[NSW] Free Train Travel on Monday 26/5/2025 @ Sydney Trains

1420

Sydney commuters will travel for free on Monday after Sydney’s train chaos.

Acknowledging the state government had to “get better”, NSW Premier Chris Minns said fares would be waived on that day to help compensate people out of pocket because of the major disruptions yesterday and today.

“In no way is that going to make up for the disruption of the last 24 hours, but hopefully it can go some way to alleviate the financial burden that families have had to deal with over the last day,” Minns told 2GB.

today it's pushing pressure on the road, when normal road takes 10mins and today it takes more than 20mins, what's the tradeoffs here?

      • +3

Sydney metro was absolutely pumped last night and this morning. There's about a 25minute traffic just to drop someone off

      • +1

well I can't bear the road traffic either. WFH all the way

    • Yes, helicoptor to the building is also my preferred form on transport.

  • +7

Does it include free bus, metro and light rail and ferry too on Monday? Or only trains

  • Noob question. Can we use Apple Pay (saved in Apple Wallet) to pay for train or public transport rides?

    • +6

      oh this is definitely boss buddy => {username.checkout}

yes you can boss, Sydney Train will take everything from you, cash card credit card, your wife, ex, etc.

      • -1

This was a serious question bro

    • +1

Yes… been using them for a decade .. I mean using debit card or Apple Watch or phone

      • -1

        Ok thanks!

Sorry another noob question. Does that mean Apple Pay (on Apple Wallet) can be used for any other purchases as well like coffees at cafes, groceries at Colesworth, clothing at Myer etc.?

        • +1

Yes. You just use as if you would normally use your card.

          • +1

@noodlez543: Agree and iloverullprice, yes you can. I’ve been using it for a decade now started with my Apple Watch paying all with it, remember it was Woolies metro my first experience on an afternoon hahaha 10 years ago nearly …
You can also put multiple cards on apple wallet and also set a default card for payment and also “express pay option” it’s very quick payment … also if you wish to use another card and not the default, you can switch choose and pay

You get all discounted fairs same as opal card too in transport… but remember, you should tap on and off using same channel for discounts or count, I mean, for example, if you use your phone to pay in public transport then use the same to tap off for that journey and also to claim day cap etc … if you use watch then use only that. Otherwise you don’t get the discount rules calculations correctly. But you can use any card in wallets

Also, to see those real time hour y and cost, create a free account in transportconnect website and set up these debit cards you use to pay. Automatically transactions appear there in 1-2 hours from journey time and you can see transactions done through your phone or watch

          • @noodlez543: Great thanks!

To enable Express Mode on your iPhone

Open your Wallet app and select the card you want to use
Tap the More button on the top right (displayed as three dots), then tap Card Details
Tap the Express Travel settings or Express Mode
Select the credit or debit card you want to use to pay for your travel

    • +1

Yes, any tap capable Amex, Mastercard, Visa (including phone emulated) works. Including in Apple Watch.
Just make sure the same card and app/device is used each end otherwise thats 2 max fare tickets charged.

      • Sorry what’s phone emulated?

        • The phone NFC chip being a credit card

  • +3

Meanwhile, biz are ordering people to return to office at least 3 days per week 🤡

  • +3

i wonder if you still tap on and off as I need to register a trip to access the commuter car park

    • Unlikely, in the past for Park+Ride they usually leave the gate open. You may need to request a refund if you use Transport Connect though.

    • +2

Last time 'free travel' was a large concert during which free travel was included in the ticket. Got billed for commuter carpark, took me almost 2 weeks and about 4 emails to get it sorted.
Hardly worth the 'saving'. Should be integrated, or a simple process.
I'll be avoiding Monday for this reason, less paperwork!

      • ah i figured as much - i might just tap on and off rather than deal with the hassle

        • News mentioned that gates on metro/trains will be open, meaning you can't tap ON/OFF.

Last time I got into similar situation (emergency on metro station > gates were open) I needed to call parking support phone so they could let me out manually, as gate was reporting that it didn't detect the valid opal card tap off.

      • Yeah it's not a great implementation when using Transport Connect. It can't work out whether you have actually travelled in the moment so it just opens the gate and records it for later processing. If you're not registered for Transport Connect, the procedure is to press the assistance button and explain to the operator, which is slightly better but still annoying.

Moved from Sydney this year.. trains is something i do not miss.

    • +4

Technically, if they are not running, then you miss them…

  • +2

    Transport Poo South Wales :)

  • My card charged full fare yesterday after no tap off. can we get a refund for that fare?

I will just stay home not playing this free travel monday.

