I Need Help to Select a Jump Starter Kit for a Road Trip Please?

Hi,

We are going for a road trip up North (WA).

There will be times when we will be on roads that will be remote.

I have an Amazon gift card ($150).

I will buy a jump starter kit from Amazon.

My car is a newer Isuzu with a 3-litre turbo-diesel engine.

I definitely need a jump starter kit.

If it can inflate tyres as well that's a bonus.

I have been looking at the following options.

But I cannot decide on which one.

I am happy to use the full gift card amount.

    "definitely", eh?
What is the perceived problem you are trying to solve?

    • There are numerous potential problems that could occur that we shouldnt ring 000 for. As we dont have phone service in the majority of Australia.

Telstra boasts the largest network, covering 99.7% of the population and 3 million square kilometers.

      That's for where people live.

But Australias size is 7,741,220 square kilometers. That's a lot of the country not covered.

      Its best to go prepared.

      • covering 99.7% of the population

        • if you have a range extending antenna.

    Hi,
I am not sure if you have been on a road trip before in a remote area.

When we are travelling to a new location we always leave early in the morning around 5-6am.

I do not anticipate that the battery will fail but having to wait for roadside assistance 5am in a remote area is not a lot of fun ha ha ha…

It is one of those cheap insurance policies which will be valuable if we ever need to use it.

Are you concerned about the state of the battery, or are you planning to use it as a power source while camping? Either way, consider if there is a better solution. Get the car battery tested (they don't fail suddenly) and get an auxiliary deep-cycle battery for camping.
Of course, no harm carrying a pair of jumper leads too.

Mate, I am interested in a Jump Starter Kit. No need for a power bank. Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.

    • You don't sound like you truly appreciate it. The point is that unless you have a reason for expecting a battery failure, it's a pretty random "insurance policy".
How many things could go wrong? But if you drain the battery, you've got that one under control.

I'd be more concerned about what happens if you get a flat tyre. Or a 2nd flat tyre.

[edit: I do carry a jump starter, and a compressor. The compressor has been used, the jump starter hasn't.]

    • NOCO brand one of the best. Once charged it will last months & multiple vehicle restarts (eg more than 6-7) are possible.

  • I have several jump starter powerbank kits. They’re awesome and saved one of my mates who fell asleep in his Hilux and left the interior light on. Jump started his Lux on a Sunday with light rain and zero reception. Really saved him.

I don’t have experience with these specific ones but all three are practically the same. Arguably choose the one that can handle larger engines. My Ines are branded Suaoki and Gooloo.

Also helps to have 2 so if one is overused and hasn’t been recharged, you have a backup.

Good luck and enjoy your trip.

  • You a peak current of 1000A and a minimum of 12,000mAh. So most of those will be fine spec wise. Don’t know quality wise but probably fine as well

Galoo is in your price range and is having a sale at the moment on its website; not Amazon but you can always buy something else with the gift card

    Early 2000's …

I spent 3+ months 4WD up north of WA (including remote tracks - going weeks without seeing another car).

Jump start kit nah, not needed …. but definitely extra tyres (I always carried 2x spares) …

Infact, in 1 single day, I had to replace 3x tyres and that was on bitumen - not off-track.

    • Wow, sounds like a trip that made you tick it off your bucket list :-)

Someone leaves the radio on or the interior lights on.

    • +1

      Exactly.

      • As mentioned it is a newer car and so will most probably have theatre internal lights and a timed "off" for the radio 🤔

        • +1

I'd rip all the fuses for the interior lights and take battery powered independent stuff. At least you can manually control the draw to a degree.

        • +1

My sisters new bt50 took a while to sort out the parasitic battery drain that was happening. Mazda couldnt fix it family friend who's a independent auto electrician diagnosed it and then informed mazda and they then fixed under warranty.

          New cars can have problems.

I have a GOOLOO GP4000 and it is great. I have a 3.2L Diesel Ranger and its great. Its helped out a few people every now and then as well. Keeps charge for ages and it comes with a nice little case as well, its small and compact. Its got a light and can be a powerbank as well.

