I've been waiting on this sale for a while - Meross has just released their new overhauled mini-Wifi and Matter plugs which are significantly smaller and compact than the old model. They're about half the size and can be double stacked next to each other and don't block any power points which is a huge win.

I bought some a few weeks back and they've been running great for managing my heaters in various rooms to keep my power bill down. Also fantastic for keeping an eye on energy usage in winter with the energy monitor function or managing lights in rooms after hours.

They also have a Matter plug too for HomeKit users, it's a little more at $49.99 with multi-platform and native Matter support support for those who want it.

Is it worth buying these smart plugs without matter support right now?

    • +1

Depends on how you want to setup your home. If you use Google Cloud or are happy operating the plugs just through the meross app (you can setup automations in there) then the basic plugs will do fine.

If you want to use HomeKit with your iPhone then the Matter plugs are probably more flexible going forward.

    • Is their Matter version Matter over Thread or just Matter over Wifi? If the latter I will pass.

  • Does size really matter?

    • +1

      Yes

    • +1

Yes. The old ones are so big that you can't thread something past them into the second socket on a double powerpoint.

    • 😂 😂 😂

    • -1

      whoosh
Yep, I know, I have 4 of them, I immensely dislike them because they're so fat. Use them standalone atm.

  • Newbie question are these much better than the various other brands that get posted up and regularly die after a couple of years in some cases, click of death, etc. (luckily my couple of dead ones just stopped switching completely)

Because those have been small form factor already for a while to not block the adjacent plug.

    • +4

I've been running meross plugs for years now and haven't had any issues with them. Some brands like Arlec have had their issues, and I know an earlier meross unit had an issue but they made a change to their supplier and it was fixed in around 2022.

This one was redesigned hardware wise so it's an entirely different unit to their previous ones. I've been very happy with their products so far.

      • +2

Anecdotally, I bought the chunky meross smart plugs a few years ago and 3 out of 4 have died.

        • Yep that might have been the capacitor failure mentioned if you bought pre-2022. You can contact support and they might be able to swap them. Apparently it was a capacitor supplier that had an issue, they changed suppliers and post-2022 has been fine.

I'd reach out to them via Amazon and see if there's anything they can do for you.

          • @JSONBourne: Do you recall if it was early or late 2022? I am in the same boat…Bought a 4 pack of those chunky ones in July 2022 and have had 3 or all 4 of them all died. However I didn't think they would still be covered under warranty so didn't keep them and threw them out. Do you think I could contact them without the original product? Thank you.

            • +1

@Travelling panda: I'm not sure to be honest I don't have the exact specifics. But try reaching out to them on Amazon, their support is usually pretty good at swapping out things or offering help.

          • @JSONBourne: @JSONBourne what about 2022?
I bought mine via Amazon 21 November 2022 4 pack, Meross Smart Plug WiFi Outlet
It's been fine up until now, daily use.

            • +1

@Lord Ra: If it's fine you might have a batch that has a good capacitor. This didn't happen to all units. They just had one supplier in their supply chain who had the issue, in which case it probably would be known by now. So fingers crossed you're all fine!

    • +3

I had 12 TPLink ones, a mix of full size and compact ones. Eight of them have now died, most of them the compact ones. I've since switched to full size Meross ones, but haven't had them long enough to see if they'll face a similar fate. Didn't know they introduced compact ones, I'll keep them on my radar.

      • Oh no (I've invested in a lot of the TP-Link Kasa compact plugs).
Which ones did you have and what happens when they die?

        • I've had 4 Kassa for years now, they haven't died on me.

One is running the fridge for power monitoring and has no issues.

        • I had 4 out of 6 die on me. When they get the click of death they start power cycling very fast … anything plugged in to them will have a rough time (its how my 7.2 receiver died)

My advice, rip them all out … it's not worth the risk.

          • @evilphill: I second this. It's destroyed my trust in using any smart plugs in case they enter pairing mode and start switching whatever they are plugged in to on and off unattended.

        • Review with a video showing click of death. I must stress this issue is wide spread across multiple products.

Considered how wide spread this issue is, my "guess" is the reference design provided by the chipset maker might not be accurate enough. It is a blown capacitor issue.

        • +1

I've had 6x full size and 6x compact plugs. Of the compact plugs, one is still working, most of them failed within 2-3 years. The full size ones fared much better. They were the first ones I bought and some started to fail after 4 years. I have three of them still working.

