Dont we get news from Tiktok these days?

    • +5

Yes we do, it is hard to read words, when it can just be spoken to us as lyrics and interpretive dance.
Also we love the Chinese getting all the data and not facebook or x.

    • I get mine from the comedian Josh Johnson and Chris Kohler shorts.

Note that this is the Games subscription only, no access to news, cooking etc. like you would get as part of the All Access subscription

    I have this offer;

    "Save on unlimited access
    with our best offer
    on The Times.
Our sale is on. Don’t miss out
    A$0.50/week for your first
    six months year
Billed as A$2 every four weeks, then A$25 thereafter."

    • Yeah I used this one and it's All Access

  • Got 2 offers, also for unlimited access;

    "A$180
    A$20/year
Billed once for your first year."

Basic Wordle is still free & that’s plenty of US grammar for me.

    • Wordle Bot isn't

      • Just download the firefox addon to access it for free. It's just hiding behind an annoying popup.

  • Thanks OP. Got a year for $20 🙂

  • Only Crossword and Spelling Bee are not free*.

Spelling Bee after certain number of points, but you can do on paper, Excel, etc., or just go for the pangram. There are past crosswords for free.

When the kids have grown up, I will subscribe for a year and go back and do all the Wordles, Connections, etc. that I missed. Spelling Bee and Crossword will take a long time, esp. those Saturday ones.

  • Strands and the mini are pretty fun too but they're also free

I just picked up this deal. I then went to see if I could disable auto renew in a year (which I don't think you can as it's billed monthly), however, it then offered me half price, which is $0.38c a month. Even better

    • So you paid the full first year price already though right?

      • Ignore me, I realised the retention offer was per week, and not per month, so I am worse off haha

  • +6

I pay $2 monthly for all access. It was $20 for the first year and then when I went to cancel I renewed at the $2 monthly rate.

Just a data point if you're interested in more than games. I absolutely love the recipes, games, the athletic and the news is fine.

  • I got the subscription on sale last time. Most of the games - Wordle, Connections, Strands, Mini Crossword and Sudoku are free to play every day.

I now do the regular crossword, though not sure that I'd continue paying for it. Going back through the archive is nice. Gives me something to do when I'm on the train.

  • Yeah dailies are free but I think these days the archive they've built up is valuable.

    What a tripe deal!

    • -2

      Absolutely 100% tripe deal!

  • -1

Ah yes Monsieur Compromised NYT, the "master leaker." Great games though!

  • For those that already have a NYTimes games subscription, I went to cancel my subscription and was presented with the 75% off for 1 year deal to stay subscribed.

    Total due every 4 weeks
    A$0.75

Heads up you'll end up paying "13 months" each year

  • +2

My only news source is X

  • +3

I pay $2/month for a full NYT sub. Singed up for the $20 first year deal, went to cancel, got offered a $2/month sub.

  • if you have a library subscription, you can usually access the NYT through Pressreader, for free

I usually screenshot the crossword and complete it in MS Paint

The New York Times is my first choice in fake news. You will not be disappointed.

    Maybe I'm overlooking something but…
Paying for a subscription nowadays for…. news?
I could understand if it was extremely high quality, or attempted to be unbiased (Ground news etc), but…. NYTimes?

And then to pay them for just their "gaming" offering, without the news, and for games that can be played for free elsewhere?

Definitely feels like I'm missing something here.

    • You are getting crossword & spelling bee and archives.

      Their news is high quality.

    • the offer is clearly not for you

Are we that use to getting things for free that we can't see things need to be funded? Yes running a newspaper costs money to have journalist, editors and staff to run newspapers. Just like the games section that form part of the newspaper. The games sections are free elsewhere because they get ripped off from creators that have spent time and money to develop them.

Before the internet people would have to pay daily for a newspaper and that fee covered all the costs to run the newspaper not just the printing costs.

      • The games sections are free elsewhere because they get ripped off from creators that have spent time and money to develop them.

They paid low millions for Wordle and beat out Washington Post; yes there are copies of Wordle but they have to generate their own, etc, and I'm not sure if copyright of the concept is possible. There is at least one transcription of the daily Sudoku into alternate software, but it acknowledges the NYT (just makes it more logical to do - and I use this platform).

Agree - they have pay for specialist puzzle setters, e.g. the Chinese lady for Connections, the guy for Spelling Bee and Letter Boxed, the editor for the Crossword and separate one for the Mini, etc.

Hmm I get subscription to the online NY Times, including online news, games and cooking, for $15AUD/ year on special. When it comes to resubscription, they try to put it to full price, I request cancelation (they don’t let you click a button to cancel), then I speak to one of their sales team, and they reinstate the &15/year for me. Has happened two years running. Saw the $15 special popping up on Insta I think, but I am likely targeted as I’ve subscribed to NYT for about 10 years.

  • I enjoy doing Spelling Bee but got annoyed at the free option stopping with a paywall after a few words. Figured I'd sign up for one month for 75c and see how much I do that, and whether I trawl the archives of Connections and Wordle.

  • Thanks OP.

I was offered $12pa for games, $20pa for full access.

The Wordle archive access can be used to build up stats - total solved, but not longest streak.

Reminder that you can get NYT games for free through yourlibrary with a Victoria address (you might be able to lie), you get an access code for 24 hours but you can request codes as many times as you want.
