Best and Worst Dim Sims/Sums from Coles/ALDI/Woolworths?

Who doesn't like a good dimmie but I realised that I have only tried a few from Coles mainly so am wondering what is your favourite dimmie from Coles/Woolies/Aldi or alternately what are some to avoid?

I am desperately needing to restock my freezer with some so am open to recommendations of siu mai, wontons, dim sum, dim sim anything really in this category I can store in the fridge/freezer for late nights like these.

Next, I will need to figure out a steamer option because for now I have just been air frying them or microwaving them.

I did try to boil some har gow a few years back, but I think that ruined the flavour honestly.

Personally, I like to pair it with chili sauce and soy sauce the basics but since I learnt about making mixed peanut sauce (peanut butter + water + hoisin sauce + sugar) I am keen to try it with that.

So which ones are your favourite dim sims/sums or least favourite or are they all the same really and just sort by lowest unit price and be done with it nothing gained nothing lost?

You ought to look into making your own and freezing them so they are ready to cook.

  • Hey there old mate baked strasberg, you don’t need late night food.

But, if you’re going to insist, I like the frozen South Melbourne dim sims, they practically never go on sale though.
I got given a box of D&T and they were ok, pretty much tasted like a marathon frozen dim sim but with ginger in it.

Marathon ones - haven’t seen them for ages though.

Only because life is suffering and I like to be reminded of it at snack time too.

All frozen dumplings in Asian supermarkets are superior to Australian supermarket dumplings, I particularly like Dumpling King.

Just go to your local asian grocer/supermarket.

All the options in Colesworths are honestly trash and taste like cardboard.
Europeans are happy just buy it because its there. Asians wouldn't touch them. (i'm the latter).

Hongkong dimsim i'm looking at you.

  • Why would you boil har gow? Steam it mate. If you are in Melbourne, just buy it from here.

  • put a bowl into a boiling pot with a lid and itll work as a steamer.

KB's is bottom of my list, too much starch and not enough protein like the har gow have very thick skin and they fill it with tiny prawns.

Mr Chen's is very middle ground for me. Decent quality, decent protein but good variety so I'd get it if it's on 50% sale at woolies or coles. without the sale, it's a bit overpriced.

Sunny Seafood a bit better than Mr Chen's, better value and better quality.

Sailing Seas is the best for me, same price as Sunny Seafood but much better quality. Har Gow got full sized prawns with ginger in it and thin skin. Also love that they do chicken char siu bao.