When they start to fail, they may not respond to commands from the app, and they may click on and off intermittently. You'll definitely know when they've completely died as they'll rapidly be clicking on and off non-stop, and the power/Wi-Fi light does the same. For the full size ones, there isn't really any audible click, but you still see the light rapidly flashing.

    • -1

After one of mine (another brand) had click of death, I don't trust them any more. I also read reports a few people experiences click of death of my TP-Link ones (doesn't feel good knowing they will most likely fail after a while).

My failed one had energy monitoring and USB ports concern me. So far, for mine, the more features they have, the higher chance of failure. I have another one which starts to play up as well.

      • Yeah my tp link had click of death recently :( sucks

    • +1

I've heard that none of these last if they frequently turn on and off. Seems to be true as I've never seen a brand that people say "this one lasts for years!". Let's see how these newly designed ones go…

      • +1

Yep smart plugs have a relay in them that have a lifespan of uses. As long as you aren't toggling every 5 minutes it should be fine to last for years.

        • Are there high quality relays that can handle frequent toggling better? I wonder if make your own ESP32 version with a quality relay could be a good option.

          • @bleeder: Not really, I don't say this as a fault but more to say that just don't toggle them every 5 minutes and they should last forever. I have some original Kasa units that would probably be coming up on 6-7 years old and they are still fine.

I probably wouldn't mess with an ESP32 and a 240V supply. Things could go quite wrong if you accidentally create a loop or the relay doesn't fully operate. You'd probably spend more on hardware anyway vs $15/unit.

            • +1

@JSONBourne: Yeah that does sound scary haha. I am just wondering if there are options for people that do want to toggle them every 5 minutes. I don't actually have a use for that, more a matter of interest.

        • Are there any energy only ones? I don't care to relay but I want to know about energy

          • @aong152: Nope they're either relay or relay + energy monitoring. The new plugs are both all models, you just choose whether you want matter support as well.

        • I'm not sure if frequency of use makes much difference. One of the first ones to fail for me was one I used for energy monitoring the fridge, rather than for turning on and off. I also haven't really seen any correlation between frequency of use and failure rate for the others that I used for switching things off at certain times or when nobody's home, etc.

      • Ive had both tplink kasa and the newer ones die.
Had one on a fridge that was never turned off. it developed the clicking. Thought it killed my fridge.
Changed the capacitor on one and got it back, another didn't recover.

    • +2

I've been running mine into a hot water tank (heat pump that draws a sustained peak of ~800W once running) for at least a few years now. Set to turn on an hour after runrise, and off 1 hour before sunrise. Has been working flawlessly since.

    • +1

I have been using the bigger version and within the warranty period I got 5 out of 6 replaced, after the warranty period 3 went in the bin. The one which was never replaced, failed in February this year, after 4 years…

      • Sounds like you might have purchased right around the issue they had. I purchased a batch around 3 years ago, and some last year and have had 0 issues so far.

      • +1

Yep I had 4 of the bigger ones, and all failed within a couple of months of each other late last year - bout 3 years old. Since moved to Tapo P110M

        • same still have some older TPlink ones which are now 8 years old, havent missed a beat. bought some Tapo P110M recently

  • Is anyone aware of a 15a version of any smart plug with Australian plugs? I've searched high and low to no avail…

    • +1

I assume for EV charging? If so not that I've seen. You'll also have to be careful with that as most plugs aren't rated for sustained 15A loads. Same as standard extension cords.

      • Yeah EV charging was the plan, looks like a full house monitoring setup in the switch box is likely the path forward, but really wanted it for EV for the most part

        • Yep I'm in the same boat. You can do it on an 8A load, but any higher and I'd probably be looking at something like Shelly in your switchboard to have it be robust. EV charging is unique in that it can go for hours-days at a time.

          • @JSONBourne: Yup my tp link is doing fine for last month but it's 10a. Also slightly concerned it'll blow up with sustained 9ish amps my granny charger pulls. Ideally I was a 15a PowerPoint so I can get a slightly better charger, but want it monitored for novated lease claims.

            • +1

@cook99: Apparently people have done this combo for years without issues, but I would probably put a smoke detector nearby just in case. Peace of mind!

