Wollongong: What Is Your Life Experience There??

TL;DR: Middle 30s, have been lived in Sydney for the last 11y, I am tired of buildings and chaos, I am after greener places with rent that doesn't feel robbery.

I have been living here in Sydney for the last 11y, a lot of things changed to the worse and since I bought a Suzuki Jimny and started exploring around, I realised how bad things are, these are some of my points:

  • Toll: I went North just before Newcastle and the toll device beeps like a mf.
Going west isn't any better if not worse, I went to Glow Worm Tunnel and holy molly, the toll device goes "beep" "beep" "beep" "beep"

  • Rent: Increased to $800 a week. No words are needed.

  • Lack of nature: There is no many places you can go here to really enjoy nature. I mean, there is a park here and there but it is not the same as having Royal National Park as your neighbour.

  • Light Pollution: This has to do with above, for some time I have been trying to get into amateur astronomy/astrophotography, it is virtually impossible to do this here. You usually need 2-4h drive to get to "dark sky" place.
I went to see Parkes Telescope over Easter brake, just wow, I am so done with city sky.

  • Job: I work from home although offices are moving back to the office, urgh.
There is train in there will take ~2h everyday lost with transport but better life style and that matter.
Yes, I can drive/ride but I don't wanna depend on that unless you are telling me that it is faster to drive/ride to station X and then take the train from there. I will accept that if I cannot find a WFH role.

I am in my middle 30s, couldn't care less about the lack of parties, pubs ( I prefer to drink at home, it is cheaper and better quality cocktails ), I also have my hobbies so.
Supermarkets, I have pretty much ditched them, I prefer to buy meat from farms and veggies and stuff from open market, you can buy everything in bulk and cheaper from Amazon AU or stores like Sydney Solvents.
I am aware that Amazon Next Day delivery will be no more, and deliveries will take longer, that is fine.

I first thought about Newcastle area but if you have to drive to Sydney, there are endless tolls and the rent isn't much different, plus 3h or so by train give or take. A big no.
Also, it felt like forever to drive to The Entrance, Newcastle is another 1h or so further haha

I went past Wollongong over Easter, Kiama Heighs, once you reached Royal National Park, everything is so green, I cannot remember how many tolls I crossed if any meaning it was not even close compared with going west/north.
I just loved how peaceful things look and green in case I have not said green enough haha

Yes, I will take a weekend and spend there to feel the vibe but so far, it checks all the boxes.

Thank you very much.

    Sounds ideal for you.

The biggest consideration is having to travel to Sydney for work. The few people I know in the same situation drove and none of them could hack the drive 5 days/week long term. They didn't take the train because their office was not near a train station.

If you can WFH or get a job in the area, you'd be set.

The biggest consideration is having to travel to Sydney for work.

      It's only 80km

      • +8

In peak, it feels like 800km

        • Having a motorcycle helps a ton haha

    • Silly me didn't notice it was the Monday Easter break so the traffic was an inferno, worse than Sydney peak hour with everything just not moving, once I reached Royal National Park, everything went back to normal.

I don't mind if I have to go to the office once a week like what I do now, but I definitely wanna avoid full time office roles.

      Thank you for the share.

    I've never been.

    Beautiful area to drive through….

    • Better than drive by

    • lol….I see what you did there :)

  • +3

I've spent a couple of weeks there recently and it really does stand out to me just how many 'derros' there are there. It's like your Newcastle strand unique derro is the average guy there

    • No much different than Sydney then, homeless "everywhere", not where I am tho.
You might cross one or another but not enough to count like CBD.

      • +1

I didn't see many homeless in Wollongong at all, I more meant like the kind of people who get recorded going off on public transport

What are you going to do about work? Can you just pick up and move to another city? Work from home? If you WFH, I'd consider not just Wollongong, but all kinds of other places. Take a holiday and explore a bunch of small cities/large regional towns. There are heaps of beautiful places.

Also consider the community. Some places seem to have a nice sense of community, others don't. Hard to know how nice the community is unless you stay a while, although sometimes you can sense it immediately.

Coming from a large city to a smaller regional area, it might be difficult to find friends/community that you get along with and who share your interests. On the other hand, some smaller towns have much stronger, integrated communities than large cities. Really depends on the location.

    • Fair point, I can pick 4ssholes vibes by a kilometre away,
I do have planned to visit it, I just thought I would ask here for more insight of things I should keep a closer look into.

      Thank you

    You just need a holiday

    • +3

I had a 10 days break over Easter long weekend and that "holiday" is what made me realise what I am missing stuck "in the city" \o/

We moved to the Wollongong area 14 years ago from Manly, never looked back.
There are pro's and con's on everything depending on your circumstances.
Travel - Good train service all the way through to Bondi Junction. Three or four car routes to get into the city, some Tolls involved but depends on where you need to go, it's all about planning. The good thing is, if one route is blocked for traffic/accident etc you can use another easily (that is why we chose Wollongong over Terrigal).
Bush - Lots of bush walking areas and beaches, you could have a very active outdoor life here and the night sky is still glorious given the right conditions.
Food and Drink - Good restaurants throughout the Illawarra area of differing tastes, a thriving craft beer scene and some good wine bars. As with all places, there are some venues I won't go near for demographic reasons.
House prices - Obviously cheaper than Sydney but still not 'cheap'. Not sure about rents but we did rent for our first 3 years and it was cheaper than Sydney.
People - Some good, some not so good, again just like all areas. A lot of family's ingrained over time and have a thriving network of friends etc.
The question we always ask ourselves is, if we won a multi million Lotto jackpot would we stay here, the answer is a resounding yes.

