Woolworths have introduced The Killer Coffee Co coffee beans at a fantastic introductory price.

Medium Roast 700g
Industrial Strength 700g
Darkerside 700g

Works out to be $19.93kg
Standard shelf price (after 10th) $19.95 each ($28.64kg), which is still quite cheap.

Have always wanted to try this out, but at this price with a local store pickup it's a no brainer. Bought 2 bags, now need to buy a grinder!
Appears to be Aus. wide.

  • I like the Darker side variant beans from Killer Coffee Co. I tried it when my local Coles ran out of DC Coffee - Darkness beans for ages… My partner also liked it, but we both agreed that DC Coffee Darkness was the better one for our taste buds.

I'm almost finished the 1kg bag of Killer Coffee beans I bought but will be going back to my preferred.

Is this medium roast better than Aldi medium roast 1kg for $17?

    • +1

Up to $17 now…wowza! Dark was $11 last time looked.
      Still great value.

      • +1

Still cheap per kilo (but also thought was more like $15-16 not long ago.

I'd be very surprised if the killer co was better (and will be $19.95 anyway). May try some on the intro offer depending on the comments here. No point if they are clearing old stuff but will have a look. Still got 500g in the freezer.

      • +2

Damn. Coffee prices be going up. The Coles one is at $18 now too. Are the $12/kg days over? 🥲

        • +2

Still way better than $40-60/kg like at the yuppee places.

          • @G-rig: Maybe my tastebuds are shit, but I've gone through phases of yuppie and bougee coffee beans before and even though a few of them have a great flavour profile, I don't think they're worth what they're priced at. The Coles and Aldi beans I think are great value for money and still taste decent depending on your equipment and coffee making skills.

            • @cornflakes: Yes of course they aren't worth it, haha.
Wasn't too bad when a kg was $28-30 but the new normal seems more like $50 these days.

Agree, the Aldi medium roast are my go too and is totally fine once your skills are good enough with a setup that works.

      • Been a long time since you looked :)

It had gone up to $15 maybe 2 years ago, but Woolies kept theirs at $12 and Aldi dropped theirs back to $12 around the start of last year.

Wasn't until a couple of months ago that Woolies increased theirs to $15, so Aldi followed a week or two later, then Coles after them.

        • Ah ok,
Yeah I bought 8kg of Primo beans last year during xmas special (8kg to get free shipping). They didnt arrive.
After a few weeks they resent them.
Both deliveries arrived same day. So had 16kg in the freezer. Plus a bag of Lime Blue (good stuff), plus found 2kg of Coles beans (When they cleared them out for $6/kg).
I have modded my BES to do single shots perfectly, and only have 2 a day…No beans required by me for a while.
Do a bean swap with fam every now and then to see if there is a good Aldi batch (they go in waves). Find Aldi is best around October.

          • @tunzafun001: Ridiculous amount to sit on. Agree lime blue is great when 40% off and can order small bags to make up 75$ for free shipping. Otherwise Aldi is usually good enough (and can get lucky with 2-6 week old beans.

    • I recently went on a deep dive to find a replacement for the ever-increasing prices of ground coffee. I used to rely on Lavazza Qualità Oro, often buying it on sale for around $25/kg, sometimes even less when stocked up in advance. But lately, even those deals have become scarce or too expensive. So, I tried Aldi’s medium roast ground coffee at a substantially cheaper price.

Please note that I’m far from a coffee snob, but after trying both Aldi and Coles alternatives, I went with the Coles Urban Coffee Culture medium roast and we’ve been happy with it.

I do get that coffee taste is very personal, so I get that it won’t suit everyone. But if you’re already trying Aldi’s medium roast, it might be worth giving the Coles Urban blend a go and forming your own opinion.

      AI COMPARISON:
-Coles Urban Coffee Culture Medium Roast
~ $13–15/kg and has won several Golden Bean Awards.
It’s described as smooth, balanced, with a silky medium body and soft caramel and chocolate notes.
Making it easy to drink black or with milk.
It’s well regarded for daily drinking and offers great value for the price.

-Aldi Medium Roast (e.g., Lazzio or Barissimo) is around $17/kg.
Aldi’s Lazzio beans have won multiple Australian Golden Bean Awards and are roasted by a reputable Melbourne roaster.
The medium roast is smooth, while some Aldi blends can be a bit bland or acidic but generally good for the price.