      • safer to change to smart breaker like tuya
        https://amzn.asia/d/4VULy0U

        • Is there an equivalent to this that’s a local brand? I always get nervous with Tuya and HV.

        • safer until you run in to trouble for using something that isn't AU certified..

    • Is your charger ocpp compatible?

      • Nah just the crappy 10a basic on that came with the car. I'd like to buy a 15a to get a small bump in speed. Don't need the full speed option.

  • Do you need internet connection for the real time power monitoring or can it work offline via Bluetooth like with the scheduling?

Want to monitor a dehumidifier in my basement but wifi doesn't reach down there.

    • +1

It can work offline via Wifi. These units are good in that they don't require cloud unless you're away from home. When home all communication is local only via Wifi.

But the Bluetooth AFAIK is just for pairing, not actual data transmission.

    • +4

Just turn off the dehumidifier. Your captive in the basement won't mind.

      • +4

I need it stop all the junk I bought on ozbargain from getting rusty :(

        • +1

Oh mate, I get that. That's why I'm trying to sell everything before it goes bad.

    • +2

You need to click the 20% Coupon button then it should come down

  • Does anyone know how much energy it uses on standby?

    • I'd estimate about 1-2W. Very small.

      • +6

My car used that much following the garbage truck back home this morning

  • Anyone have experience integrating these with Home Assistant and can speak to the quality of the plugin here?

    • +4

I have a couple of the earlier (bigger) plugs, and they are working fine with this plugin.

      • Does it integrate directly to HA without having to use a proprietry app?

        • I integrate mine via the Matter or Homekit add-on. It works flawlessly, you just need to buy the Matter plug to do so and it runs natively that way.

          • @JSONBourne: With just Matter can you get energy stats now? From my googling needs latest firmware but I can only see US mentioned.

        • I think only if you are using the Matter ones like @JSONBourne mentioned. For other non-Matter/Homekit devices, you have to set them up in the Meross app first so they are registered with the cloud, then you authorise the HA plugin to get the device info from the cloud initially, then after that all communication is done locally, afaik.

      • Also using the linked Meross LAN plugin, seems to work well.

    • I think the answer is yes. No personal experience, but given the dearth of not working reports, I googled "mqtt MSS305", I'm taking the gamble.

  • +1

Little bit off topic, but are there any good quality zigbee smart plugs? Would be handy to use as a router in zigbee network.

    • +3

I've just been getting the 4-packs of these offbrands from ali - they do the job, connect to the mesh with no issues, and act as repeaters.
Jury's still out on how long they last (i.e. the "good quality" part of your question) as I've only had them for 3 months, but there's no immediate sign that they're worse quality than the other smart plugs I've sampled over the years.

      • I've got a few things like that of Ali, wonder how long they're going to last, but at that price point it's worth the risk. Just purchased an automatic curtain driver, really hoping it works. $50 vs the $150 Aqara it's worth a try. Went with a 'choice' seller so I can return it if any issues. Looks like there's no existing Zigbee2MQTT config for it either, I'm hoping that's not too hard to set up myself.

        • I assume that's for a rails curtain? Been looking for something to manage my pole curtains, but can't quite justify the price for the switchbot, with how many units I'd need.

          • @chossenger: Yeah for a rails curtain, I'm a bit worried because they say they only work for I rail or U rail, but mine is a weird shape like a sideways U. Also you need to have the ones with little wheels, I think mine has wheels but it's hard to see so not 100% sure. I've watched the installation video for the Aqara that functions the same and it seems like it will work. But then the next concern is will it integrate to HA. All of it is worth a shot for $50. If it works I'm buying 4 more of them.

This is the one I got, they offer a 'roman pole' version, I presume that just means regular pole? lol.

            https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008196273403.html?spm=a2…

            • @bleeder: Ah, so they do - kinda clever to just use the same device with an adaptor for the pole.
Still works out surprisingly pricey per window if you've got curtains drawing from both sides though - might just have to bite the bullet

              • @chossenger: For me this sort of automation is worth the money, if it works. Hopefully it works though…

        • I have both, the moes curtain drivers are almost identical to the Aqara. Would get the moes one again to save money in the future.

          • @JSONBourne: Good to know, how are you integrating? I presume not Zigbee2MQTT?

