Chinese-Made Bathroom, Kitchen Faucets Sold on Amazon Can Leach Lead, US Federal Agency Says

I just saw this article online and it got me thinking about my Amazon bought mixer/tap/faucet. Now I'm worried about the lead that I'm drinking :)

Anyone else recently bought a Chinese made Amazon tap?
My Ozbargain brain couldn't help but snag the cheap bargain but now I may be regretting it (I also didn't know 'lead-free' taps were a thing)
Does this actually matter or is it fear mongering?

This was an issue with ALDI tap products years ago. Nothing new here.

    2017 apparently

Right up there with the 2008 melmaine in Chinese baby formula scandal.

Maybe both. The wording of the article is definitely fear-mongering.

It only leaches into the water when sitting. Just run the tap for a bit if you haven't used it in a while.

    • Good advice. Especially for renters who can't do renovations to make safe their homes. The Lead Safe Group gives similar advice.

There's lots of lead containing crap being sold on Amazon and elsewhere. Sadly a lot of it is children's products and toys.

If I ran an authoritarian police state and wanted to be the world superpower and didn't want to fire a single shot and my country had taken over our enemies' manufacturing I might lace the products I sell to the enemy with lead and other toxins too.

    • Lucky we have agencies that tests products for consumer safety and have regulations on it. Unfortunately there are people who don't agree with the gov intervening with business' making money, including small ones importing dodgy toys.

      • Lucky we have agencies that tests products for consumer safety and have regulations on it.

Do you seriously think every single consumer product that comes into the country gets tested for lead, pthalates, other toxins?

        • Where does my comment say that or suggest that?

          Weird….

Is your take 100 or zero - either it works on every single thing, or don't even bother?

          • @Ughhh:

            Lucky we have agencies…

Perhaps I misunderstood the meaning of your comment.
I took it to mean that either we are lucky we are not Americans because we don't get toxic stuff in Australia because of our big daddy Government.

The Americans have agencies who do that too. Hence the CPSC recalls link I posted.

And if several thousand or more toxic lead containing items get sold and used by children before the item gets discovered (usually by random chance), then I would suggest thousands of kids are not so lucky. It's better than nothing whatsoever, but that's not saying much.

safety and have regulations on it.

And FWIW the Americans have tighter regulations on the presence of lead in food and children's products. So they're a bit luckier (using the 'lucky' concept as loosely as you).

  • If you are worried you can get your water tested.

And also get a blood test via your Gatekeeper Physician (GP), however a positive result could be from any number of sources.

  • Good thing I have a RO unit.

But I wouldn't worry about taps. There are a dozen things that are so much worse that deserve the attention

Btw brass often lead in it, so any old house with brass fittings is likely to have some lead leaching out. It's just that as long as the water isn't acidic, it's so low as to not be a concern.

  • I wonder if there is lead contaminated in the tap material or how it gets there.

Brass solder is a typical culprit.

      Ok?
This post is about Chinese manufactured faucets though

      • This post is about Chinese manufactured faucets though

        "some" Chinese manufactured faucets

It like a headline that says "Chinese cars may kill people" so do American cars.

I am pretty sure American food probably kills more Americans over the long term than lead from Chinese faucets or is this a setup to explain how unintelligent Americans have gotten?

Their strong American beef that is banned basically across the world. Yup. Taking out Chinese faucets won't MAGA.

        • "some" Chinese manufactured faucets

Sure. Doesn’t mean it isn’t worth discussing.
If a product is unsafe, it doesn’t matter where it’s made.
Not sure why everything has to be political. Even worse, it’s American politics.

@FireRunner: Aren't plumbing components sold in Australia supposed to carry the Watermark accreditation?
            https://watermark.abcb.gov.au/plumbers/lead-free-plumbing-pr…

That said, I can see cheap arse landlords & shit plumbers using cheap unaccredited components to cut corners

            • @Protractor: Yeah, it would be pretty unlikely to have one these lead faucets installed unless you DIY or got some real dodgy guy to install it.

              • @FireRunner: I'm not sure if my faucet is one of these lead ones since all of the ones on Amazon are simlar looking and probably drop shipped anyway.

And that's the exact reason why I was worried in the first place, I did get some real dodgy guy to install it. (it was me) :P

If you listen to the space cadets in charge of health, vaccines give you autism. Kennedy must have been injected with an Olympic swimming pool's worth. As long as they don't travel here, diseased up, I'm OK with their self annihilation.

      • Think the guy who replied before you (FireRunner) probably needs to check their faucet first. Obviously "irony" hasn't made it to their brain due to the lead.

  • Knock me over with a feather! Could also be fake news to align with Trumps anti China xenophobic psychosis . Since he was elected I would trust a single govt dept report. Musk has gutted all the brains and left all the MAGA minions in their place. The truth died in America when they voted for Trump.

    • Tomorrow's news "Chinese cars could kill pedestrians and cyclists"

We just forget to mention cars made elsewhere can too.

    • EDIT TYPO ABOVE ^

Since he was elected I would NOT trust a single govt dept report.

      • I joked with my partner that it was reported by a US agency but who knows these days it might be one guy in an office :S

        • Judging by the state of America,(esp current regime) I think lead poisoning has been impacting for decades. Ironically not a peep about the high speed lead poisoning ,though.
