I am in the market to purchase a new or near new car (demo). Is it possible nowadays to get 10% off what the dealers are asking on car sales in NSW?
EOFY Car Deals and Discounts

Comments
Correct, should be more like 20%
I only got 15%
I got a 50% discount on a Teslaarrr by saying nice things on Truth Social about Elon
Depends on model stock situation.
If they have stock they need to move, then a discount will likely be advertised anyway.
Don’t expect to pick and choose model or colour.
10% off
what year is this
This is all because once in while people come here and brags about their massive deals from possible inflated prices lol
Lol. FFS
Idk about new cars but I haven't had any luck getting any discounts with 2nd handed ones from the dealer. Even tried going in on the last day of the month.
Was looking at a 2020 Subaru XV that was listed for $23,000. Came in and the best they could knock off was a few hundred dollars. Turned out it was from Queensland and wasn't even registered in NSW yet. They could register it but all ontop of that price.
Apparantly they're only making a few grand profit
I won't believe a car salesman, having said that their profit would be a little tight these days.
Yes. I just purchased a brand new vehicle. These stories of not being able to negotiate is bs. I know Toyota wont because there is up to a six month wait on particular models. I looked at Skoda, VW, and Mazda. All did a great price and were willing to take thousands off the price. I think the situation helps if you have a trade in vehicle because they can fudge the figures a bit more. I don't know if that's how i got a great deal but i think we did well.
BMW, Audi, Volvo and so on. They are very keen to move stock.
A few that won't discount (Honda, Merc being on agency model) and Toyota/Lexus (Lexus cam shave a bit off, but not 10%).
@jokaI have just started looking so interested in what make and model car you ended up buying and the reason/s why you picked that particular one?
I'd love to know what you paid but I understand if you don't want to say that here.
Can send me a DM if you like or no prob if you're not comfortable giving out that info at all.Yes, everyone will laugh but I just got rid of my third Volkswagen. I can’t stand them anymore and I nearly made the same mistake for the fourth time. After the car hits 100,000km, it’s useless. So I got the Mazda cx5.
Yes I know ŠKODA is the same as vw but I liked the Octavia wagon. Very modern and has a huge boot.
Went with the Mazda simply for the longevity (I hope). It’s very basic. Got the sport model for the gps satnav (don’t understand how people rely on satnav from their phone where there is no signal).
Paid $31,000 after trade in with a handful of extras.
Thanks @joka for that info. It is very helpful. I love the look of the VW Tiguan and have really wanted to consider it but so many bad comments on here about them I have stayed away. Now your comment has confirmed that even more so thank you. I am so scared at buying a lemon and, even with long warranties, ozbargainers warn against so many brands due to it being hard to get parts etc. I am finding it a really stressful and confusing thing to consider so am still holding on to my 27 year old KIA that I bought brand new. Better the devil you know mindset!!
Problem is, it has 'undiagnosable' issues that stop me having confidence to drive very far and it's not worth spending the money to try and get a proper diagnosis and then the costs to fix whatever that issue is given the age.
I really appreciate the details you have shared and I wish you good luck with your Mazda CX5. :-)Got the sport model for the gps satnav (don’t understand how people rely on satnav from their phone where there is no signal).
You can download a part of the google map or even better there are offline Maps like Here Maps. Works same as the dedicated GPS. Recently used the HERE maps on a TAS trip. Now I have the whole NSW, VIC, QLD maps saved on the phone.
CX5 yes you get the longevity but ya paying for it due to the car being a fuel guzzler
All did a great price and were willing to take thousands off the price.
Theyre playing games. All that means is theyve upped the RRP to make you think youre getting a great bargain.
I think the situation helps if you have a trade in vehicle because they can fudge the figures a bit more. I don't know if that's how i got a great deal but i think we did well.
That's exactly how you got a 'great deal.' Only driveway cash price is comparable. The second you introduce some other variable like trade-in, they can obfuscate the numbers. They'll either low-ball your trade in, squeeze you with in-house financing, or both.