If this thing works for my bedroom curtain I will be extremely happy, we actually have a nice view but just keep it shut all the time due to laziness, I think this would be one of the best things to automate. Also would be great to get some natural light in the room. If it works well I'll be buying 4 more for my other rooms.

            • @bleeder: Yep via Zigbee2MQTT, this is the product I'm using. My only problem with this unit is it doesn't report battery %, otherwise it's identical to the Aqara unit.

I have a rather large blind that's 2.4m wide and it takes it fine if you have it plugged into power. It still works on battery, but with a larger blind battery life is about 3-4 months.

              • @JSONBourne: Ah, I've ordered the one that opens and closes curtains not blinds. Had a look on the Zigbee2MQTT site and it's not there, but I checked their steps for adding one yourself and it doesn't seem too difficult. I plan on getting a blinds one too at some stage if the curtain ones all go well, will probably get the Moes one you linked.

  • Can they be MQTT converted?

  • +1

Is it me, or are all the reviews "great product except it failed after one year, but the company was great to deal with and sent a replacement - 5 stars"

  • Thanks OP, been waiting for these for Winter. Stacked with PRIME10JOIN for another $10 off.

  • Can anyone provide a recommendation between this or Tapo? I can’t find reasons to distinguish between them. I can’t lean one way or another and have both and want to have only one and get rid of the other

    • I've been using the tapo mini matter ones (110m?) for a few years now and no issues. One of them is switching a 1800W load a couple times a day.

  • What are people using these for as part of home automation these days? I have a few similar energy monitoring ones I used to use but most things seem smart enough these days I don't have the need to control the 240v power itself. I have one that lives with the Christmas tree so I don't need to set it up again each year, it turns the lights on and off at set times (or with voice command via Google home) but that's it now days.
Keen to get more out of them.

    • HA automations, eg:
When (pool or garage) battery < 46v turn off, when battery > 50v turn on.
      Or
When workshop humidity > 60% and garage (solar production - consumption) > 800W turn on dehumidifier.

    • +1

      Heaps of stuff:

      • Turning on and off heaters to prewarm rooms in the morning or turn off when I leave the house
      • Toggle lights on and off in the house, also helpful when you go on holidays and want to toggle based on a timer
      • Add to dishwasher/washing machine/dryer and see when your cycle has finished be notified (via energy monitoring)
      • Turn off Electric Blanket after a few hours so it doesn't stay on all night. Mine is always 12hrs on by default.
      • Toggle on Garage light when I open the garage door. Turn it off after 20 minutes.
      • Toggle EV Charger or track energy usage

These are some of mine. I've got almost everything hooked in. When I go to bed at night everything in the house turns off and the house manages itself. Same as when on holidays.

      • Do you mind clarifying the third bullet for me please, sounds like you can set up alerts where energy usage changes by X amount, or goes from being non-zero to zero? That’s exactly what I’m looking for but others I’ve tried haven’t worked, appreciate your help.

        • +1

I have the plug connected into HomeAssistant which is a platform where you can setup automation. An automation I setup was to check for energy levels, to see if it goes above 0, and then back to 0 and that indicates that something has happened. It then sends me a notification.

Out of the box however I don't think this is a feature typically available in the meross app at least automatically, but you could always open the app to manually check the current energy usage.

But if you don't mind tinkering delving into HomeAssistant can give you a lot of possibilities for custom workflows like this.

    • +1

I've got one on a lamp in the bedroom, that has a non-standard bulb. I've got one for the sandwich press, which doesn't have power controls on it - able to turn it on or off while leaving plugged into the powerboard, or control with voice.

Also very good to have if you have any number of things that go up at Christmas, especially dumb lights. One powerboard plugged into one of these to turn the whole room off is very handy (also scheduled on).

  • +2

    Meross stuff is damn reliable.

  • +1

I really want some of these for energy monitoring but the meross app seems to require an account and access to location. Anyone know if there is a way to set these up 100% local start to finish?

    • +1

If you're using iOS the location perm is just so that the App can access wifi details and help transmit them to the plug for first time setup. It's due to a restriction in iOS. I usually just set precise location to off and allow once, and from that point onwards deactivate it.

As for user account that's a yes, as this is so the plugs are bound to just you as a user I imagine and can be used away from home.

  • can these be added to the smart life Tuya app? a few things on the net say no, but they seem like they might be Tuya clones
