Westpac Qantas Altitude Black Card: $0 Fee 1st Year (+QFF Fee $75) for Existing Customers (Ongoing $295/Year) @ Westpac

260

I am an OzBargainer with a Westpac account just for Shopback before. Looking for a new credit card with travel insurance and frequent traveler points and this ad aroused my interest and still appears that application can still be allowed. However Westpac Qantas card does have 3% foreign currency international transaction fee.

Mod: Removed duplicate bonus Qantas Points offer from title.

~ Bonus Qantas or Velocity Points Promotion Altitude Black: Offer commenced 26th March 2025. To be eligible for bonus Qantas or Velocity Points, you must apply and be approved for a new Altitude Qantas Black or Altitude Velocity Black credit card before the offer is withdrawn. You will receive an initial 90,000 bonus points if you spend $6k or more on eligible purchases within 120 days of card approval. These will be credited to your points balance within 12 weeks of meeting this spend criteria. You will receive an additional 30,000 bonus points if you keep your account open for more than 12 months and continue to use the card.

<Existing customers only – Altitude Qantas Black: Offer commenced 26th March 2025. First Year Card Fee Waiver is available for existing Westpac customers when you apply and are approved for a new Altitude Qantas Black card before the offer is withdrawn. After the first year, the Card Fee reverts to $295 thereafter, and will be debited to your account annually on the 12-month anniversary of the Card Fee date.

Note: introduction of new card exclusion periods (I think 18 & 24-months, please do your only due diligent :))

  • Can you sign up for a free bank account or similar first to get the fee waiver?

    • I guess so but need other OP to tell as I am a current customer with Westpac.

    • Yeah, did this a year ago

    • yup that’s what I did, just open a no fee bank account

Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 24 months, are not eligible for this offer.

Seems like most banks have now changed to 24 months between churns.

A change for the worse 😞

Once they see customer numbers dropping due to these silly conditions they might change their mind, hold strong churners!

      • 24 months = ANZ, Bankwest, G&C Mutual Bank, StG/BoM/BSA, and Westpac.

So if I'm not flying and have no use for FF points, what does 90k points equate to in cash money/stuff?

Edit: Figured it out, about $500.

    • Or you can sell it on classifieds, they are going for 1-1.4c per point, so will be around 900 worth (but this has some risks so be cautious)

  • Just to note - I have had this card for a few months now - they recently emailed me with changes they're making to the earn rate: https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…

Interestingly, they're still adverting the old rates despite these changing coming into effect 01/08/25.

Very poor earner following these changes and definitely should be a churner only:

    New Qantas Points earn rate

    International spend
For international purchases made in store and online

    $1 = 1.2 Points

Once you spend $10,000 in a statement cycle, you will earn 0.25 Points per $1 on further eligible purchases

    Everyday spend
Most major Australian supermarkets, department stores, petrol stations, dining and utilities

    $1 = 0.8 Points

    All other purchases

    $1 = 0.5 Points

Once you spend $5,000 in a statement cycle, you will earn 0.2 Points per $1 on further eligible purchases.

Yep I got the same email. With this new earn rate it is just slightly above the commbank ultimate card, but the commbank one does not charge international conversion fee.

Annual credit card fee also going from $100 to $175…..time to go to ING methinks.

  • Is there a velocity version with no annual fee ?

  • i don't think they waive first year fee very often

  • but if I sign in my westpac account, I can only see

Plus, because you’re already with Westpac, get a reduced card fee of $150 for the first year (reverts to $295 p.a. thereafter).

    • Having the same issue…

    • same

Try to login based on the the link above rather than your own app/internet bank login. I did get the reduced card fee of $150 if I log in and apply without using the above link.
