🚗 Free Home EV Charger (RRP $1899) for First 500 Buyers of Volkswagen ID.4 2024 Model @ VW Dealers

📍 Source: Volkswagen’s “No Charge for Charger” DealRACQ,, Drive

🧠 Just sharing in case it helps anyone currently considering an EV!

I recently test drove the Volkswagen ID.4 2024 model at VW Bayford Fairfield Dealership (VIC) and was told there’s a free home EV wall charger (RRP $1899) included for the first 500 buyers of either the ID.4 or ID.5. https://fairfieldvolkswagen.com.au/

Offer Highlights
* Applies to MY24 Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5
* Includes standard installation:
* up to 20m cabling
* safety switch
* circuit breaker
* certified installer
* Valued at $1899, covered fully by Volkswagen Australia
* Expected to end once MY24.5 or MY25 stock arrives – around July to September 2025
No code needed – just check with your local VW dealership

According to recent EV sales statistics - there were 182 VW sold so far. So should be plenty of free chargers available : Source: https://thedriven.io/2025/05/05/australian-electric-vehicle-…

I couldn’t find much chatter online about this deal, but thought it was worth sharing — especially if you're already looking at EVs around the $60,000 AUD mark.

I've recently test driven:
Xpeng G6
🚀 Tesla Model Y
🧠 Hyundai Ioniq
🌱 Hyundai Kona Electric

And honestly, the ID.4 was one of the best to drive — smooth, quiet, spacious, and really intuitive.
That said, I’m personally holding off to see what the MY24.5 or MY25 refresh brings, and compare the cost and kit with other offers in September or EOY (likely Wireless Android Auto and some nice feature upgrades).

📞 This is just a product information - I am not the salesperson or even an owner, just a curious customer **
**Check with your local VW dealer
to confirm availability and whether the charger is still included — it's a dealer-based offer and may vary by location.

Hope this helps someone who's comparing EV options or on the fence like I am! 🧑‍🔧🔋🌱

Can't expect to be able to afford a house while driving a new car every few years.

    • Pfft..Home owner….peasant.
Bought 10, for each stand alone house

    • pretty sure the ID 4 and 5 don't even make the top 4 evs in the country. so I wouldn't say its one of the best. these are the bottom of the barrel cars, with Tesla, BYD, Mercs and MG being the top sellers.

      • +1

Given the post indicates they just went on sale, and no deliveries until July it's not surprising they are aren't in the top 4 as they are probably still on a ship bound for AU. Not how this qualifies as not one of the best, and considered bottom of the barrel cars.

    • +8

mate I'm a (profanity) dirty poor immigrant and I managed to buy a house with no help

so stop crying and start saving / working / up skilling / moving

  • Take your time…

  • +6

This is a crazy expensive RRP for a charger….

    • +4

Probably right, but this includes installation. From what I can tell most chargers start at about $700, and then you add installation costs. So $1800 probably is what you'd expect to pay. For a charger with any solar smarts, then chargers + install can be $2-$2.5k

    • +1

Also includes installation, and since it's bundled with the car means it can be covered by a NL. So it's essentially a tax deductible installation and charger, which normally you can't get covered.

Not saying it's an amazing deal, just a consideration.

  • +10

Hey, at least VW won't get pinged with Dieselgate for this!

    • +6

I wouldn't be shocked if there was an Electrogate, I wonder if VW would be more conductive to investigations than they were with dieselgate.

      • +10

It was only a phase. Surely it won't come up in current events again

        • +6

When the news comes out, it will be electrifying

        • +2

You'd think they'd be more grounded these days, but I'm sure they're charging ahead into the next disaster. I wonder if they'll amp it up a notch this cycle.

          • +1

@JIMB0: Ohm my goodness, maybe they should change their name to Voltswagen.

  • -1

They need to include not only the charger but the cost of the installation (and the f**k around of finding a sparky who will do it) if they want these promos to have any traction.

An SEVR X1 is only $399 and will provide home charging for the majority of households. A $1,900 one should clean the house for me at the same time.

