Westpac Qantas Altitude Black Card: $0 Fee 1st Year (+QFF Fee $75) for Existing Customers (Ongoing $295/Year) @ Westpac

430

I am an OzBargainer with a Westpac account just for Shopback before. Looking for a new credit card with travel insurance and frequent traveler points and this ad aroused my interest and still appears that application can still be allowed. However Westpac Qantas card does have 3% foreign currency international transaction fee.

Mod: Removed duplicate bonus Qantas Points offer from title.

~ Bonus Qantas or Velocity Points Promotion Altitude Black: Offer commenced 26th March 2025. To be eligible for bonus Qantas or Velocity Points, you must apply and be approved for a new Altitude Qantas Black or Altitude Velocity Black credit card before the offer is withdrawn. You will receive an initial 90,000 bonus points if you spend $6k or more on eligible purchases within 120 days of card approval. These will be credited to your points balance within 12 weeks of meeting this spend criteria. You will receive an additional 30,000 bonus points if you keep your account open for more than 12 months and continue to use the card.

<Existing customers only – Altitude Qantas Black: Offer commenced 26th March 2025. First Year Card Fee Waiver is available for existing Westpac customers when you apply and are approved for a new Altitude Qantas Black card before the offer is withdrawn. After the first year, the Card Fee reverts to $295 thereafter, and will be debited to your account annually on the 12-month anniversary of the Card Fee date.

Note: introduction of new card exclusion periods (I think 18 & 24-months, please do your only due diligent :))

  • Can you sign up for a free bank account or similar first to get the fee waiver?

    • I guess so but need other OP to tell as I am a current customer with Westpac.

    • Yeah, did this a year ago

    • yup that’s what I did, just open a no fee bank account

      • Does Westpac have a no fee bank account?

Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 24 months, are not eligible for this offer.

Seems like most banks have now changed to 24 months between churns.

    • +1

A change for the worse 😞

    • -5

Once they see customer numbers dropping due to these silly conditions they might change their mind, hold strong churners!

      • Banks don't want people who "churn" - they want people who become indebted for life.

Credit Card Sign-up Bonus Exclusion Periods

      • 12 months = HSBC (except Star Alliance Credit Card), and Qantas Money.
      • 18 months = American Express, CommBank, HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card, and NAB.
      • 24 months = ANZ, Bankwest, G&C Mutual Bank, StG/BoM/BSA, and Westpac.

Citibank have no advertised exclusion periods. Virgin Money sign-up bonus offers are not available to existing Virgin Money credit card holders.

So if I'm not flying and have no use for FF points, what does 90k points equate to in cash money/stuff?

Edit: Figured it out, about $500.

    • Or you can sell it on classifieds, they are going for 1-1.4c per point, so will be around 900 worth (but this has some risks so be cautious)

      • What's the safest way of doing this?

  • Just to note - I have had this card for a few months now - they recently emailed me with changes they're making to the earn rate: https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…

Interestingly, they're still adverting the old rates despite these changing coming into effect 01/08/25.

Very poor earner following these changes and definitely should be a churner only:

    New Qantas Points earn rate

    International spend
For international purchases made in store and online

    $1 = 1.2 Points

Once you spend $10,000 in a statement cycle, you will earn 0.25 Points per $1 on further eligible purchases

    Everyday spend
Most major Australian supermarkets, department stores, petrol stations, dining and utilities

    $1 = 0.8 Points

    All other purchases

    $1 = 0.5 Points

Once you spend $5,000 in a statement cycle, you will earn 0.2 Points per $1 on further eligible purchases.

    • +1

Yep I got the same email. With this new earn rate it is just slightly above the commbank ultimate card, but the commbank one does not charge international conversion fee.

Annual credit card fee also going from $100 to $175…..time to go to ING methinks.

  • Is there a velocity version with no annual fee ?

  • i don't think they waive first year fee very often

  • but if I sign in my westpac account, I can only see

Plus, because you’re already with Westpac, get a reduced card fee of $150 for the first year (reverts to $295 p.a. thereafter).

    • Having the same issue…

    • same

    • +2

Try to login based on the the link above rather than your own app/internet bank login. I did get the reduced card fee of $150 if I log in and apply without using the above link.

      • This

  • Has anyone got the approval who recently applied? I applied on 12th and still waiting to hear back from them

    • I got it approved within 3 business days (applied on 6-June and approved on 11-June)

      • Did you get a call? They called me on a Saturday and missed it.

