Recommend a Car at $15k

Looking for a car for my daughter to be used almost exclusively in the city (Perth). She is uninterested in cars except for getting from A to B.

Something reliable, safe, and cheap to run, maintain and insure.

Around $15k budget and aiming for under 100k on the odometer and 2014 onwards (can stretch price for a good enough reason).

Seems to be better choice in manuals, where I can see Hyundai i20s, Accents, couple of Elantras, Kia Rios, some Mazda 2s, couple of Suzuki Balenos and really quite a lot of VW Golfs, some with quite low kms,

Thoughts from the OzB hive mind?

  • Do you have a salary package arrangement at the workplace, like SmartSalary? You can get a novated lease car for her to drive, given that she's likely to upgrade in 5 years, likely to an EV for her generation (it's easier to organise petrol/service costs, too), and there's a tax incentive to you.

bought an older Lexus, mechanic said nothing goes wrong with them. It's been faultless in the last 7 years of ownership so far.

  • Lexus.

  • Mazda 3 or Hyundai i30

  • Jazz, Civic or Accord with the K24, the V6 accords are decently priced now, but it might be too much power for a new driver.

  • Suzuki Swift - auto or manual. Much underrated and very reliable. Small so perfect for a City.

  • 5 used Holden Captiva diesels.

    • I have a Holden Captiva (petrol) sitting in my driveway, and I have the same conundrum as the OP—I'm looking for a car that is 15k, 2014, etc. I was hoping to trade in the Captiva but my chances or $$$ value of it will be not much is my guess.
I'm looking closely at Audi A1s.
