[NSW] Free Train Travel on Monday 26/5/2025 @ Sydney Trains

1833

Sydney commuters will travel for free on Monday after Sydney’s train chaos.

Acknowledging the state government had to “get better”, NSW Premier Chris Minns said fares would be waived on that day to help compensate people out of pocket because of the major disruptions yesterday and today.

“In no way is that going to make up for the disruption of the last 24 hours, but hopefully it can go some way to alleviate the financial burden that families have had to deal with over the last day,” Minns told 2GB.

Doesn't really help people where Monday is their work from home day…

Pretty sure they crunched the numbers to select the day that the least number of people use the service…

    • +172

a true ozbargainer will just work from the train that day.

      Get your money's worth.

      • +33

ozb meetup on the 9:56 from central station?

        • -2

I would love to meet you if you are ..

            @imYourBossFenny: I'd love your meat

@imYourBossFenny: It aint Mrs Horty if that's what you wanted

          • +4

            @imYourBossFenny: ASL first please?

            • @McMaferMur: Let’s just say I’m exactly what you were hoping for — but better ;-)

              • @imYourBossFenny: Oh nooo im having a very naughty thought right now

                • @McMaferMur: I’d ask what it is, but I already have my emergency “Nope” button ready—just in case. 😂

                  • @imYourBossFenny: Hey dont turn the chicken off before it hatches! Who knows my offer is a life changing kind of thing.

                    • @McMaferMur: Haha, tempting pitch—but I don’t usually sign up for “life-changing” offers without a user manual and a return policy 😉 and ; keep my life changes under tight - security and with a multi-step vetting process 😜 but I’ve got a sixth sense that says I won’t be penciling that into my destiny 😂. But hey, you knew my answer before you hit send. But points for creativity. 😄

                • @McMaferMur: somebody is going to get railed…

I returned home by my local Metro 11pm last night, and the gates were already powered down and open, instead of just setting cost to zero, with handmade signs about the free day. So I'm now wondering if I will incur some sort of fee for not tapping out on exit properly at the end of my journey.

      • If you're not attending the Sydney Train Rodeo you're not getting your money's worth.

        • look at all the dog shit on that seats from the shoes. would think twice before sitting on any of those, rather stand on the metro.

    • +6

      o the joys of CityFail… I mean cityRAIL…

      • +2

Lol they stop calling it CityRail over a decade ago

        • +11

it will always be cityfail to me no matter how they change it. because everything they do always fails

          • @kungfuman: CitySnail was also somewhat popular for a brief period in the late '90s I think? Because all e timetables were slowing down.

            • @barcer: Catch the metro is so frequent it doesn't even need a timetable.

        • +2

          i never will

        • +1

          It's SRA for me …

        • +3

          Shitney Trains

        • About the same time they stopped describing it as a train service……almost a perfect oxymoron 🤔

      • +18

I much preferred calling it ShittyRail

        • I call it Shitney Rail

    • +9

Pretty sure they crunched the numbers to select the day that the least number of people use the service

      it would've been Friday then

      • +3

Anyone who actually uses Sydney trains Mon-Fri knows this

    • +2

I would expect Friday is the most popular WFH day. They probably should make fare free day for the whole week.

      • +1

Did you invent the light? Thomas alwa Edison shortly Edison are you?

      • nope, actually Friday and Monday are the least popular

    • +2

"crunched the numbers to select the day that the least number of people use the service"

NSW government is saving tax payers money.

      • +1

NSW government is saving tax payers money.

        The duality of @jv…

      • +1

NSW government is saving tax payers money.

They've taken money from people who paid for a service and not provided what they paid for…

        • +3

They have taken alot of money from my PAYG, but a lot of services not provided for too.

Wonder how the credit card charge back dispute will work in scenarios like this.

      • +2

bahahahaha NSW government wouldn't know a train was up them till the people got out.

    • +3

And that's white I love working in the office on Monday. Peaceful

      • +2

Kind of defeats the point of working from the office…

      • +2

        "that's white"

        Monday blues?

        • +4

          Wednesday Dyslexia **

    • +2

the day that the least number of people use the service would be Friday

      • -1

        Mondays and Fridays are similar.

    • -1

Big doubt Monday is a meeting day

      • +1

        On 'Teams'…

    • +5

It's f'ed today so reward the people who commute on Wednesday's, not Monday's. FFS.

100% agree, they crunched the numbers and came out with Monday. Mondays are dead in our office.

    • That's exactly what they did. Peak transport used I believe is Mondays followed closely by Fridays with very light commuter numbers, then with moderate to heavy use Thursdays and Wednesday, and the highest passenger numbers on Tuesdays.

    • Wow didn’t know Monday was wfh day

      • +4

It is for a lot of people… Makes Sundays more fun…

        • my WFH day is Friday, so Thursday is the new Friday for me :D

    • +1

      Monday is my day off.
I swear NSW runs off a "free train day" economy because that's all it can afford.

  • +9

This only helps if the Trains work !!!

  • +35

Poor form from the government - logical decision is to make it on Tuesday (the day of the disruption)!

