intended to go overseas later this year so that idea was going south, fast. Unless…
We went to Da Nang in Vietnam. Set up appointments via WhatsApp, went in the afternoon after we arrived.
I cannot over-emphasise how good the service was. Far beyond what we are accustomed to here. The equipment was state-of-the-art. My dentist explained to me what the X-rays showed and what he would do.
Turns out my wife only needed one crown. That, the consultation, the X-rays and a 40-minute clean came to $385.
So we got everything we needed done, plus a 2-week vacay, for less than the cost of getting it done here. We would do it again in a heartbeat.
PS I believe that the clinic has another location in Hanoi, if that helps with airfare costs

My wife is from Da Nang and we go every year and have all our dental work done there. Fantastic service and all state of the art too! 10% the cost of getting it done here in Australia.

Can you post or PM details.
I was talking to a filipino nurse who flies to Manila for dentist work. Much cheaper including airfares in an english speaking country

    • Hey Branners, could you PM me details of that clinic? It would be very appreciated. Thank you

    • Details please Branners….and how did you go about finding and vetting the place you went with?

It was the Australian Dental Clinic. The home page is for their clinics in Da Nang and Hanoi.
        https://australiandentalclinic.vn/travel-da-nang/
Did as much homework as we could online before committing, which can always be a bit iffy, but we decided that if we had any doubts at all about the place before we went in, we would bail. No such doubts; like I said, their service was very impressive.
BTW, everyone we dealt with spoke perfect English. There were even follow-up messages the next day on WhattsApp, checking on the treatment we received.
Let me know how it goes!

Check out value dental centre. I did 1 crown for $1k and an implant + crown for $3.8k. Can't fault their work (yet) but they do provide warranty. Better than going overseas if something goes wrong.

Just wait for Albo to pay for it with your own money via Medicare.

  • You may need two specialists: periodontists cover gums, endodontists do root canals. To compare prices for the crown, item number will be on your quote; possibly 613 - Full Crown Non Metallic Indirect

    • Yes.
I belive 2 specialists will be required.

She has quoted me about $2700 per crown

    That's cheap.

Cheap… for the type of crown in your display picture.

Obviously one Crown for everyday and another for formal. lol

    • Are you being serious when you say thats cheap? I dont know if it is or isnt.

      • A crown can easily cost $4K plus with some specialists…

  • You might want to ask second opinion. I go to Bentleigh Dental on Mckinnon. They have good dentists there. The dentist that I normally see is called Andrew Hawkins. He's an honest general dentist and not too expensive.

  • Check out Mary Dental in Oakleigh - pm me please

She fixed my root canal which the previous dentist didn't do properly