    • +5

I Updated it to be clear. It says it includes installation.
"Free 7kw EV Home Charger with Standard Installation for The First 500 Orders of Volkswagen ID.4 or ID.5 @ Volkswagen"

    • Haven't met a sparky that wouldn't install an EV charger.

I had my Evnex E2 installed yesterday. Everyone I enquired with were more than happy to install.

      • I should say, the issue in my experience is finding someone to actually commit to a time to come scope out the project and then do it - I definitely agree that, subject to placing one in a weird place (e.g. at the back of a house when the switchboard is at the front), it isn't a complicated job.

    • +1

that charger doesn’t actually come with a cable . You need to add a few hundred more to that price

      • SEVR sells a type 2 cable for $99, you can also get them cheaper on eBay, and many cars come with one anyway.

  • +1

Waiting to see their ID3 models. Have a Tesla charger, simple to use has an app to plan charges during the cheap hours.

  • +4

Unless you are doing more than 150 km a day (95% of the avergae drivers doesn't), A 10A charger is adequate ($300 to $550 total cost for the charger).
I went for a 15A socket (coat $300 to install) that was perfect as charge during the day on excess solar.

    • wow, $300 is real good to get the 15A socket. I paid $500, was this something you had to negotiate?

  • +3

And honestly, the ID.4 was one of the best to drive — smooth, quiet, spacious, and really intuitive

heavily biased…… supported by the amount of text on this post and text styling… VW fan boy?

    • I'm inclined to agree though after owning a model Y since 2022. VW tave a dealership within 5min drive from my place so maybe one day I'll give it a test

  • +8

Was this deal written by chatgpt? I had an aneurysm reading it

    • -1

nah you just have brain damage

      • RIP

  • Haha,

    European cars…

  • +11

The car, which is sold in China with a price tag of US$19000…….
    Rip off price in Aus…..

    • come on, think about energy prices in Germamy, let alone labor cost, Australian tax (right side steering wheel etc.).

all In all. it's a reasonable price in this shitty local market. but I won't touch it by all means, it's such a hedious car inside & out.

      • +1

Forgetting i before e is hideous.

    • +4

I pointed out the same thing a while back about new Toyota's being much cheaper and having no wait time in China. People on here claimed it was because they were made locally and the spec is different, however that would only account for a small difference. We just get ripped off here.

  • +3

Any reason not to include the BYD Sealion 7 in your list of similar cars? From an interior, styling and features perspective, and in my opinion, the Sealion is ahead of the VW ID4, but I can't comment on how they drive, reliability, etc

    • +4

BYD after market support isn't great. Once you buy the car you're on your own a bit. Cars are coming without mats/cabin liners because they're out of stock. If you have a crash you're in trouble getting replacements and the dealer will just tell you they're flat out with new cars. I say this as a BYD owner. Also common to see on the BYD Australia FB groups.

      • +2

Also BYD owner here, but i dont really agree with you well not completely anyway.

Regarding after market support: Yeah its not the best but not the worst either, have done over 40000kms in mine in under 18mnths, have had a some cosmetic warranty issues, but where all sorted easily enough, i did find it much better to deal directly with service center as opposed to, call center/email support as depending on who actually answers your email and how much they can be bothered to do something is a an issue, but can only speak from my experience, but all in all experience has been ok, not really better or worse than other brands I've dealt with

As for cars coming without mats/cabin liners: that can be a bit misleading, the cars dont come with them they are add-ons, although i think they should come with them as part of the price of the car not add-ons, regardless they should have better stock quantities, but being an add-on they are prob assuming not everyone is going to purchase especially since there are various alternatives to choose from

Regarding replacements parts, i agree they need to have more supply, if someone is in an accident and cant get back on the road because they have to wait months for a part is bad, and in some states even cracked taillight cover, even if the the light itself is still 100% functional, is considered not roadworthy, so doesnt even have to be a major accident to be off the road for a long time. Issue is they prioritise parts to their preferred repaired partners too which is unfortunate, i had a repair booked in at a my regular repairer, and he had another car with similar damage required same part, was waiting months for the part, i had an unrelated warranty issue getting sorted at on of BYDs preferred repairers, they were able to source the part within in a week.

