Moving Away from Telstra Mobile Plan and Now Overwhelmed with The Choices

Hi Everyone

I have been with Telstra for years on one of their upfront mobile plans, but with the constant price hikes, I'm finally looking to switch.

That said, I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the options with different providers, postpaid vs prepaid, plans, promos, etc.

I'm mainly after a good value plan with around 30GB of data per month (don't need anything too fancy).

What is the best deal right now, or what is the ozb way to get a SIM these days?

Thanks in advance

Just noticed OP has been a member since 2019.
      Sheesh

Boost and Ozbargain are like besties. Full Telstra network, wholesaler prices.

Mind you the Costco Telstra deal is pretty hard to beat.

      • You are right I should be ashamed

Could you port out and in and get the Costco Telstra deal?

      • Can the costco telstra deal be bought and activated like months later?

      • Does it have international calls aswell

  • If you want to stay on Telstra network there's Aldi & Belong Mobile. They both have data rollover however Belong appears more flexible because you can drop down to a cheaper plan & data won't be wiped + can data gift (buy data on eBay).

Also with Belong you can stay on the cheapest plan ($25 per month) & when data runs out just use the throttled unlimited data or buy more on eBay.
More info on this old post.

Another option is buy one of many 1 year plans upfront.

I would have recommend Woolworths mobile as I’ve been with them for years.. but they nerfed the good plans awhile back (I’m still grandfathered) but of late… my Melbourne Metro reception has been really poor. CBD and literally crawling. However the work Optus Sim… Flawless..

Not sure Telstra MVNO is the way to go.. Unless Woolworths are wanting me to leave due to me being too cheap.. I wouldn’t rule that out

  • Kogan Large $159 300GB $0.53 per GB, maybe too cheap for those who prefer the mid-price segment…

  • If you shop at Woolies the Everyday Mobile post paid Plans give you a 'once a month' 10% discount on your shopping. Plus they use the Telstra Network.

I moved from Telstra to boost for exactly the same reason…the constant price hikes. I like the Telstra network, so I switched to boost 365day plan which is coming to an end soon and I bought it when it was on sale and had extra data added. Best decision yet. Definitely move to prepaid annually. More like a set and forget kinda plan until it's time to renew

  • Depends if you are fussy about the network. Boost if you must have Telstra, Kogan if Vodafone is ok.

On Telstra - a lot of Telstra customers have asked me for advice on internet and phones over the years. My reaction has always been the same when I find out how much they are paying - amazement that Telstra has any customers.

    • Common story sadly. Most people do not care to shop around or are even aware that companies aside from the big three exist. Along with misconceptions of "inferior" reception and service mean that they just end up sticking with the known companies.

A lot of my friends and family were still on Telstra, Optus or Vodafone before I convinced them to branch out and try a MVNO. Many of them were just paying through the nose for their mobile service because "it just works".

  • I went from Telstra to Boost and had weird issues with data throughput that were solved by switching back to Telstra.
Meanwhile the kids are all on Woolworths mobile and have no issues so I've just moved the wife and I to that on, what is probably overkill, their base 5G plan.

So far it's been pretty good, in some respects actually felt better than Telstra on my commute into the city.

Although (conspiracy theory) I did notice after about a week on the service I got a carrier update today… coincidence? Or the phone has caught up with the change and this profile nerfs its capability because it's not proper Telstra anymore :P Will see tomorrow when I'm back in the city.

  • I went with Belong for good coverage but be aware, they do not yet support esims. They’ve been promising ‘soon’ for months.
