iMac 27" Upgrade to Mac Mini

Looking at upgrading my 2012 IMac 27" for a Mac mini, but cant decide on a decent monitor, I wont go smaller than 27" and have also contemplated twins. Then in my research i see many have opted for a 32" monitor inlace of twins.

Can I get some recommendations on 27" - 32" monitors, budget around 1k

TIA

What do you use your computer for?

  • What's the usage? If you want something to replace what you have now, Asus Proart, 27", 1440p resolution, great colour reproduction like Apple aims for. Well under $1k.

The biggest problem I find with macs is scaling, they're seriously bad at it. Getting the UI the right size for what you want becomes painful so it's worth keeping that in mind. Getting a 4K 32" screen will mean all the icons are smaller (thanks to the higher DPI), although BetterDisplay is handy for fixing some of that.

I find the opposite. Dell 27 inch 4K for my Mac mini. The Mac scaled it automatically. Looks perfect. All icons the right size, not too big, not too small, haven’t had a single issue, and I use it every day.

Can see why you're upgrading to mac mini instead of new imac as now they only come in 24" , no longer offer 27" size and their standalone 27" studio display costs 2.5k yikess !

    • Yeah not prepared to fork out that much. Been waiting a number of years for apple to release another 27” iMac, but have given up.

You can buy 27" Mac monitors second hand on eBay etc for around $500 if you want to keep the look.

If you use it for work at all you might want to consider an ultrawide. I have the Dell P3424WE and the additional real estate really helps. I got it on a 10% discount for about $670. Keep in mind it runs at 3440*1440, so not 4K but it scales well as the PPI is 109.24. The curve is also very slight if that concerns you.

I use Rectangle for window management in MacOS and Power Toys for my Windows work laptop. Also the free version of Lunar allows you to program a hotkey to switch easily between the two inputs.

  • Whatever you get, don’t go 1440p or lower with macOS. It looks like garbage with how to os renders the desktop/fonts. You want 4k minimum so you can scale, ideally 5k - but that will set you back quite a lot so I’d say, set 4k as your target.

With that in mind a single 32” would probably work out cheaper than 2x 27”

    • I do have access to staff pricing so ill check out the 5k models

  • Have you thought about using you iMac in target display mode as a monitor?
