Dodo Smart Meter Upgrade Notice [Already Have Smart Meter]

Hey everyone, I just got an email from Dodo letting me know of a scheduled smart meter upgrade.

I already have a smart meter since installing solar 5 years ago. Is this notice a mistake or is there a newer smart meter?

PS. If you have the option to remain on the old spinning meter… stick with it. Most energy retailers are only offering time of use tarrifs now (I'm with Ausgrid and Dodo is the only remaining one allowing a single rate tarrif).

  • Sounds like a mistake.

    They sounds like dodos.

  • Newer smart meters allow remote reading. So probably changing to this. I had same situation with origin.

    • I got solar in 2009, so I got one of the earliest smart meters. It has been remote read from the day it was installed.

      • My solar system was installed in 2012 and they installed a smart meter em1200 to go with it. But no remote reading. That was a new smart meter 12 years later.

Mine definitely has remote reading and reads/sends every 30 minute intervals though. And when I move to another energy provider, they don't have to send anyone out for a "final reading".

I'm already able to change providers anytime during the billing cycle.

  • It will be a smarter meter than your current smart meter. I'm on my 3rd "upgraded" smart meter since 2018

A smart meter doesn't mean you are stuck on TOU. I've moved TOU to fixed and back to TOU with Ausgrid retailers.

    • Hmmmm…. I guess the tarrif you're offered is in the hands of these retailers. It will be in their best interest to force you to be on the TOU tarrif.

      • You can request a tariff change.

Whether TOU or fixed is best depends on your usage needs. TOU works best for me at the moment.

        • I've never actually called or emailed energy retailers directly… I'll give that a shot.

It's only when I get a quote for my address, for some they will only offer TOU.

I had a similar thing with another retailer. It seems I had an early version of the smart meters which didn't do some of the things that the newer ones did.

    • Hmmm, it may be in my best interest to keep it as old as possible. I wish I stayed on my traditional spinning meter. That was golden.
