I am an old lady born way before the time of use by dates. Even now if it is something that I don't digest/eat it is fair game as I can't see how it can cause me harm outside of my body. I might rub a bit on my arm and leave it for a couple of hours if I was in anyway suss about it to see if there was a reaction of any sort but as far as I know if anything is old it is usually just weaker in strength as I have never had a reaction yet. Obviously if it stinks or it has seperated or gone a real manky colour I will bin it but in my day we didn't really throw anything out with of course the exception of food and then it was usually the eye and nose test as we still didn't have dates on food either. You can't tell me you can eat meat that has been left out for days just because it has a use by date on it