Overall though im really happy with car, and the overall support i have had, but again everyones issues and treatment will differ

        • Phone calls probably also work a lot better than emails when you need to get something actually done in a hurry. Thanks for your comment

      • +3

Have you dealt with VW aftermarket support?

It's not great and will leave your wallet in tatters.

        • I have, other car is VW, mostly been ok, and yes expensive

    • +1

I'm sure the byd is great. I just didn't have a chance to test drive it. So far I did 4 test drives, two of them are evee rentals for 4 days, which is more than what most do. Especially the witty ones that comment without test driving any EV or comparing real cost and specs. So that's why I didn't include it in the list. One of the items on the to do list. Yes, btw I used chat GPt to write it. It's easy, fast and compliant with the standard posts. Looks better than some posts I read. But next time I'll try to organise it a bit more. ☺️.

BTW, the VW cars we get are probably made in USA.

It appears that the website isn’t even functioning correctly. If a car company can’t even manage their own marketing website, don’t expect me to trust their products.

    Only 500?
    Why so stingy VW?

    • +1

They lose money on every car the sell.

    • +1

They probably won't even sell that many, so it won't matter.

    • If they said every car, the numpties wouldn't rush to buy it.

They'll be lucky to sell 500 anyway

  • +3

won't consider VW cars with their touch sensitive steering wheel buttons

  • +1

    Not a great looking car.

    Get a Model Y.

    • +5

You got me laughing out loud. I can only think of one car that is uglier than a Model Y, and that is the Cybertruck ;-)

      • Unpopular opinion

        • Well, the Y looks like a 3 in one of those distortion mirrors.

The 3 looks ok, except that there are way too many of them, and most are white.

    • And you think the Model Y is a great looking car?

      • +1

Highest selling EV in Australia, I don't think buyers have an issue with how it looks.

    • I have a Model Y (2023) and I have to admit that I don't think it looks amazing 😅
Love everything else about it though.

Now, the new one looks really good! But the recent Trump/Musk fiasco is still too fresh to consider a new Tesla.

Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 (MY24) Pricing in Australia

    Pricing:
    • ID.4 Pro: $59,990 + on-road costs
    • ID.4 GTX: $69,990 + on-road costs
    • ID.5 Pro: $62,990 + on-road costs
    • ID.5 GTX: $72,990 + on-road costs
    Performance Specs:

ID.4 Pro: 210kW single-motor, WLTP range of up to 544km
ID.4 GTX: 250kW dual-motor, WLTP range of up to 511km
ID.5 Pro: 210kW single-motor, WLTP range of up to 543km
ID.5 GTX: 250kW dual-motor, WLTP range of up to 522km

The ID.4 GTX brings all-wheel drive and a sportier design, while the ID.5 Pro offers a more affordable entry point to the coupe-style ID.5 lineup.

    Design & Body Style
    - ID.4: Traditional SUV styling with a more upright rear, offering better cargo space and rear headroom.
    - ID.5: Coupe-style SUV with a sleeker roofline, sacrificing some practicality for a sportier look.

    • Choose the ID.4 if you prefer more cargo space and practicality.
    • Choose the ID.5 if you want a sleeker, sportier design with a coupe-like roofline.
    • +2

Note also that the Cupra Tavascan, Skoda Elroq and Skoda Enyaq are all more or less the same car.

The Elroq in particular has been announced as being $59,990 drive away and I bet there will be individual dealers shaving another 2k or so off that. It's the one to get out of all of these ID4-based EVs.

      • It will be good if they position larger Enyaq at 60k drive away

We bought 2 Skoda cars and both were priced high, however the dealers sold demo units with 25 km on the odo for thousands less.

Instead of doing this song and dance with price of they launched a simpler drive away price, it’ll be easier.

    • +4

given the competitive market especially many more chinese EVs that are coming
its quite likely VW will drop their price in few months

    • +1

Wild prices given you're buying into the lowest tier of the VAG brands.

    • sportier design

Not something I would have said about it….