    • -2

      How that’s logical? 😅

      • +15

Because lots of people work from home on certain days and in the office on other days…

It is likely many people that were impacted do not catch the train on Mondays… 😅

        • -7

But it’s logical for government to spend money cautiously and also serving community the way it best can :)

          • +11

            @imYourBossFenny:

            spend money cautiously

This is about compensation to people who have incurred costs.

What they are doing is not being cautious, but basically stealing from these people by not providing what they paid for and not refunding them.

            • -2

@jv: Today there is free bus I heard

              • @imYourBossFenny: Buses are not free today(23/05), I believe they also should have been free, considering there were considerable delays last week for buses too

      • -1

He must be too stressed from yesterday chaos

      • +6

Because it should target affected travellers.

What if people affected will have a day off next Monday? What do they get?

What if people not affected will go to Vivid next Monday? Nothing to do with the disruption but get free rides.

But I can understand it's cheaper and much easier to switch off the Opal readers on a day in the future than retrospectively refund/credit past trips, especially when there are credit/debit cards in the mix.

And they can't do multi-day free travels, it will cost the tax payers too much and sets the wrong expectation in future disruptions.

        • -1

Day off? Common give me a break. People work on tsunami lol and yes you can take day off without pay :) not one day but 2 days :D

  • +27

They push companies to bring staffs work from office with this kind of service.

  • +15

    WoooW Free travel! woow!
Oh my God, we’re so lucky to be in Sydney!
They’re so generous, I bet they’ll increase the ticket prices soon too!

    • +10

Trains only make back 25% of their total costs through fares, most other public transport modes running at close to 90% loss. Where do you think the rest of this money comes from? If you don't charge the people that use it then all the cost will come from all our pockets. Everyone's tax goes up or other services like health and education gets cuts.

      • +5

The estimated cost to the NSW government for providing free public transport to NRL fans is between $2.5 and $3.5 million.

      • Agreed, if they don't raise the prices of tickets, then we'll all be paying more for everyone's free/cheap travel out of our taxes.

        • +2

I haven't used the cheap train travel for several decades, but I have paid a huge amount of tolls for several decades.
It would be good if they can provide a better, faster, more reliable train service so that I don't have to use the more expensive motorways.

  • +4

I'll be going out now on Monday for sure!

  • +39

    spends $100 catching uber home

Gets a free ride worth $9

    • +10

      this….THIS is why i cycle

      • +13

Cycle again then, so you can recycle…

      • +1

It's a wet week to be cycling.

        • raincoat my friend

I'm not really phased by the weather for cycling

Distance however, if it's simply too far i won't cycle it.

          • +2

@whitepuma: Must be nice to have a clean shower available at the office

      • +1

Can't see myself cycling 40km one way to work

        • lol, fair. I can't see myself doing that either.

        • +9

lol I cycle 47km one way (yep, that's 94km return…). I only work 1-2 days in the office though.

I had decided to cycle after being stuck on the Westgate bridge in my car for hours during that bus fire a few years ago.

Takes me a little over 2hrs to cycle from the inner west to the outer east of Melbourne mostly via shared paths. The train option (with last few km on the bike) takes a little under 2hrs, so not much difference between cycling the whole way or taking the train.

Cycling means I get fitter (you should see the size of my thighs!) and I avoid public transport delays/chaos, which does happen way too often on the Werribee line.

          • @brotherfranciz: for me in sydney, takes me 25 minutes to cycle. 35 minutes to drive during peak hour (15 minute drive not in peak hour).

Hence why 6 months ago i made the decision to start cycling.

          • @brotherfranciz: Can you crack nuts with your thighs? 😅
Good job for staying fit though

    • +1

Should post this as a bargain post separately :)

  • +6

NICE…Free Friends and or Family weekday outing to VIVID 2025 Sydney. albeit it may be chaotic.

  • +4

Of course they have to give it on the day where there are less people using the train….prick govt

  • +11

NSW state gov forces people to come into the city to help their business mates. They should at least make it cheaper to travel to incentivise users and have free travel days for public holidays imo.

  • +8

"Here's a Bandaid for those third degree burns. Hope it helps!"

  • +16

For the average person travelling 5 days a week there is no deal.
You will still hit your weekly fare cap only a day later.

  • +15

IMO fares should've been waived off for the day it happened, so Tuesday's fares for those whoever travelled (couldn't really travel) around should be compensated

    • +2

Probably easier said than done - mass refund to Opal cards and credit/debit cards.

There's no magic button to press, they would have to develop a process, and thoroughly test it.

      • I agree it's a big one, but I'm sure they would have it in place, there is no way they are developing and thoroughly testing it within a week

  • +11

Does this also include the train to and from Sydney airport?

    • +11

ah now you're onto something ;)

    • +6

Any deals on flights on that day?

    • +2

I'm back on Monday I'll certainly be inspecting the viability.

      • It’s free

    • +1

I come back on Monday and was thinking the same, but I parked my car in the airport so wouldn't benefit.

    • +2

From 12.01am to 11.59pm on Monday 26 May 2025, travel will be free on all Sydney Trains, Airport Link, and Sydney Metro services on the Opal network.
