Just shows how OP these bikes are

    • i think i saw people mode these to go 80km/h

  • +6

A lot of the newer motors are coming out with more than twice the nm in the motors now.

    • +2

They have been out for a long time, but why would you want a 100+ nm motor when you can have a 17-18kg bike instead of 25kg

      • +1

I don't know how much the dji motors weigh but I think they would be comparable if not lighter.

        • +1

          1.85kg vs 2.52kg (dji)

      • Well plenty of models are now pushing the original era lightweight e-MTB weights with full power motors. That includes Amflow and Giant Trance E Lite, both of which can be found cheaper than the Trek’s with better spec.

        • +1
          • +3

@abowen: Sorry I was just considering retail, but retail trek are massively overpriced for the spec. The 9.7 that was 11.5k would get smoked in spec by the 9k Amflow.

I have a Trek Rail. Amflow wasn’t out when I bought my eMTB but my next one will 100% be a full power lightweight and the Amflow is currently unmatched in that regard for pricing and performance.

            • +1

@Pelicannn: Yep, agreed now I'm comparing them

That Amflow is crazy good. Twice torque, 3x power, and same weight as this Trek.

              • +2

@abowen: Yep it’s a game changer. If nothing else, it has helped to push a lot of sales out from other manufacturers because post Covid, manufacturers have been price-gouging for years, riding on the Covid boom.

Seriously, Specialized having the audacity to roll out a $24k S-Works in the last month is a bold strategy, and consequently they have been (profanity) roasted for it (so they should). How an eMTB can possibly cost that much when the Amflow with near identical components is $10,000 less is wild.

Trek, Specialized, Giant, Santa Cruz, Merida etc are all sweating because the only way they can compete is to massively cut their price, and cutting their price is going to piss off any previous consumer who paid xyz for the previous gen model and now the new one is half the price with newer tech.

                I have no sympathy though.

                • @Pelicannn: waiting for a dji / gearbox ebike before I retire my mulleted Norco Range VLT.

a mate has this trek and it's a great riding bike with good support but really starting to show it's age in the era of DJI powered bikes.

                • +1

@Pelicannn: 24 grand ?! WTF there have been electric car deals that just about got down into the twenties…

                  • @Nom: Yup. Dirt bikes, heck even high end road bikes like a Ducati Panigale or a BMW S1000r are cheaper. It’s wild…

                • @Pelicannn: That's crazy.

Even when their S-Works Tarmac hit $20k I choked. No battery, no motor.

More fat on them, the more opportunity for others. Glad Amflow's doing the needful

Maybe I'm too wishful, but once a 500W+, 50nm+, sub-20kg with XC travel or better can be bought for $5k (on sale), I'll jump in.
I say this because I bought my last MTB for $3.5k, and a Bafang kit costs $1.5k.

                  • @abowen: Honestly the difference between 250W and 750W isn't really noticeable unless you have a thumb throttle or are an absolute chungus.

I've got a 250W/85nm/sub-20kg class 5 rideable that was about $6400 with deal and gift card stacking.
My biggest issue with the series 4 Bosch and the Shimano e series is the freaking speed limit.

The pedal assist cuts out at either 25kmh or 32kmh. And you get resistance going faster, so you are basically cutting off the bottom and the top of the "fun curve" to stay in the middle.

If I ever get around to it I'll try to figure out a way around the limiter mostly for riding on the flats inbetween good trails or town because I can literally ride faster on my gravel bike.

And being overtaken by eshays on $1000 scooters simply because of a limiter drives me nuts.

                    • @Telios: Yeah fair enough

I've got a 250w bafang conversion on my cargo bike, and it feels like I'm putting 75% of the effort in when going up hills, hence why I was looking for more power

                      Admittedly that's with 30kg bike + 90kg adult + 25kg kid + 12.5kg kid

Bit of different story once subtract 50kg from equation

100% with speed limit issues. 25kph is super frustrating. If it was 35kph, that'd be perfect and about what I do on my road bike on flats (without headwind)

What's the advantage of owning these bikes compared to Camry 2006? I'm protected from the elements in a Camry - plus I could do DoorDash jobs while these bikes seem to be lacking in both storage and protection from weather conditions.

    • +14

Camry can't go on a bike trail

        Challenge accepted

      • -1

        Why not?

    • +2

I like your practical thinking but I am afraid riders on this bike probably aren't thinking ROI or productivity generated from it.

    • +3

What's the advantage of owning these bikes compared to Camry 2006?

12 year old kids can't drive a Camry.

    • Less wheels to change!

    • This is a disposable income kind of purchase.

  • -3

Cheaper to get a motor bike or a dirt bike because lets be honest who's going to peddle!

    • +1

Honestly, 2x kawasaki ninja or 1 electirc mountain bike?
      https://www.bikesales.com.au/bikes/kawasaki/ninja-series/bet…

      • +1

Wow, they're alot less expensive than I was expecting.

        • Comparing new vs second hand isn't fair

I picked up my 6yo cargo ebike for $600 when it was $6k new, then spent another $400 refreshing it

          • +2

@abowen: Damn, how did you manage that? Marketplace find?