    • Great details. For 60k, I'd prefer the VW id4 (or anything else that's well made) on Tesla. Better feel and traditional drive. Not from Elon, and easy to own and use. Tesla is great in Tech, but in 2025 a HUD or a front screen is really a basic thing. Tesla is like the iPhone /apple if today unfortunately. Not to mention the trim levels, seats and general feel. I'd love to hear other experiences and see if anyone has id4 or drove it for more than my 25 minutes? BTW, the ID4 is not being even delivered to owners until July 2025, so that's one reason you do not see it on the road or hear any drivers experience.

  • Why does adding a second motor only get you at extra 40kw?!

    • +3

They don’t give you a second battery.

    • +1

Soft locked… to sell Cupras and Audis at much higher price points for the same but unlocked hardware

  • +4

I will buy VW charger if they give the car for free

    • +1

Then hang about… these are too expensive and Euro shitboxes. I give it 12 months and they will be begging people to take stock off their hands. (See Fiat and their 500e that was $60k because “Euro” and now they are begging people to buy them and they still have 2023 stock they can’t move with a $25k discount)

VW will discontinue these models in Australia and blame consumers not being ready for EV’s instead of blaming the pricing point and literally being eaten up by the Chinese compilation.

I say “good riddance” to legacy automakers. If they fail to adapt to the market and still want to plunder consumers pockets, then they deserve to disappear up their own arses.

  • +3

ID4 Pro has NO frunk, V2L, boot is visibly smaller than sealion 7 or model y, leather seats, ventilated seats, 'wired' Apple carplay/android auto. on a positive, range is good

    • not sure if it's the exact models mentioned in this post,

but in a review I heard that the VW ID model doesn't have instant acceleration when you press the pedal. instead it's like really polite and slowly goes. idk I heard nearly every EV under the sun has instant acceleration. maybe as you said has to do with getting better range? (stops young drivers driving it fast)

      • Yes, I tested it and can attest it's a bit more gentle start. I like it and it's not an issue for a family SUV. But if you press harder, it responds immediately. Close to a petrol gas pedal experience. I think that their design goal is to ease people into a new VW EV car, and have a moderate change that will not be overwhelming to regular VW Tiguan and other SUV drivers. For me it was a good drive. I'd recommend people who are interested in EV to test drive and compare it. In addition, I have to give credit to VW Fairfield, I came without an appointment and they helped me to test drive the ID4, and really gave me a nice professional sales and service experience. So many car owners prefer to have a real personal dealership vs an 'online experience' or a Tesla one. VW may plug into it and focus on this type of customers and their range of service centres And dealerships. Each to their own. In addition, much more important than the charger, if VW can offer a future trade in price guarantee, that could be a good incentive too.

        • I think that their design goal is to ease people into a new VW EV car, and have a moderate change that will not be overwhelming to regular VW Tiguan and other SUV drivers.

thanks for explaining. yes I think that is what one of the reviewers said, it feels more like a normal engine car probably to let people get used it to it easier.

I also heard somewhere that smashing the pedal on EV because it's addictive is an easy way to not get the km's advertised.

    • Luckily, you can easily compare boot sizes as the information is available. You are correct regarding the Y, but not byd. No need to say 'visibly smaller'. *Aka: The ID.4 has a larger boot space than the BYD Sealion 7, with 543 liters versus 500 liters. The ID.4 also offers more space with the seats folded down, going from 543 liters to 1,575-1,734 liters, while the Sealion 7's space is less clear. * . online info. BTW, the **wireless android comes in the VW ID.4 MY.24.5 **that comes in July so it will solve this issue.

    • Leather isn't a pro

  • +1

Save you Money and wait for the dust to settle as cheaper EV's are on their way in!

  • I've only ever driven a MG EV and Mercedes Benz EQA350

    how does the ID.4 compare?

  • Which brainiac thought up the ID.4 & ID.5 model numbers?

  • Is this what to expect in terms of discounts / add ons for a new EV? Shopping for an EV3.

  • +3

I would NEVER buy a EV from the old fossil auto industry.
A proper EV has more in common with a smart phone than an ICE vehicle.

    • I hope not! Hard to turn the car off and on again after a crash and reset it back to where it was unlike a phone.

    • Like Tesla?

  • Thanks, got one.
Will be able to use on our existing tesla also.