        • No i didnt. Just need to upload bank statement for salary proof.

  • I am signed in with Westpac and using the link from this deal but get stuck after I click start application.
This is the link it tries for this deal: https://www.ui.westpac.com.au/hamal/etb0/customer?promoCode=…
This is the link for the $150 first year: https://www.ui.westpac.com.au/hamal/etb0/customer/customer?p… (this one gives me an SMS code error but I assume that is a my problem not a targeted promo problem)

    • I got stuck too, maybe because it is targeted

      • +1

Ended up trying a few times and got through and successfully applied.

        • Hey mate, I am getting stuck and “Update your mobile number and residential address” screen. All is updated, tried contacting support but being shuffled around. Did you get that, and how did you get around to it?

          • @sam0041: Was a combination of different browsers, incognito mode, signing in first then using the deal link, using the deal link and then signing in etc. I can't remember what worked.

          • @sam0041: I also get this error, did you get around it?

  • so basically its 90k points for $0 fee (assuming an existing westpac customer) - thats good right!?

    • Lol yes

    • +1

Its actually 90k for $75 qff fee. But yes it's good.

    • +2

Lol, credit cards offer 1st yr no annual fee & bonus sign-up points are rare nowadays , so yes, this is good

    • But for the following year - $295+$75 per year, seems like a rip to only get insurance and 2 lounge passes, and 30k points. Or am I missing something? Seems like the points are getting nerfed soon. Who would use this credit card normally?

      • +2

        Or am I missing something?

You close the account after received the sign-up bonus then move to the next promo.

This is the 1st rule of Ozbargain's handbook on "How to get your first credit card".

        • yep just gotta churn like @timhn said

i posted on the st george platinum credit qantas card thread but once i got the card, spent the $ , got the points then week after cancelled the card lol.
essentially $149 for 70k qantas points

  • Just got the card approved today finally, the whole process took about 8 business days.
Does anyone if repaying Zip pay counts towards spending criteria and earning points?

    • How is the process? Called yesterday morning and they asked for all the statements I have and proof of income for longer period. Called again at pm and rejected right after the call. I thought why bother ask the docs if its going to be rejected anyways so I called again this morning ang was told its back on pending.

      • +1

My one got approved today after uploading my other loan statements yesterday arvo, they requested additional info in the morning by call

  • +2

Thanks, applied for my wife and got approved straight away today. This offer is way better as it waives the annual fee for the first year. FYI even you click through the website the current fee is $150 for existing customer.

Good offer for 90k qantas pts for a small fee $75.

  • Got approved for this but got no details of qantas points and how to get it, how to pay the $75 fee? Or how to get the lounge benefit. Does anyone have this information somewhere?

    • Qantas lounge can be registered at https://loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au/.

From my experience the $75 QFF fee payable to Westpac will be charged at the end of the first statement period.

There is no details of bonus qantas points to be received after spending $6k+ but I had my screenshot in case I need to follow-up with Westpac ;)

Applied for a free (for 12 months) savings account so i'm an 'existing customer'.

However applying for the credit card through the above link gives me a number of errors. First asked me to update my phone number and adress (which was already up to date). And now i just get a "Sorry, we're having technical issues. Please try starting a new application. If the technical issue continues, please try again later."

Waited an hour or so and no change, but hopefully soon……

    • errors continue 16h later. Clicking apply asks me to:

"To start your application, you'll need to update your details in Online Banking:

      mobile number
residential address, which can't be a PO Box"

Which is already up to date…… so i dont know what to do.

This is Westpac so I would say you may need to bare with a few days to get your Westpac profile up and running…

      • fingers crossed!

I've churned through about 10 or so cards at this point, but somehow never had a single westpac card, so this will be a first. Off to a rocky start!

        • I am also on the same page. Any update on your application? I've tried updating the mobile number and residential address to the same value (obviously), still no luck

  • Did anyone who applied for the card get immediately charged the $75 QFF fee?
I have booked flights for December using another credit card, intending to use the Qantas Lounge.
The PDS mentions that Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees are included, which suggests the $75 should cover this.
    Could anyone confirm the fee?

    • +1

The $75 annual Rewards Program Fee is charged by Westpac for this card to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points. It is not a QFF fee and will not trigger any spend requirements for activating lounge passes.

Eligible spend for unlocking Qantas lounge passes contains a few suggestions for triggering the spend requirements. For example, purchasing a carbon offset for an existing flight booking (yours or even someone else's).