If you want something for your tyres, look at the Kings Thumder Max Dual Air Compressor. I have one and its great. Extra hose is handy and also go to Supercheap and buy an inflator end, I bent my original one and found the supercheap one to be better..

Like most things, sometimes it is better to have two good seperate items, than try to get an all in one where it might be crap at both.

    • Ironically, I had to jump.my PX3 Ranger after stopping to take a few photos, left the radio on and in the time I took the photos, the car wouldn't start
It said Hill Start Assist not functioning. And came up with faults on the Ford Pass app
      "Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power
      What Is Happening?
Illuminates when the system has detected a powertrain or a four-wheel drive fault.
      What Should I Do?
A powertrain or all-wheel drive (AWD)/four-wheel drive (4WD) fault has been detected, contact your authorised dealer as soon as possible"

Jumped it with the Gooloo (not sure what size) and started first go
Back home later I plugged it into Ctek charger and it showed practically fully charged

      • That all sounds very odd, maybe it charged enough during the drive home or there is a weird voltage issue?

I had an issue with a previous car where when the car was hot/battery was warm, it wouldn't start but cold start was fine. Maybe time for a new battery?

  • +2

These are super handy - I have had a Gooloo for about 5 years and it still goes strong.

  • Whichever one you get, be sure to ready the manual, gooloo are notorious for dying if you take it in your trip and then leave it in the garage or cupboard until you require it's use in future.. they need regular use and top up charging.. hence power bank can be useful if it makes you use it and avoid the upset when you need it, only to realise it's cooked!

    • gooloo are notorious for dying if you take it in your trip and then leave it in the garage or cupboard until you require it's use in future.

Never had an issue with mine…..

      • That's good. Both my friend and I had ours die from lack of use, his within 12 mths and warranty return via Amazon. Mine within 24 months. I haven't bothered replacing as yet.

    • I wish there was one you could leave plugged in to 12V socket, which would intelligently recharge once a month, and would periodically beep if it's charge goes below a threshold….. dreams…

No you dont 'need' a jump starter kit with battery unless it gives you peace of mind. Just carry a jump start cable.

I have a milwuakee air pump. Been good so far!

    • +4

Jump start cables arent that great if there are no other cars around. Unless you carry a spare car with you.

    • +1

Just carry a jump start cable.

Jump Starter Cables are bigger and larger than what my Gooloo Jump Starter is! Even if you have another car around, it's a pain and much easier with a jump starter. No risk of hitting or bumping cars etc.

    • +1

Not really practical in some areas there may be no one else for days.

    Maybe you bought a lemon

    • +1

It is more like a nashi pear :-)

Since you’re going remote, with a compressor, probably worth taking a tyre repair kit as well

    • I got that already. Very essential. End of the day the list can be endless but I have to do what it think is sufficient for a stress free trip.

  • -1

Whats your definition of remote? Theres a big difference between travelling between towns 300km apart on the major roads and going off track to get to the best beach. If youre expecting roadside service, sounds like youre not too remote.

If you are truly getting of the beaten track, get a second battery and a solar panel or two.

If its an isuzu factory vattery andover 2y old, it might be worth replacing the battery before you go. They dont have a good track record for longevity.

I had a look at the Gooloo reviews online. I think it is better than the one I ordered.

I cancelled it and order this one instead:

GOOLOO A3 Jump Starter with Air Compressor, 3000A Portable Car Battery Booster (9.0 Gas/6.5L Diesel) with 150PSI Auto-Shutoff Tire Inflator, 12V

    Thanks guys for your input.

Maybe next time wait a bit longer than a couple of hours before you purchase so you get some actual replies.

  • Update:

GOOLOO A3 Jump Starter with Air Compressor, 3000A Portable Car Battery Booster (9.0 Gas/6.5L Diesel) with 150PSI Auto-Shutoff Tire Inflator, 12V

I have used it to inflate the tyres. So easy to use.

This morning I had a flat battery. I used the jump starter, it was so easy to use.

I can highly recommend the version that I purchased. Thanks everyone for your input.