    • Thank you so much for sharing that, IMHO I only read good things haha

To be honest, the way how everything is going to shit, buying a house is not something I have in mind.
I mean, spend the next 30y of my life in fears with everything going up, mortgage going up or keep saving monthly so by the time I have a decent amount, I can almost buy a house "in cash" but by then, it will be even more expensive.

Yeah, this is a Pandora box that I am not willing to open just yet.

We moved to the Blue Mountains 20 years ago for similar reasons and it has been great.
The only hesitation I’d suggest is if you are single and don’t want to be, Sydney is a much bigger pool. Wollongong is 5 times bigger than the mountains, but all the single people I know tell me everyone has run out of local options pretty quickly.

    • +1

To be honest, I am fine with that.

but all the single people I know tell me everyone has run out of local options pretty quickly

Listen to them with a grain of salt!!!!

I was in a 6y long term relationship, what I got from that?? Stress, drama, paying for everything, you name it.
The only good thing, two actually, left are the cats. I work in IT so WFH since COVID hit, I just got used to them and vice versa.

Because of dating apps, social media and easy sex, relationship as you know it is gone.
Even married folks into their dozens of years married together are filing for divorce because they, the same gender across the board, think that they can find a better partner only to realise that the neighbours grass isn't always greener.

I have been single by choice for 1y now, I have my hobbies, the cats ( I was always a dog guy but love these cats more than anything), I've my car and motorcycle if I get bored, relationship is one of the fewest things I wanna stay the hell away from.

Thank you for the share tho.

And subsequent rise in STD rates.

Spend time down there as Wollongong has its patches of nice areas and rough bogan parts of it

A friend of mine had the same experience as you when she was visiting and was dead set keen on moving, she spent a bit more time there and after a few solid days there was ‘no thank you’

    • "No thank you", I laughed hahaha
Yeah, every single place will have its goods and bads, just need to find the balance.

Around Sydney, Eastern Suburbs is the "perfect" balance IMHO, but not everywhere within this area.
Unless you can buy a private island, there is no perfect place haha

If commuting to Sydney, friends of mine drive from Wollongong to Sutherland and then train it to central. Cuts out the slow part of the train journey.
North of Wollongong city is nicer then south. South of W'gong is closer to the steel works so i would avoid.
Thirroul / Austinmer / Bulli are the nicer beach suburbs but are expensive. Stay away from Bellambi (government housing)
In and around the Uni is nice as is Balgownie, Fairy Meadow, Mt Plesant, Towradgi.
Unlike Sydney, you don't really get traffic so getting from Dapto to Thirroul only takes 30min.
If your not planning on going to Sydney often then head further south towards Shellharbour (Family oriented), Kiama (pretty slow)

That works for me. I was even thinking about Waterfall station which I found by accident trying to find waterfall within the park haha
But if they can get even further, it is even better.
It is funny you mentioned that because I first thought about Sutherland/Kirrawee area but the rent isn't much different and won't solve my problem with amateur astronomy, coz I would still have to drive a ton to Wattamolla or something with terrible road carrying expensive equipments so I dropped the idea.

If your not planning on going to Sydney often then head further south towards.

I am really not planning on going to Sydney, I am literally 10min away from it by motorcycle and can count how many times I have been there since WFH started in 2019/2020.
I am sorting out moving from work within the coming months

      Shellharbour (Family oriented)

That is very good to know, I have had enough of dramas haha and I prefer family oriented events, idk it just feels more relax and you enjoy more.
And one of the reasons I don't get out is because I cannot stand drunk people, if somebody tells me they need to get high on alcohol and drugs to enjoy life, something is very wrong haha and this is very limited within family oriented areas.

Thank you so much for sharing that :)

  • Turn on avoid tolls on your GPS app. I have never used the glow worm tunnel or LCT going north

    • +1

I am only exploring around during the weekends, skipping tools mean driving way way more so less time enjoying.
Glow Worm Tunnel requires 4WD, normal car will have a hard time.

  • can't wait to GTFO of Sydney one day.

Down south is going to be my Destination, probably Shellharbour area

    • Shellharbour is prob the best part of NSW?

      • Windang down to Kiama and beyond

  • south coast is a nice place…. TO VISIT! I wouldn't want to live down there, even if i didn't like city life or crowds. I would put up with living in Sydney to appreciate the proximity Sydney has to everything, rather than move to south coast.. if Sydney is too expensive, and you don't like the chaos.. then move interstate… or even overseas… then you'll know u have it quite good in Sydney

  • Amazon next day delivery is not being cancelled

Sounds like you've made up your mind. Just go for it.

Sydney does not offer anything to anyone unless you bought property 20yrs ago.

  • Just one more point, I made the change many years ago - would not go back to capital city/suburbs.

Until I was setup up work wise locally, I had a 2+ hour commute.

In Winter, I left in the dark, and got home in the dark - as a tradie/tech there was no WFH. Yes, I had my M/C, but dealing with the F Wits commuting (I had to cross to the other side of the CBD for work), meant I mostly settled on public transport.

My 2c…Good luck. Sounds like you've made your mind up.

  • 1:25 on the train Wollongong to Central isn't terrible, but as someone who used to do Bargo (Southern Highlands) to Central it gets grating pretty quickly when you're doing it 5 days a week. If you could WFM 1/2/3 days a week it would make it more tolerable of course!

Of all the people I know that have lived far away and travelled to the office only a few made sense (to me at least).

If you really really really want to live by the beach, surf every day and/or go outside and enjoy the location, then the travel can be worth the trade off.
If you only do that on weekends… well, why not travel on the weekend to your destination and live closer to work?

Or if you have to live further away because you can't afford closer… well travel is a necessary evil.