    • Most certainly. Just call them up and let them know about it. It was a fairly easy process when I still used public transport a year or so back.

    • Yep, go to https://www.opal.com.au/en/customer-care and submit an enquiry under the type "Complaint - Opal Fares", you'll get a refund in a few days.

    • I think the deal starts next week.

  • +1

Corporate is the most miserable place I've ever worked at - 20 Years of contracting experience

    Run like a backdoor operation

  • +2

you've already paid, with your time for this

  • +1

They should just cap the week instead as if you use it daily, you'll be no better off than you were the week before.

Make it a $25 cap for that week.

  • Totally makes up for every fault

  • +1

Nice - got the day off on Monday, will pop into town.

  • +3

what about buses? i literrally couldn't use my bus due to the overload from the trains people!!

  • The public transport fiasco day was a missed opportunity for the perpetually protesting groups of every persuasion. The stage was set for them. Stopped traffic and angry faces already there. They just needed to turn up and do their gig.

  • +2

The disruptions are so frequent here while other states offer 50c ticket or $10 daily cap every day, this is more like a humiliation than an apology imo.

  • +3

why can't just refund whoever used public transport yesterday?

    • +3

Second that. Those impacted the most (those who travelled on today or yesterday) should get a refund.

Is it wrong to consider this a case of fee for no service just like what financial services industry got themselves into trouble?

  • +1

I learned a hard lesson yesterday. Never tap until you actually see a train approaching!

  • Not even if they paid me. I pity the kids who take trains to school. Almost makes boarding school seem good.

  • If u r lucky, and if u find the train, catch up

  • I know it says Sydney Trains but will this work for the light rail?

    • +1

doesn't matter; no revenue enforcement officer will be out on Monday.

  • +1

We deserve free train travel for a year with how hopeless Cityfail is

  • what caused it?

I don't watch the news, I think I heard about a high voltage power line fell onto the track is it related?

kind of worrying are they doing maintenance properly? being in a giant connected metal box with metal on the inside and a high voltage wire falling onto the tracks or train doesn't sound good..

I mean free is nice but if above is true maybe not the best time to catch the train if you don't have to..

    • -1

It's always a signal failure, person on the tracks, sick person, rain, heat, industrial action.
      Play bingo and pick one.

Half the time I don't believe their explanation. Seems they just fail at preventative maintenance or the network is that bad that it's just constantly failing and no amount of maintenance will matter.

  • +2

    <laughs in Brisbane>

  • +1

Chris Minns etc keep saying it’s a complex system then how do other major cities in the world do it?

Complete breakdown of a train network is almost unheard of in other nearby cities like Singapore, HK, Tokyo etc

  • +2

If they really wanted to make it up to the people who were suffering with this appalling service then they would have given free transport on the same days that had the issues for the following week. Not on the day where they know most people work from home and there's the least amount of commuters. We are not stupid and this is an insult.

  • +4

We can't avoid the scenario in Sydney where a single line break can lead to complete chaos. The system's design is centralized at central station, with everything relying on one main station. to change lines, you typically just need to walk a minute to a different platform.

In contrast, if you've been to Japan, you might have noticed that switching lines often requires a bit of walking between completely different stations, sometimes even crossing the street. This is an effective system, as losing one line doesn’t disrupt everything.

  • +1

I think the Sydney Train is a national embarrassment and will be one of the main factors in the NSW elections next year. Looks like there is simply not enough money in the system to fix this regardless of Labor or Liberals in the NSW state.

    • +1

NSW state elections are every 4 years

      • Thanks 2027 then :) Minns have plenty of time to make it right

  • -2

and they want a 30% payrise

piss off and hope you get replaced by automation

  • +1

Should be free for a week or two. this is half arsed at best.

  • This is like 10th disruption to train this year laden with tech issues, union, strikes etc etc A free fare day is just not good enough. That's how they think about the commuters, a waived $10 fare is a good enough gesture and compensation. Is this a joke? At this point the syd train needs a major restructuring as it is simply not working across the board. People will end up choosing to buy a car (not by choice but as necessity), catching uber spending $$$$, so they can get to work/home reliably, and bam get a free travel day. Get real.

  • Im just wondering how a train tangled overhead wiring

  • Metro also free?

    • Yes

  • So, nothing to compensate fare dodgers for the poor service then? Typical! Oh, wait…

  • They should just refund 1.5x the fair they charged everyone who travelled on the days of disruption. Easy and fair as ONLY the people who got AFFECTED get compensated. They certainly have the data to be able to do this, so it shouldn't be hard to implement.

  • Do we still need to tap on/off?

    • +1

They have announced that the gates will be open so no tapping on will be necessary.