-Lavazza Qualità is a premium brand, usually priced around $50/kg if bought retail.
Offering more complexity and richness but at a much higher cost.

      TL;DR
Coles Urban medium roast offers excellent value and flavour that competes well with Aldi’s medium roast.
Both are solid budget-friendly alternatives to Lavazza.
Since you’re already trying Aldi, it’s worth giving Coles a shot to see which suits your taste better.

      • Coles Urban got an increase to $18 not too long ago.

        • Oh. Ok. My bad.

Only bought the last one less than a couple of weeks ago.

But no surprises from one of the gredefy duopolies tbh

Do they have the roast date on the packet?

    • +2

All brands at Woolies and Coles seem to have a roast date but mostly > 2 months. It’s almost like they are giving the old batches they couldn’t sell to a cafe to the supermarkets which is a shame.

      • All good for a non coffee snob like me I guess.

  • Need some filter roast varieties

  • +1

Reminder special change at Woolies and Coles on Wednesday - so Tues will be the last day of specials. I grabbed a bag today to try of the dark roast - will grind some tomorrow to see how it tastes

    • how did it go?

  • “Killer Coffee packs 360mg of caffeine per cup – this is a champion with triple the kick of your average brew.”
It’s like red bull coffee, will give you wings

    • Is it false advertising if people don't die from drinking the coffee?

    • +1

Sounds like bs, wouldn't it be like any dark roasted bean?

@jeffr Let us know what you think!

      • +1

I just googled it and that came up under their own page.. I’d never heard of them

        • +1

Yes no doubt marketing jargon just agreeing it is a bit odd.

      • I must admit I was a bit sceptical at first, so I looked into it. It appears Killer Coffee’s extreme caffeine content comes down to their particular choice of high-caffeine arabica beans, blended with some clever marketing spin.

        TLDR:
-It can have more than double (over 100% more) the caffeine content of regular arabica beans per equal dose, thanks to its uniquely high-caffeine arabica beans.
-But to hit their headline claim of 430 mg per 250 ml cup, you need to increase your basket from the usual 15g to 22g of coffee grounds.
-At $19.93/kg price is only “cheap” if you use it sparingly.
-At the recommended 22g dose, your practical cost per kilo jumps to about $29, making it more expensive than it first appears, even though you’re getting a lot more caffeine for your money.

I’m happy to share my calculating here if anyone wants to challenge what I stated here.

        Cheers

Robusta beans have a higher caffiene content than arabica, and based on how killer coffee co markets their beans, i reckon theyre using an arabica/robusta blend.

They conviently refer to their beans as "premium arabica blend" which to most sounds like an arabica SO blended, but its ambigious and could also mean arabica/robusta blend.

They dont refer to their coffee beans as 100% arabica, however their canned coffee drink is labelled 100% arabica.

If their beans were 100% arabica, they would surely jump at the opportunity to say this as they do with their canned coffee drink.

      Buyer beware

      • I got both industrial and darkerside from Woolies and I can confirm both says ingredient 100% arabica. The Darkerside is even darker roastes than the Vietnamese beans I bought from a local Vietnamese coffee shop in Hanoi

  • Medium Roast and Industrial Strength are 100% arabica (front of packet).
Darkerside would have robusta mixed in (for the caffeine boost).

  • Darkerside is pretty average for a stronger roast. My go to is Jeds X coffee beans from Coles.

    • Bought Jeds X once and found it to tasted burnt, didnt smell right as soon as i opened the bag. Put me off ever touching it again.

    • $12 a cup lol.
If people keep paying it then the dicks will keep increasing the price. 7 eleven or making your own is far cheaper, as are pods and instant.

  • Tea is better priced. Not by much, but drink more cuppas per day than I could drinking coffee of any type.

But once you drink coffee with rainwater, the cheap coffee beans are superior to any <$50kg coffee bean on town water.

    • Drinking more tea than the royals there ..
2 to 3 caffeine drinks a day is heaps personally.

  • My local still had the intro price today by error but honored it. Grabbed 4 bags and a bag of Darkerside which was full price.

Wow 5 bags!!! You do realise coffee beans are best used when they're fresh?

      • Freezer

        • Still not as good as fresh.

          • @WatchNerd: Better than old stuff you may pick up at the supermarket, beans freeze very well.

Anyway it's pointless buying too much at once.
