If you spend more than $3250 a year then you should get the Executive Membership and get money (2%) back which you can use towards your membership next year. We basically got our membership for free this year. We should get pretty close again for next year.

It costs $130 so you need to spend $3250 to make up the $65 difference between the executive and regular memberships. If you spend more than, there's your discount.

    Edit:

    Rewards are not calculated:

    • On purchases of fuel, bullion, pharmacy, Costco Shop Cards, charitable donations and at food courts.
    • On membership fees.
    • On miscellaneous fees, deposits and taxes, including sales tax and shipping; where prohibited by law or regulation.
    • On purchases made by anyone other than the account's Primary or Primary Household Cardholder.
    • For travel purchases: On taxes, fees, flights, surcharges, gratuities, trip protection, and similar extra purchases.
    • And on certain other categories as determined at Costco's discretion, which may change without notice.

      Why you spend that much?

      • +16

        Because we want to?

If you are a business owner it would be easy to do.

Costco makes the most sense for business owners or large families that need to buy in bulk.

        • +1

If it is local enough the fuel savings are worth the investment….

      • +8

        $271 a month.. Easy.

        • +4

Could spend that on Costco steaks alone.

    • We managed that with only two of us last year but we did buy a recliner chair and a mattress.

  • +3

Yes. Cancel and refund it before it expires

    • +2

then buy a new house and repeat

      • Could you please elaborate? Are they going to ban your name, phone number, address if you refund? Is it in the T&Cs?

        • Ban is a very small risk most bans are due to unreasonable refund abuse requests from items. There is a big sign on there membership area that you can cancel membership anytime if you are unsatisfied

        • +1

          there's no ban
just can't rejoin within 12 months

          • @badarz: which anyone in your household can then be a member, then you can get the additional extension

  • There a store opening hack but you're late to the most recent party, hosted by the Ardeer warehouse

You need a member to buy you Costco gift cards.

No membership required once you have them, and if you spend more than say the $100 gift card given to you, the rest you can pay with your credit card or cash.

    • But can i get 100$ card and spend like just $10 per visit?

      • +1

Yes… but they don't sell anything that costs $10

        • +4

It's like going into Colesworth just for milk, you come out with $50 worth of other stuff.

          Costco is 10x worse.

          • @TEER3X: When we had the one at Docklands we could just buy the milk because it was local. Now we need to drive somewhere you do need to buy more to make it worthwhile.

          • +2

@TEER3X: my GF does a costco shop once a month.
roughly $400 for trolley - heaps good for toilet paper / non-food items.

            SADLY …
their BBQ chickens == huge/large size (but are brined - soo 100% difference in taste compared to WW/Coles … unless you like salty chicken) - but good enough as dog/pet food.
their meat/mince == low preservatives - so if you don't freeze or use straight away … will go bad within 2 days.

@simplystu: Hmmmm. we actually enjoy their chook roast.

              • +2

@tebbybabes: I had it for the first time recently and thought it was much better than Colesworth.

            • @simplystu: I tried Costco chicken once, and found that it had a strong smell of chlorine. Never tried it again.

        • +1

          Roast chicken

    • Cam my friend who is a Costco member just buy me a $25 card then I can purchase anything just using that card without membership?

      • +2

You can buy $1000 worth of stuff if you want and you’ll pay $25 on the gift card and the rest with whatever method you want

        • +5

… and the food court POS accepts non-member credit cards so you can enjoy a cheap feed on your way out

          • +10

@sumyungguy: No need to call the food court names.. I think it’s actually pretty damned good

        • Is this 100% confirmed?

    • Oooh didnt know that about the extra spend, thanks.

  • +2

Yes it it's not a big discount, but it's cheaper.

Buy discounted Woolworths or Coles cards, that you can use to pay for groceries and stuff.

The "stuff" is to buy the 10% off Vanilla Mastercard or Visa cards (the deals are posted here on OzBargain).

Pay for your membership this way.

    Thanks all!

There is a genius hack I forgot to mention… purchase membership (in-person) in a cheaper country; e.g. NZ $60 which converts to A$56. Downside is you can't shop online if that matters?

  • +2

Yes, buy then cancel for refund.

  • +1

Get the membership along with a friend and split the cost. You will get 2 cards, 1 for each.
You might need to live with your friend for a while to change the address in your vicroads account and get the address sticker that you will need to show as address proof.
After that you can move out and every renewal can be done without address proof.

Don't forget to update your address in your vicroads account when you move out.:)

Ok, so if I visit Costco 5 times a year, I would : buy membership, buy 5 gift cards 20each using that membership, then cancel the membership. Do it every year. Sound good ?

    • Wow.

    • ^ This. If you don't go there too often, Just get yourself some costco gift cards. you can use 1 per visit (pay the balance with cash or your bank card).

  • Heard it mentioned that the easter show or some show had a costco showbag which had some discount in it, but cant find anything like this online, anyone come across it at all?

    • No? Just bite the bullet. The $65 is a rounding error vs what you'll wind up spending there.

    • Costco Canberra had a stall at the fresh festival in the carpark in Majura shops today.
They offered executive memberships for $130 and were offering $40 gift cards , $10 for auto renewal, roughly $50 worth fruit and vegetable hamper, 1 box of Costco muffins, 1 sourdough loaf 1kg and a costco shopping bag. That's almost $120 worth.
Not bad considering we will be giving up the membership withing the year.

      • Wow, great find!

  • Can you get someone to sell you their supplementary card? It's a common practice with Sams clubs overseas AFAIK

    • As long as you edit the image on the card seeng as they've introduced photo id checking

      • My understanding is that supplementary card has a different photo to the main cardholder as it's supposed to be for a friend

        • The Supplementary card has the supplementary card holder’s photo. You nominate who that person is. Nit sure about business cards.

      • Won't work. They have started doing entry checks. You just scan the barcode and photo details come on to their screen with your photo. Editing the card photo won't work, you will have to hack their server

$65/12 = $5.42 per month. Costco prices are partially funded by their membership.
    4 million est members x $65 = $260 million.

Yet, most Australians think they are getting a bargain shopping at colesworth where their rewards are funded by gullible suppliers, trying to get you to buy their product when promoted on endcaps, or the catalogues we don't read.
If you can't afford $65 and want bargains, shop at Aldi.

    • Membership fees makes up less than 3% of their revenue and it operates with a margin of less than 5%. Without the membership scheme, this model is bust.

      • +1

I think you'll find some 70% of Costco's revenue comes from memberships, that's the genius of their model which others would love to emulate