            • @OfTheOverflow: Yeh, was lucky. Was pretty rusty and worn from being left outside

I like that it's worn, less chance someone will nick it

However I did put an airtag hidden on it the other day just in case. I just wish they were a touch smaller

    • +1

I've thought about it and weight is key factor for me

100kg for typical dirt bike vs <20kg for these

Also a lot more MTB'ing tracks vs dirt bike in my area

  • Thanks, brought 2

    • +19

      Where did you bring them?

      • Likely home.

      • Home… Where do you take yours after you get them? :)

    • +1

I bought 7. One for each day of the week.

      • +7

I rest on the sabbath so only bought 6

        • +1

Wouldn’t you buy 1 E-MTB then and get 6 MTBs for the rest of the week?

  • +4

Can’t believe the 9.7 is not a full carbon frame for $11,500 rrp treks are insanely over priced

    • +1

      it is carbon

  • annoying how the list isnt sortable / filterable

  • +1

Something like the Focus Jam SL is a much better buy imo. 20% more battery capacity, 20% more torque a few hundred dollars less.

  • Can the battery be replaced in 5 years time?

    • Based on a quick Google search, not sure about this particular model, but some of theirs can have battery replacements. The batteries are over $1000 though.

  • +1

This is more like a purchase if you bought 90 eth in 2018 for $200 each and forgot about it and now they are worth $360,000 and you drop $20k on a bicycle to
    Impress your wife.

    • $20k on a bicycle? You could buy 6 "slightly used" Toyota Hikux's with only 150000km on the clock!

    • This is more you got into the house market early thanks to bank of mum and dad, and now you've got a house + rental property mostly paid off and flush with cash

  • -1

WOW. I was waiting for this deal. Sold all my cars and bought 7. Thanks

  • +4

My dentist and hygienist both recommended Trek.

    • +2

      Mine recommended Oral-B

      • E-models?

  • Would it possible to unlock the speed limit of 25 kmph? Thanks.

    • Something like this? woudlnt risk burning out the motor.. this is to comfortably get up the trails and enjoy the down.

  • This or used car?

  • What size engine do you get for 11,000 ?

  • The motor is pathetic 50 Nm. If you've ever ridden Bafang G510 you'll feel the difference straight away.

    • +2

This motor is virtually silent. I have one of these bikes and can barely hear the motor even when climbing. As far as I know none of other motor brands is as silent as this. This was one of the reason I picked this bike.

      • +1

Fair enough. Personally, I prefer as loud as possible so that everybody can get out of the way quicker

  • Probably very fun to ride, but still a lot of money for a bike to most people.

Also, only L and XL are available.

  • Any recommendations for road e-bike around $2,000? Just need for a 25km roundtrip a few times a week.

  • Bicycle with a car price tag. Not for everyone!

  • I purchased the EMTB Valk Titan 9+ for $1,899 a few months ago. It features a mid-drive motor with 80 N·m of torque (peaking at 100 N·m). Although the other components are basic mountain bike specs, it is at least a full-suspension design, making the ride relatively comfortable . I really hope this bike could be lighter, but I know that a lightweight branded model would cost me over $6,000, which is way too expensive. I also really like DJI's EMTB, but at $9,800, just way too expensive I would never buy it.

    • +1

Fwiw… DJI’s Amflow is the cheapest EMTB you can buy when you consider equivalent spec from another major manufacturer.

It’s just the bicycle industry as a whole right now… everything was jacked through covid because it gave them record sales and demand, so they just thought that would keep going. Except what actually happened is probably half the people who bought a bike in covid to ‘exercise’ are now no longer riding and trying to sell their near new bikes on marketplace for significant drops. Manufacturers overproduced stock, and jacked pricing so much that discounts need to be huge to compete with people who can just go and buy a 12 month old bike for half the price.

I feel sorry for LBS because they are probably the ones holding the bag of expensive stock that won’t sell, purely because manufacturers kept raising RRPs.

      • Yup lot of LBS down sizing or closing in the last few years in my area.

Even trek or specialised got into a bit of grief in Australia.

Also the rise of direct to consumer bike stores makes it extra costly to have display floors over a warehouse.

I still find the price of bikes egregious and I own many many bikes including ones I've built myself. I would never recommend anything over $2-3k for anyone other than heavy enthusiasts these days.

I honestly think people need to try hiring eBikes more than owning them.

I ride daily and it'll still take me 60+ days of eMTB to make it worth it over hiring (probably already exceeded by now but still)

        • +1

Yeah definitely. Not the first time either. If you’re not aware, Specialized went a while back in the early 2000’s and was bought out by Merida. Wouldn’t be surprised if this happens to some brands in the near future.

I’ve got a 9.9 rail which I paid $11k on sale for, I ride every weekend and I’m probably still not recouped based on hiring but there’s no where to hire where I live and life is too short to ride shit bikes 😂

    • Is that $1,899 new? Seems like a great price, can’t seem to find any near that price at the moment.

      • yea~ new bike

  • I also think DJI Amflow's specs and price point are excellent, but unfortunately it's way beyond my budget. Maybe when I need an upgrade after five years, I'll reconsider DJI - hopefully by then EMTB will be more widespread and prices will have come down a bit.

I'm quite relieved that Australia doesn't have the capacity to follow America's lead in joining a trade war with China, otherwise I might not even be able to afford this EMTB 😂

    • Yes my hope too.
