Imported Gas for Victoria

A company called Viva Energy is going to import gas to Geelong to supplement our gas Shortages. It's not another victorian government folly, but we can be sure we will be paying top price.

WE have a state that has regulations to prevent opening new gas sites, and exports 70-80% of VICTORIA's gas production..
Are we importing it from ourselves or other states.
Tell me this is not what the climate industry is about - making lots of money from suckers

    import gas to Geelong

Which politician will be supplying the gas?

BHP. (Barnaby's Hyper Putrid) Methane (high octane)

Source? Victoria hasn't exported gas for years

    • Afghanistan,Pakistan, what's the difference……?

I hope the irony of this is not lost on you.

@Clickbait. Queensland, NT and WA export gas but Victoria hasn't for years. We don't have enough gas pipelines available to get this gas to Victoria so Victoria is building this gas terminal so they can accept LNG. Investing in a gas pipeline will likely cost way more than this LNG terminal considering how we are moving away from gas.

Why would the Victorian government ban oil and gas exploration if there was none to find

Why would the Victorian government ban oil and gas exploration if there was none to find legislate to protect finite, precious groundwater.

      • Garbage.

Victorian has has never been exported. The legislation allowing the sale and production of gas in Victoria does not allow for the export of gas.

It takes ab out10 seconds to look it up. do a bit of your own work

Nah champ, you came on here making your own post about this topic, supposedly wanting to educate others of something you deem important, share your sources.

“Do your own research” when you’re the one that raised the discussion just reeks of “I have no idea what I’m talking about”, so thanks for confirming that.

Why can't we just get more Australian gas?

So many untapped gas reservoirs in Bass Strait…

    • +3

Because we give our gas away for free👍🏻.

      • +1

        There is lots more…

        • Because gas explorers have convinced politicians that it’s not viable to go into production if they cannot sell the gas into international markets. We get none. It’s why we need a domestic gas reservation policy

There is plenty still underground in the traps. Just need to drill for it.

As someone who has actually worked supporting E&P in Bass Strait this is not true.

Whilst there are known gas reservoirs, the majority of undeveloped fields are either sour gas (IE high sulphur content), or uneconomic for the companies which control the fields (Generally the ExxonMobil/Woodside JV). It is a matter for debate if another lower cost operator might develop some of the smaller fields, however the ongoing closure and decommissioning of Bass Strait facilities and the Longford gas plant make it increasingly unlikely that the small additional fields will be able to be developed in an economic manner.

The one potential gas source which does exist in Gippsland is onshore coal seam gas, however since that exploration opportunity was shut down in approx 2006-7 there has been no ability to evaluate how that gas can be developed. Given the decommissioning timeline of the Longford gas plant, it's unlikely now that coal seam gas will ever be developed in Gippsland.

Where do you think JV projects got their name?

      • -4

unlikely that the small additional fields will be able to be developed in an economic manner.

It is economical, it's just that the big players are focussing on areas with more profit and less uncertainty cause by government.

        • +4

Name one undeveloped field! I've actually seen the leads and prospects map, I've seen the reservoir modelling and seen the 3 and 4d seismic.

Stop spouting about things you've got no technical knowledge of which your bias towards "governments and corporations are screwing us" dictates your output around.

@jv: Different sort of gas,in your case.

  • +4

The feds approved the extra train at the Santos LNG port at Gladstone despite not having enough gas to fill it, based on Santo's promises they would have no trouble developing new fields.

So Santos exports gas that would otherwise be available domestically.
For some reason, the government (both sorts) has refused to act to deal with this issue and Viva and Squadron are importing LNG from abroad.

It's crazy. But Santos love it, squadron energy love it and shortly Viva will love it, so who will argue for lower profits for those three just to save the homes and gas reliant industry of the east coast?
    Massive government failure.

Victoria seems to have this love/hate relationship with gas.
In the nineties, BHP couldn’t get approval for their offshore Minerva gas development, they kept getting pushed back by the environmental lobby, as it was located in the Port Campbell National Park. Then two things changed:
In 1998, the Longford gas plant blew up and the gas supply stopped, and the general public realised that they actually needed the products of the dirty oil and gas industry.
And BHP went with a totally subsea development for the Minerva gas field, so there was no gas platform visible from shore, and they even located the Minerva gas plant 4 kilometres inland, so nothing was visible from the coastal path.
So the Minerva gas development went ahead, as people wanted warm showers in the morning and to be able to switch the lights on, and to have their factory or office open so they could work and get paid.
It’s a shame that Victorians have such short memories.

      In the nineties

Half the population wasn't born then, of course they don't remember

    • Nothing love hate about protecting finite potable water from the fracking of gas.Fracking is like mixing shit with your breakfast muesli and wondering why you have a guts ache.

  • -2

Meh, Australia don't need gas. The only place that need it is industrial manufacturing but there's hardly any left except for food production so a little import is fine, they can afford that. Looks at Europe they have been relying on cheap gas from their eastern comrade and now paying the price.

    • -2

The idiots, esp Germany, shut down all their nuclear plants because of climate, as did a number of other european countries. Now they all rely on French Nuclear.
and are you talking about th Eastern (Russian) gas that has beem flowing thru Ukraine to Germany for a decade without a single bomb hitting it.
Now German wind and solar are failing and gas is depleted, then they need Nuclear.
And no-one is going to touch Nordstream. I think I will just watch the ABC news Matrix

      • +1

lol, Europe has zillions of gas pipeline out east, Ukraine is just one among many. Australia don't even need any of that much energy anyway. Just look at Tasmania, the coldest place and they've been going gasless for ages, to the extend that having reticulated gas is a very luxury thing they can live without.
Further north you will have solar cover all your energy need. Don't wait for nuclear because it'll never come, by the time it comes, every house gonna have 200kwh battery for half that price and we can all live offgrid for weeks.

      • Fancy doing anything because of 'climate'. LOL

PS : You could deffs not handle the ABC news matrix. There's way too much actual fact & truth. It might met that foil re-entry suit.

Ditch gas, get solar and electric. Better for everyone except gas companies.