Yes. No. Depends.
It all depends on what youre buying. If its got a wiat list, no. If there is 12 in the storage yard, probably. Do you want a rare model? Maybe youre buying just whatever they are trying to offload? Are there 'sales' on that model? Do you want a particular option?
A lot of stock. New and demo. But the dealers I spoke to don't want to lower the price further.
Ultimately its a silly game. YOU need tondecide what you will pay for the vehicle you want to buy. Then THEY need to be in a position to want to sell you that vehicle at that price. If their counter offer is to high for YOU, you need to then make a decision to walk away and go without, or up your offer.
You wont get them tongo below a set price. Wether that meets your expectation or not is just the way it is.
I got 8.5% off last week on a new vehicle in stock, one third of the discount was the eofy offer though.
8.5% off RRP or the advertised price?
RRP
I'd love to know what make and model you bought and why you chose that particular car?
I get the 5 finger discount
So Toyotas now? Ran out of Commodores?
Considering you've not mentioned the make or model of the car, then the answer is definitely maybe.
Comparing what other discount people got on different vehicles seems like a pointless exercise.Based on Hyundai’s deal you can expect at leeeeeasst $20k off
https://www.hyundai.com/au/en/offers/2023-ioniq-6/offer-deta…Haha Korean cars are so last year. I got a brand new China EV for a touch more than 1.5x that discount (mg4 and it’s not as cheap now I know)
But did you get $20k? No matter how high the RRP, that’s all that matters
I got 8% off
That was lucky…
Only in China, this is Australia
When I did some work for a very large well known vehicle importer once they had over a 100 percent markup on vehicles from the landed cost including all shipping and taxes and dealer retail (ex gst) . Some of the markups are real costs, covering shipping from port to dealer etc but there is also a huge amount of fat in the retail pricing. So, there should be plenty of room to negotiate.
Car industry in Australia gets away with this as there ae still too many laws left over from when we manufactured in Australia protecting the vehicle importers from competition such as parallel imports, private imports of new and near new vehicles etc. All this is at the expense of the Australian vehicle buyer.
"parallel imports, private imports of new and near new vehicles etc"
Spot on. Though, might create a headache on the insurance part when ever Ibrahim and John are importing their fully sick JDMs with turbo cranked up to 10 bar.
Another real issue is private imports might be less safe (less airbags etc). Cars are spec-ed different for different market (including the safety aspect such as the number of airbags etc).
Then we have warranty and recalls to be worried about.
What brand was it?
Maybe check out the Jeeps. They might pay you to take it off their yard.
I wouldn't mind a Wrangler, but there is almost no stock.
You haven’t learnt anything from these forums or the news?
Nope
but there is almost no stock.
Even Jeep is smart enough to know it doesn't want a Jeep.
Next car will be EV and resigned to the fact that most have adopted the Tesla/BYD sales model so theres really no negotations. Takes the fun out of the haggle.
You can still haggle. Give them an offer and if they say they don’t negotiate then walkaway
I live by the motto , if you don't ask, you don't get and/or the answer is always NO.
Surely you will get more discounts on the ioniq 6 rightnow
You can always haggle for free mats!
Lucky you to be in such a position. The only way i can experience a new car to to catch an uber ride.
I once got a brand new car (Volkswagen Tiguan) from a rental company (Odometer was just 5 km - they literally gave me the brand new car even without doing a test drive..!) Kept it for 10 days or so and had a fantastic time with it (returned it with few thousand kms). Nice car (though I generally rescent German cars LOL)
Did you get high from the new car smell?
Lucky you to be in such a position. The only way i can experience an uber ride is to walk past an uber ride.
Demo car = Fart Car
Not sure why Australians have accepted the Demo Car phenomenon while it's a used car with dealer warranty
First thing I do when I get into a demo is unleash that flat white
This question is pretty pointless unless the OP specifies which models he is looking to buy.
No
